depends....how far did you run today? I've run twice in the past 2 weeks. Stupid shin splints. Managed to get 3 miles in on tuesday and then 7 yesterday.

You will be worthy of a 5k if you think you are. You could be worthy of a 10k, or even a marathon if you put your mind to it.

Just checked a few numbers for my running so far this year, and observed that I've already run more miles this year than in the first SEVEN MONTHS of last year. Still a little on the light side, with a per-month average only a little more than 100 miles per, but not bad. May jump into a 5k race on 4/23.

oh man, today was a clear 64 and sunny. I was able to run the dogs and wear nothing but shorts and shoes (sorry to those I made vomit due to my figure). So nice to be out of doors and feel the heat of the sun. Saturday is a long run but will be on the hamster wheel unfortunately.

Do you mind, I'm trying to eat here!!! lol

It was pretty awesome to be able to run outside in shorts again finally ( I did wear a tshirt tho...I ran thru a park and didn't wanna scare any of the little kids playing there!)

Shut UP, I went running yesterday in just my shorts too! LMAO, that is a funny image. Ok fine, I wore a shirt. I got some Saucony running shoes the other day, they rock! Normally I wear New Balance, but these are much better so far.

Saucony 3D Grid Hurricane! Woo hoo!

Running presidents, like Clinton and Bush, usually wear either Saucony or New Balance because they're the only ones made in the good ol' USofA....

BTW, still raining and miserable here, with no good weather on the horizon. At least we set a record with the most rainy days ever in March....

Had a pretty crappy day, seems like union business is overrunning my life lately. I went to the gym for a run (its really windy and rainy). After 2 miles I started to feel good, the further I ran, the better I felt. I have never really felt a "runners high" but today may have been it. All I know is that I would run another hour at least had I not had to get my daughter at 8pm. I did the easiest 8miles ever. I feel like Steve Austin.

SC,

two things...
1) buy a good pair of supportive and cushioned shoes, dont be cheap. They will save your body loads of stress

2) work into running VERY slowly, it takes a fairly long tme for tendons and ligaments to strengthen and adapt for the stresses running causes. Walk for 5 min briskly, trot slowly until it becomes hard or uncomfortable, it may be a very short time at first, walk until yyour breathing is normal and then trot again. Repeat for 30-40min. Do NOT worry about distance or speed for 2 months, work on keeping moving for a longer duration. After two months you will be ready to focus on running.

Good luck its an awesome thing!

Did my longest run of the year today, 12.4 miles. Took longer than I hoped 1hr 55min 15 sec (9;20 pace), and my legs feel awful now. Something just seems off. Maybe I wasnt hydrated enough or was tired, who knows.

On a lighter note My essentially bald head is sunburned, I wore a visor (please dont laugh, I just wanted more sun block than glasses alone) and there is a distinct line where the visor ended.

It was worth it.

I can't wait to get out in the wonderful weather we're expecting this weekend. I'm forbidden to rollerblade until after the wedding (I broke my hand last time I rollerbladed) and my bike is up north, so I guess I'll have to take up the run/walk routine for the next several days. I'll let you know if I make it up to a mile. :)

I pulled out a 5.8 (or so) run night before last, bigass hill kicked my butt, after that it was pretty good. Felt great and my knees didn't ache the next day, gonna go for 7 or so this weekend! Working up to a half marathon soon.

I wish I were running Boston today!

I did my first 20 miler of the year yesterday, it went very well.
I had my wife drive me out of town and I ran back, but the darn wind changed directions and I ran against the wind the whole way.
Those recovery drinks are worth their weight in gold.

I'm due for new shoes, too. I've been run/walking almost every day this last week. Feeling good, and I can see I'm getting thinner. :)))

I've decided that there will be no races this summer for me. I'd rather do the run/walk thing for pure exercise, than kill myself to end up with a poor time in a 5K race!

worked out at the track tonight, but my legs felt as if they were filled with gel, I felt slow and tired, but I pushed thru anyhow.

Did 8x400 meter repeats and 4x100 meter sprints. Worked up a good sweat and was nice and tired at the end. Not my best workout, but beats sitting home on the couch.

Tomorrow will be an easy 4 mile jog.

Working up to a 5 mile race on the 30th and building to a half marathon in June!

From this point on....
Everything i do will be a PR - at least on the long run days. Did 8 miles today, didn't even try to time it. Prior to today, the longest I'd run was a 10k, now i'm into new territory.

Went pretty well, my legs were flat dead at the end, but I help up pretty good - set about the right pace I think.

Read about ice baths earlier this week, once you get past the initial shock it actually feels pretty good.

Cherry Creek Sneak 2006
Traditionally opens the race season in Denver. One of the largest road races in the country. This moring several thousand people showed up to run the 5k and 5 mile event (with kids events thrown in for good measure).

Sarah (daughter age 11) and Diane (girlfriend) did the 5k event in grand style and I ran the 5 miler. We all had a great time. Official times to be posted later once they're available.

Alan Webb (you know, 2nd ever American high schooler to run a sub-4:00 mile, beating Jim Ryun's old record a few years back) ran his first ever 10,000 on the track last night at Stanford. He sprinted past another prodigy, Dathan Ritzenheim, in the last 50 meters for a 27:34 or something. Yikes!

Hey BowlderMan!! I just emailed you to let you know I'm still alive and well here in MT. We just finsihed the Peaks to Prairie triathlon yesterday and I survived the 9 mile running leg. I think I did about 56:00, but I didn't pull anything.

Yesterday's race actually marked a full year of not taking Ibuprophen (Advil)! I'm thinking of getting a T-shirt made up with "Ibuprophen Free" on it to celebrate!

Hey, I saw that Ritz ran a 13:24 5,000 in Oregon last week, too!

Yes, got the email!

Peaks to Prairie... Believe it or not, I was thinking about that race during my run yesterday; I'm gonna have to do that one of these years. Of course, it'd be my luck that I'd train for it, make travel plans, then there'd be a 20-foot dump of snow 2 days before it, and they'd postpone it or something. Congrats on the injury-free run and freedom from "Vitamin I."

I've been mostly avoiding the advil. I often use a cream (no, not "the clear"!) my chiro recommended called Traumeel - it's a homeopathic thing. Works well!

Too bad we couldn't arrange to go to that meet last night - that 10,000 was apparently pretty exciting. However, I did rub shoulders with a couple of pretty good runners in the afternoon at a party. One was the guy I went to the Yukon with (2nd place in Western States some years back), and the other is the current American record holder in the 50k (my tent/cooking partner from my first winter camping trip).

I ran the Pinckney (Mi) trail marathon yesterday, I did the half marathon. For me, it's a gauge of how my training is going for the marathon at the end of this month.

No snow this year! Or rain. So, the sandy parts were a little harder to do. It's a hilly course, for Michigan.
It was a perfect day for trail running. As if every day weren't, lol.

I ran 23 seconds faster than last year. I feel pretty good today except one heel that is sore as heck.

Sounds like he beginnings of Plantar fasciitis. Ever had it before? The plantar fascia starts to pull away from the calcaneus bone creating pockets of pain that eventually fill full of blood and calcify creating bone spurs. Try and nip it in the bud before the calcification or you're doomed.

Joe had it for a full year before he let me work on him (it only took one session) and started stretching the fascia on a regular basis by rolling his foot on a roller.

Start rolling your foot over a ball (tennis, golf, whatever...or one of those footsie rollers are worth their weight in gold). If you can find a massage therapist ( look at AMTA.org) to work your calf with neuromuscular therapy (soleus, and gastroc esp) and your foot bed, it can reverse it immediately. Hope it gets better!

LeSubtil, I hope your heel gets better soon. That stuff can be a bear. I had PF in both feet, left ft for 10 months, right for about 14months.

Had a horrible day at work today. The last half (which normally would have been great) was a GE lighting seminar. I bugged out early to go for a run before another union mtng. I felt tired and unmotivated. I headed to a local rd that follows a river bottom, parked changed and headed out. I planed to run an hour. Its hilly so it would be good. I bike this area often. Anyway, one hilly hor later I was done, fully refreshed and feeling awesome. Covered 6.8 miles. I think this may be a wkly deal.

I'm still not really sure it's PF - hoping it isn't.
I got in 10 last night after work, and I can say, it still feels better today. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I'm gonna owe the wife bigtime for the foot massages!

Cool how a good run picks up the spirits.

I found a neat trail run very near work, in the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge. There's a small section of it at the forks of the Shiawassee and Tittabawassee rivers. It's a 4 mile loop, quiet, mostly flat, great views and very little to be seen of the hands of man... except for a coal mine tailings pile. This will help me to run 5 days/week if my old body can handle it.

Did some shopping yesterday and bought two of the best things I have had for running. I bought this...
in blue

and this in blue...

The headband has a small gasket like deal that sits on the forehead to prevent water from dripping into my eyes ( big prob in the heat) and it wicks like a dream.

The hydration belt is the bomb for long runs. Carries 4 10ounce bottles plus has two small pcokets big enough for keys, ID and gel packs (about 4). Best part, NO cahffing, bouncing rubbing or discomfort.

I did a test run with it yesterday. I did 18.2 miles along the river bottom. What a great run. I was able to get 10% off for doing a product review for the store.

LeSubtil, glad your heal is feeling better. The trail you found sounds nice, certainly helps to keep things interesting having new turf.

I've seen folks with those belts - good to hear a postive review on them.

I was going out yesterday for 9 miles and about two miles in my knee felt like it was gonna explode so I limped back home.

Wierd, no swelling or anything, just pain. Hopefully a couple of days of rest, ice and ibuprofin will fix it.

Last year when I got my hip injury, I found the Runners World Injury Forum to be helpful. I used to be into running about 15 years ago, but quit. The injury forum is pretty good for just about any injury though from injuries due to running, cycling, hiking, etc. I'm hoping not to have to use the resource much. Being injured sucks.
