So now that spring is . . .well, it is NOT quite in sight . . . but anyhoo . .. I have been running the treadmill some. QUESTION: CD PLAYER. Are there good, sport cd players? sweatproof, skip proof, durable, with a carrying belt or something?? I know I could google it, but, as always, I gotta believe that TT folks represent a great resource for hand on praticle knowledge” 9:55:17 AM 2/26/03 “Lee, mine is pretty basic. It's a Panasonic and the very cheapest I could find. It does have a shock system and you can shake the player as hard as you can and it won't skip. It also has a repeat function that when activated replays the CD once it's complete. Kind of nice if you're out for a long time. A friend has a model with AM-FM. She likes that feature a lot. That same friend made my carrying case. It holds the player and several jewel cases. 24 Hr. Fitness sells carrying cases that look pretty nice as I'm sure most stores that sell players and CD's do. Battery life is good. Mine takes 2 AA's and seems to last forever. Actual hours I'm not sure of. The player itself is five years old and has been through the mill, however the headphones didn't last long and I think this is my third set. Usually I pull the wires from on ear or the other, or the foam falls off. They're cheap though and I just bought a set for $5.00” 10:12:54 AM 2/26/03 By The Way “Swam my first non-stop mile this morning. I won't tell you how long it took me. I will say, if you're drowning you'd better hope there is someone around who is a lot quicker.” 10:18:10 AM 2/26/03 “How was the ol' Yellowstone River this morning, Geezr?? A little chilly?” 10:26:33 AM 2/26/03 “Actually quite pleasant compared to the air temperature. Dodging the ice flows was a pain in the @$$ though.” 10:31:50 AM 2/26/03 “I just hate having to dodge ice flows during my morning workout!” 10:33:29 AM 2/26/03 “they make pretty affordable mp3 players now. i got one a few months ago and i love it. it clips to my arm and skipping is not something you have to worry about.” 11:26:50 AM 2/26/03 “Our treadmill broke today. Nordic track has a part in the mail already, but it supposedly won't be here for 7-9 days. Birch is very, very sad. I had a good grove going too.” 11:28:51 AM 2/26/03 “Nordic trac is sending us a new belt AND a new entire lower half of the machine... So it'll be like new again. The downer is gonna be 5am runs in suburban detroit in single digit temps.” 3:29:59 PM 2/26/03 “Birch, look on the bright side, it could be John R & Brush” 3:34:04 PM 2/26/03 “Geezr, If I lived at John R and Brush I might still run, it would just be for my life thats all... I actually fixed the treadmill this afternoon. I will save the parts they send as spares in case my fix doesnt stay.” 6:48:59 PM 2/26/03 “45 degrees out, and it felt DAMN good to run in shorts! I did my Hills of Death route, fighting icy spots in the pavement and mud puddles the size of Lake Michigan along the way. It was a good run, I'll miss running on hills once I'm down in Florida.” 1:55:23 PM 3/08/03 “I didn't do Hills of Death but the 'Ride of Death' while trying to find a parking spot in Manhatten. It's been a long time since I got my heart rate up to 200 bpm.” 2:07:51 PM 3/08/03 “I had a great run with my son Ian today. We ran 12 miles, which is still my longest run of this running life. Here are my four 12-mile runs: 2/8: 8:48 pace 2/23: 8:27 pace 3/1: 8:19 pace 3/8: 8:08 pace! The last 4 miles today was actually below 8 minutes/mile. I do feel pretty wiped out, just as much as the other times, but I feel like I earned it this time. Guess I've kinda given up on trying to slow down my long runs....although when I move up to 14 miles I am sure I will slow down a bit. Good to hear some of you are getting some miles in!” 7:58:20 PM 3/08/03 “my lovely bride, buffalobabe ran in a 5K competition this morning. she finished in around 27 minutes. she usually does 8 or ten of these a year.” 9:14:40 PM 3/08/03 “Dang Fritz, 12 miles is awesome!! That's twice the farthest that I've ever run.” 7:57:55 AM 3/09/03 “This thread was dead for some time so I thought I'd revive it... Anyone getting in some additional mileage with the spring thaw? Any races or PR's lately? Fritz, holy cow man! Those times are absolutely awesome. I need to get to work in order to keep from being beaten by an old man LOL. Did my longest run of my life this morn. A 14mile trail run. A bit of rain for the first 5-6 miles but drier near the end. Lots of mud but fun. 2hrs 4 min 55 seconds. I think that's just under a 9min pace. Got my trail half-marathon in 5 wks!” 11:52:20 AM 3/22/03 “I've been slacking the past month or so because of the impending move. But this past week I ran 3 times, and the most recent one I felt like I was back in my old form. Ran 5 miles with ease, despite it being 85 degrees out with 90%+ humidity.” 1:07:31 PM 3/22/03 “Thats great artex! I have found that running in that type of humidity is awful, like breathing through a wet sponge. BTW what part of FLA are you in?” 2:40:48 PM 3/22/03 “I'm in Tampa, the thunderstorm capital of the world! Congrats on the super long trail run, I've still yet to really run more than 6 miles. I'd like to do a 10 miler by next month.” 4:21:38 PM 3/22/03 “I've been back on my running regiment for about 2 1/2 weeks now. Ran 6 miles today with ease. Who else is putting in some miles, hmmmm?” 6:02:13 PM 4/01/03 “Sounds good, Artex! I'm just about to head out to pick up Cameron - I'll do my walk-jog while he's in dance class. I'm up to 2 15-minute jogs separated by 2 minutes walking now, and my hip is feeling great. I've even picked up the pace a bit the last couple runs. Another chiro appt. tomorrow, then I'll keep bumping up the minutes. Sadly, I'm going to retire my watch that I've had for the past 15 years or so - it's finally dying....” 6:12:05 PM 4/01/03 “Awesome, Marty, sounds like you're right on track! Feels great, dosen't it? Bummer about the watch, you sure it just dosen't need a new battery?” 6:17:09 PM 4/01/03 “As a few of you know, my walking/jogging routine was interrupted by bypass surgery three weeks ago today. There have been a few setbacks since, but continue to improve. Currently walking 30 minutes in the morning and another 30 minutes in the afternoon. Pace is a blistering 2 mph.” 7:04:21 PM 4/01/03 “Dang, didn't know you had bypass, Geezr. Awesome your still exercising though. Good luck with your continued recovery.” 7:34:11 PM 4/01/03 “Artex, glad to hear you are running regularly. We'll hold off on your expulsion from the club,as long as you keep consistent. :) Martyb, keep at it, mah man! Thirty minutes is good no matter how you slice it. Geezr - wow, I'm with Artex, I didn't know either, but I am real glad to hear you are able to get some exercise! As for me, I had a very good month of March with my running. Then today, my right achilles started feeling like there was a minor pull or something. Scary, since that's one of the big problems I had the last time I tried to get into running shape, in 1996.” 8:29:41 PM 4/01/03 “Fritz -- If your running shoes are more than 6 months old . . .get new ones. It took me 12 months before I could run without having problems with my Achilles.” 8:55:44 AM 4/02/03 “last week I did a fun long run at lunch from work. Crosses a railway trestle over the CT River. The river is way out of its banks in flood stage, really cool to be up above the flooded areas on the trestle. Anyhoo . . I was out for 1 hr 25 minutes. I figure that at 85 minutes it was probably an 8.5 - 9 mile run. I just thumped along enjoying a great spring day.” 8:58:12 AM 4/02/03 “lee...actually my shoes are pretty good, and I only have 227.6 miles on them. :) Glad to hear you are getting out for some nice long runs!” 9:01:12 AM 4/02/03 “Hey Artex, the buttons on the watch are just getting harder and harder to press to get them to work. Also, I've gone through so many bands, the places where the band connects to the watch are getting stripped so they will barely hold the little pins. I ordered a new pair of shoes yesterday (old ones: 298.4 miles on Pair A and 307.6 miles on Pair B), along with a new watch. They didn't have the one I had picked out of the catalog, but offered me the next watch up the line for the same price - does all this qualify as new gear?! BTW, nice run along the shore of the bay with the SF skyline in view. PS - you guys need to check the Injured Reserve thread more often to keep up with all the triple bypass operations, etc.” 11:25:38 AM 4/02/03 “Marty, you might find this interesting, disturbing, dangerous or all of the above, but I used to try to get about 1000 miles out of my shoes- they'd be pretty trashed tho. But lately I've been getting 750-900 miles. My latest pair of Asics GT2080s are at about 650 miles (how can you guys get to tenths?) I'm sort of gimpy at the moment from a sore hamstring but it's gradually improving.” 2:07:42 PM 4/02/03 “Just started back myself a few weeks ago after a long hiatus. Currently only averaging 20 miles a week. The only way I stick with running is to set a big goal to achieve. My goal is to do a 15 mile, 4,000 vertical feet gain run by the end of June. I'll start in my driveway and have the wife pick me up at the top! I've done 20 mile trail runs before but never that much vertical, but pain is my friend.” 5:48:32 PM 4/02/03 “Geezr, you are doing more excercise than most people do (including those who have not had a recent bypass) keep it up. Aero, 1000 miles on your shoes, holy knee pain! I would be in the hurt locker full time if I went beyond 500mi of course I also weigh 190# I am still getting my mileage in but with warm weather I am doing lots more chores sO I am a bit tired come run time. It may be time to run before chores.” 8:04:52 PM 4/02/03 My training log 7:43:45 AM 4/03/03 Try that link again.... 7:48:35 AM 4/03/03 “OK, I've lost my touch...copy and paste this URL: http://www.coolrunning.com/cgi-bin/log/display.cgi?u=Fritz1;s=GoFritz” 7:49:35 AM 4/03/03 “Geeeezzzzz I run maybe 15-20 mile a week. And keep my shoes for no more than 6 months (if I can remember when I bought them). So let's see . . ..that's uhmmmm between 390 and 520 miles. I run on dirt, pavement and some trails. I weigh 155 lbs. For what its worth I have had two orthopaedics tell me to get rid of shoes LONG before they show any exterior breakdown. The cushion compresses long beofre the outer sole starts to buckle and give. On that note, the "run-in" (local running shop) just called and my nike Air Dunham Pluses are in. I will pick them up tonight (I last replaced them in August). I am very sensitive to knee and achilles tendon issues. It bothers me, because shoe are so darned expensive. These sneakers, plus the off the shelf orthodic inserts, will probably run me $130. Other than the actual gym membership, it is the most expensvie part of my exercise regime. At $260 a year, it is close to the cost of my membership!! On the flip side . . .I do NOT want to be arthritic and hobbling at age 60. I will do everything in my power to maintain as high a level of fitness as I reasonably can without wearing down my body. I HOPE keeping on top of good footwear will help me do this.” 8:21:01 AM 4/03/03 “I used to do the thousand-mile routine on shoes, too, aero. But I started getting sorer, so cut back to about 500 per pair. Your ability to get 1,000 out of yours makes it quite clear that your a FREAK OF NATURE!!! j/k - heh heh.... I've been told that you should also replace shoes after 6-12 months anyway, regardless of mileage, because the material deteriorates all by itself (is it radioactive or something?!). So especially with my extremely low mileage over the past year and a half, it's time for the old ones to go. BTW, it'll be my nth pair of the 1996 version of Saucony 3D Grid Hurricanes (about 60-65 bucks). Road Runner Sports always carries them - they seem to be hard to find elsewhere. Regarding tenths of miles on the shoes, if you hunt around on this thread back a month or two, you'll find a link to download my Excel spreadsheet running log, which keeps track of the mileage for two pairs of shoes at a time. Yes, weight is a significant factor in shoe life, too. You're pretty light, eh aero? 140's? At least I've dropped a lot of my injury weight (175 down to 159 this morning), so I'm being a little easier on my joints and shoes....” 10:35:28 AM 4/03/03 Shoe replacement “I think I'm to that point Marty. I'm in the 140's and pretty efficient, but my age is gaining on me! Plus 70 bucks for shoes is cheaper than paying $5,000 to the orthopedic surgeon! I've seen that spreadsheet, too, but I'm still low-tech with my running log. I write in a steno notebook. The nice thing about that is that I print large expletives to describe how I felt that day.” 11:11:40 AM 4/03/03 “Hey, I have a question for you guys. I've noticed in the past week I've experienced some pain/discomfort in the area on the side of my legs between the inner ankle and the calf. It's not on the shin, but that area about 6" above the inner ankle. That's not a shin splint, is it? I always thought splints were directly on the shin? Besides, it dosen't feel like the bone, but that muscle. Would shoe inserts maybe help this? I hope I explained it accurately enough.” 11:27:52 AM 4/03/03 Tibialis-posterior tendonitis “Artex! Keep tabs on that injury. That's your post-tibial tendon and it runs from the inner side of the calf, around the ankle and under the arch. It helps give you a push-off during your running stride. Mine started out inflamed feeling sore to the touch and eventually just quit functioning properly and i had to have it rebuilt (that was the worst-case scenario). Keep it iced and try to massage it across the tendon. Try typing in "posterior tibialis tendonitis" in a search engine and there's a ton of stuff about it!” 11:33:55 AM 4/03/03 “I think maybe amputation is the way to go, Artex - save yourself a whole lotta hassle!” 12:02:31 PM 4/03/03 “Watch it or I'll post the picture of my right foot!” 12:05:24 PM 4/03/03 “Aaaaackk!! Not that!!!!” 12:08:35 PM 4/03/03 “Thanks aero, I have a feeling that may be it. :-)” 12:10:26 PM 4/03/03 “a few other tidbits: -rest it a little, maybe bike for a couple days and cut back your running -ice, ice ice! -Advil, Advil, advil -cross-tendon frictional massage (rub your thumb across the tendon) -shoe inserts that might take some of the stress off your arch.” 12:23:58 PM 4/03/03 “All great suggestions. Dang it, I hate to cut back on running though, especially since I just got my groove back. Oh well, a sacrifice for the greater good. I'll rest it over the weekend, try to run again Monday and do a light one to see how it feels.” 12:33:17 PM 4/03/03 “I ran once last month. Am I still in the club? :-)” 12:36:59 PM 4/03/03 “Running away from Buddha Bear dosen't count!” 1:17:03 PM 4/03/03 Jump to Page << prev
