I actually managed to run 5 miles without stopping last night for the first time in my life, I was hurting but I made it, pretty proud of myself.

long time no run
I have the camelbac flashflo waist pack and I love it. It holds 45 oz. It's great for 6 to 10 mile trail runs in the dry desert. The Alterra and Catalyst look really cool to for shorter runs, they are 28 oz.

I just started running again after almost 2 months off. I had to take the time off to recover from a car accident. My truck was pre airbags and I t-boned a flat bed tow truck that ran a stop sign. I was able to walk away without a scratch, my truck didn't fare as well, may it rest in peace. I did suffer severe whip lash though and my back is finally starting to feel better.

It's been an emotional roller coaster these past few months though. I was at the end of week one of my spring training when the accident happened, so that really pissed me off. I've had really bad cabin fever but I was in pain if I stood too long, walked too much, or sat too much. So now I'm back over 200 lbs., I can't run more than 2 miles, my ab muscles are gone, and my lung capacity is zip. I get myself motivated to work out and I'm happy but when I can't go as far as I want to, I get down on myself. I'm hoping to run a 10k trail race in 7 weeks and I don't know if I'm going to be up to it. My goal was to beat last years time by 8 min. and get down to 45 min. but I'm more out of shape this year than I was last year. Any help with training tips and motivation would be greatly appreciated.

Taking off 8 min on a 6 mile race is HUGE - even if your in great shape. That'd be over a minute per mile - since you had a training setback maybe consider backing off your original goal and setting a new one based on circumstances.

Hang in there though and don't try to recover too fast. Work yourself back to the condition you were in and then work on improving from there.

bison, good for you! I recently heard that if you can run 3 miles that you are among only 5%of americans, running 5 puts in a smaller group of 3%, welcome to that 3 % bison.

Reptiles, sorry about the accident. Take it slow and give your self time.

How was the race bro?

Did the Colorado Rockies Home Run 5k today - did this race last year too. Great fun, super cool event.

Finished in 24:35 - a new all-time best!!!

My 11 year old ran/walked it this year as well - very proud of her!

My next event is the Estes Park Half-Marathon - touted as being the highest elevation paved marathon course in the WORLD. The starting line is at 7400 and change. Should be pretty cool!

Roam, congrats on the new PR! All the training is certainly paying off. The 1/2 sounds fun, that kind of elevation would kill a flatlander like me.

Thanks - the Estes Park half/full is probably not the course to go try to set a PR on for sure - the elevation will make a diff - i wouldn't even think about it if I wasn't fairly accustomed to it.

Awesome PR Roam.

I was scheduled for a 10k this weekend. Woulda been the first race since the half marathon. I've been helping a friend (a previous non-runner) train for it. But my right knee, which has given me occasional problems for a few years, started to act up early last week so I took a week off. I ran again yesterday w/ no pain. But, decided that with my big trip in 10 days, I'm not risking an injury by racing. So, I'll be sticking to 2-3 milers this week and next. Maybe we'll do the 5k instead of the 10k on Sunday.

My running has stunk these last 4 months. I manage about 8 miles per week and I spin about 2. Really awful stuff. I just can't get motivated. That and life is just very full right now. My cardio is still strong but all the weight I gained after I broke my foot is really killing me... probably literally. I remain in a state of shock that an injury (broken foot) almost 2 years ago could have such a huge impact on my running.

I'm right there with you JimmySan. Tendinitis, foot surgery and arthritis has me ten pounds heavier and struggling to get back in the groove. I'm managing three miles at a time very slowly. I think it's just a matter of not giving up. Be stubborn about it. The busyness does not help.

Sorry to hear about the injuries, etc. I wish you all luck.

Anyone in the Detroit area interested in a swim/run? Every tuesday night there's a triathalon/aquathon "training" race. I'd like to see how it all works.
First one is 1/4 mile open water swim & 2 mile run. They get longer as the summer goes on. www.3disciplines.com

I have a handful of books that my dad has given me, all running related and all pretty old (70s, some 80s). Despite their age, I'm sure there's still some useful info in them. I will be getting rid of them at my garage sale next month but before I do, I wanted to offer them to my TT friends, free of charge (except shipping). The titles are listed below. Please email me at taragluski at comcast dot net if you're interested in any of them.

Trail Running!
Who woulda ever thought there were so many awesome trails around the Denver area?

Found a nice one just a few miles from home up on the way to Boulder. Great views of the Flatirons on this nice flat run along a creek/drainage control ditch.

No trees though, so much better at 7 am vs. 11 am!

Lots of people with dogs (all extrememly well behaved) and on bikes - but its not crowded.

Did a 5 miler yesterday and went back this morning EARLY to beat the heat and did 9+ miles.

I'm really looking forward to checking out more of the trails in my area! - beats the heck out of car exaust and traffic!

My friend, Leah, wanted to get into running and about three months ago, asked if I'd run with her. I did. We ran, on average, 3 times a week. Started out with one and two mile run/walks. About a month and a half ago, I moved her up to 2.5 miles (still run/walk, tho mostly run). The, in the last few weeks, I took her to the nature trail near my house to run 2.5 with hills and a couple 3 milers on the rail-trail. Still walking but, now, only once and just for 30 seconds or so.

This morning was her first 5K race, ever. It was my first in prolly a year or so. I stuck with her for the whole race and we had lots of fun. And, to top it off, it was her first time running that distance w/out walking at all. 31:46. She felt pretty proud of herself. I'm proud, too. We're gonna keep it up and see what races are around here in late June or early July. She said she wants to give the 10k a try.

It's nice to have a running partner during the week; my dad can only run on weekends. And, not at all right now since he's been working 7 days a week and will be for another two months.

Did 10K in 48 minutes this afternoon which is not bad for a 40 year old fat guy. That's a record for me on the rebound. Still a shadow of where I was two years ago. If I get 6.2 more miles in by Saturday will have a 32 mile week. That's the best week of running since the Day of the Broken Foot two years ago.

No knee pain either and really good sleeping at night.

If everything goes as planned today and tomorrow, May will be my biggest month this year, with around 110 miles of running (plus some other stuff, too). A good follow-up to my wimpiest month of this year (had a couple of colds, went to the Yukon, etc.) last month.

Did a 12-miler on Sunday - felt kind of dead at the beginning, but just kept chugging along and made it fairly comfortably.

I had a great run Saturday at the Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City, Mi. It was warmer than I would have liked, I had a sore foot, and I had a cold for the week preceding, but I just ran, ran, and ran, and beat my PR by 36 seconds! (3:45)

I missed qualifing for Boston by 12 minutes, but there's always the next one...

Gotta love those training plans.

LeSubtil congrats on the new PR! Amazing how 36 sec can be so exciting.

I did my usual 5 mile route today (running is more fun lately since I am not training for anything these days) and man was it hot and humid. the first 4 were fine but mile 5 I could feel my face really heat up, I know I am on borrowed time when this happens. Gonna try to stick it out all summer this year. Maybe run when its dark....

I've taken to early morning, or more often near sundown to stay out of the sun, its much more pleasant that way.

Yeah, I've known about him for a long time (since he's here in the Bay Area). He's one of the people I call a "freak of nature." Most of us humans just aren't meant to do that kind of thing (run 200+ miles at a time), but once in a while somebody accidentally discovers they can do it - a freak! A good kind of freak, but a freak nonetheless....

I went down to Kensington Metropark (Detroit) yesterday for a swim/run that got cancelled (too many weeds?).

I ran around the lake on a very nice bike trail, paved 8.5 miles, nice and hilly & curvy. I was a little dissapointed though; no one will even look at you as you pass - they stare at their feet. If they do look up and , and if you say "hi", they put their finger on their cellphone speed dial for 911.

18 miles this week and I still have the rest of the week to go and my 10 mile long run. I'll easily make it over 30 this week. I hope I can make it up to 40 miles in a month or so. If I can (safely) make it to 40 I'll be close to where I used to be in terms of mileage.

lol, leSubtil! That's exactly what they do. The boaters generally either aim their sailboats for your kayak or paddle to the other side of the lake to avoid you altogether.

That lake gets awful algae blooms from all the fertilizer run-off. I imagine the water plants can be equally bad. That's where Joe and I do most of our spring paddling but we don't go there much in summer. It gets nasty.

I read about this 200 mile running while he sleeps dude and others like him. OK, I am not criticizing but rather pleading ignorance.

The human body stores enough glycogen to run 30 miles or so more or less. Then you are done. A person at full rest will restore their stored glycogen in like two days (is that right?) So I fail to see how these people can run 200 miles. I know they take in carbos as they run, but it's not the same thing as glycogen drawn from your muscles. I just don't get it.
