I have a great movie exactly about that JimmySan. It deals with athletes and how they override the brain signals to stop their activity (specifically ultra runers). I'll look and see what the title is tomorrow. It's fascinating to say the least, at least to me.

Cranked out 7 this morning. I thought it was 6.2 (10K) but this time I brought a GPS with me and it turned out to be a little longer. Bonus. I have to measure it a few more times because I could swear I measured this route years ago, with a GPS no less, and I chose the route so it was 6.2 miles, had a clearly marked "split" point, and cut across as few major streets as possible (to permit uninterrupted running).

Now that I am getting my weekly mileage back I am starting to feel like I used to before I broke my foot.

It dawned on me this morning... I love running! I have yet to find anything that produces so much return on my training time than running.

Congrats on the running Jimmy. I've been running with my new girlfreind who does marathon distance. I never thought I would like running and went through a lot of pain to get here, but like you nothing feels better anymore. I'm shooting for a half marathon by this fall. Jennifer was in the lottery for NYC but found out yesterday she wasn't drawn :(

Yes, I'll run the long one. 20K, wasn't it?
That was one of my most enjoyable races last year.
A sign would be awesome! Thanks for remembering me!
Too bad you & G won't be running, but you prolly won't have the energy ;-)

Jimmy San: I really like your last thought, there...

I'm gettin' tired of all this running without any racing. I think I'll do the "4th Sunday Run" in a couple weeks. It's your choice of 1, 2, or 3 laps around the lake for a 5k, 10, or 15k. I think I'll do the 5k. You never know what the competition will be like at these monthly races - could require sub-15 to win it, or sometimes a 19:30 will do the trick. Good test to see what kind of shape you're in....

So far I have 16 miles this week but I am 'on the road' in Miami Beach so all my running duds are in my luggage... that was lost. What a pisser. I got up this morning hoping the bag was delivered downstairs but no luck. It still isn't here. I was looking forward to running on the boardwalk and/or the beach this week. Instead I got a "day off" that I had not planned for. Good news is that the airline says my bag should be delivered in 1 hour to the hotel so there is some hope. Oh, yeah, and I did not have business appropriate clothing for today so I worked from the hotel room waiting for my luggage... not what I had planned.

Got back up to five miles yesterday in my new running shoes, and no foot pain today, so that's an improvement. It was brutally hot on my second lap when the sun came out though, I barely made it around.

got my luggage and cranked out 5 miles along the beach this morning, a nice fast run but the Miami heat and humidity finally pulled me down.

I didn't sleep well last night. Miami Heat won some sporting event and it must have been really big news because horns starting going off around midnight ... whooping and hollering. It went on for hours, the horns of cars was everywhere! :)

That must mean they won the NBA champsionship. I didn't watch the news last night so I'm guessing.

I ran for the 2nd time last night in forever. There's a loop connecting to my neighborhood that's about 1.75 miles. It has a few hills. I ran it last Tues and was sore til Friday. I wanted to run Sat but wound up working. I'm trying to get a Tues/Thur/Sat schedule going.

I was running 3-4 times a week before my trip to Ireland. While in Ireland, I ran once. I haven't run since. I'm getting back on the wagon, starting Friday, with a bike/run combo.

I was on the verge of getting laid off, but I found some contract work out-of town.
Now I have to adapt to urban running. There aren't any long rail-trails around, and the small, not busy streets are narrow and without sidewalks. So, I'm running on the sidewalks along the busy main streets.
10 miles sure seems a lot longer than on a straight rural rail trail. It's nice that everything isn't flat though!

38.5 miles this week, just short of my goal of 40. I had a forced day off in Miami because the airlines lost my luggage. It's prolly for the best since I was adding too many miles in one week and my legs are a little sore. The recovery run tomorrow will feel good.

le Subtil - Rochester Hills, right? Ask how to get to the Paint Creek Trail. It's a rail-trail that goes from Rochester to Lake Orion. I believe it's 8 or 9 miles, one way.

le Subtil -

I won't be able to get a sign out for you at the Volkslaufe! We'll be driving back up to 'Muth on the 4th, and I'm gonna miss your race. We had to push the honeymoon back a day due to a flight cancellation, so our return is pushed back too.

Really, I'm so bummed I'm gonna miss you! I was really looking forward to seeing you pass by! When you do get to the library on the course, wave at the house between the two that are up for sale. That's us (temporarily!)

Good luck! Do well!

plantar fasciitis
... I must be doing something right because it's back now... that familiar pain in the morning when I get up. I should have expected this. It's always been in my left foot only, never my right. I managed to get it to go away with stretching using one of those socks that holds your foot back (hard to describe) when I go to bed at night. Thing is it took me like a month before I could get any quality sleep with the damn torture contraption on. Looks like I get to start that process all over again.

I'm telling you guys, just get a massage! It does wonders for plantar fasciitis!! Ask for NMT or trigger point therapy on Gastroc, soleus, peronelas, and a good foot job w/ focus on the plantar fascia. If you can't do that spend a half hour a night rolling your foot on a golf ball. It'll lengthen that fascia in no time w/o torture. (The massage might feel like torture)

I had a rough night last night because of that plantar fasciitis stretching sock contraption, but it worked. Greatly reduced heel pain this morning and I expect none tomorrow. I don't remember if I ever got used to wearing that thing to bed. Sass, I am going to go back and re-read that post of yours, perhaps try the golf ball thing. I read about something like that in the "Runners Repair Manual" (a classic running book).

I messed up.
I've been working and staying out of town with little to do, and there's awesomw trails here, so I was running a lot. 50-60 mile weeks.
I was real sore, but I still ran the Volkslaufe 20K. I was doing fine until about mile 9 then my shin started hurting bad. I finished, with a 1:46, but I was favoring that leg so much I screwed my knee up too. I haven't run since, I can barely walk. Taking the kids to the water park next day was a huge mistake, too.

But, Smiley, I did see the library. I think there were 2 houses for sale across the street.

Ooo, take care of that knee, le subtil!

I brought BowlderSon to the track after work yesterday. (I'm planning to give a couple of all-comer track meets a try in a few weeks (maybe the 800m), so need to get some speed back.) That punk kicked my butt on some of the sprints I was doing! Next time I'm giving him the elbow....

I'm more worried about the shin. Anyone know anything about stress fractures? The web said 6-8 weeks to heal. That would preclude any more marathons this summer.

I had the shin problem at Hoist a few years back. Remember that? It was so painful to walk. I was convinced, based on the pain, that it was a stress fracture. But, x-rays revealed nothing. Shin Splints was the official diagnosis. The doc said they hurt like hell. I walked w/ a cane for a couple weeks.

try some stretches with a big giant rubber band, fix the band on something solid and loop it over your foot and pul the toes up toward the shin to stretch the top muscle that rides down your shin.
Roam Around

My understanding of stress fractures is that the treatment is the same whether it's actually a stress fracture or not: rest. I developed a really painful shin many years ago that didn't feel like shin splints, so I thought it might be a stress fracture. I ended up not running for about 2 or 3 months to heal it. Another possibility is something-or-other compartment syndrome (my med school years are way behind me - either that or I never went to med school; I can't remember). It's what Mary Decker Slaney had early in her career - basically the muscles are trying to expand, but the membrane that surrounds them won't stretch. Result = pain. Solution: surgery.

I had shin splints on my thru hike from running with my pack on. The only thing that fixed it was taking some time off. I did get a lot of relief by snugly wrapping the area with an elastic bandage.

LS- sorry to hear about the pain! HOpe it heals quickly!

We're the house between the two for sale. But, we're only here for another 2 months, hopefully. :)

Honeymoon was great. I'll post pics of that soon, and some nice ones of the wedding when we get them back.

On a running note, G is going to run the 10 mile at the Crim, he claims. I am still just doing my walk/jog thing for exercise. If it goes well, perhaps I'll run a 5K later this fall. We'll see. I am still running a mile pretty strong, but not more than that.

I know I'll get a lot of ^#$@ for this, but because I love all you TTr's I have to say it anyway.

You do know, don't you, that running isn't very good for you long-term? The repetitive pounding takes its' toll, you may not realize it until you're older but runners have far more joint problems than non-runners. Also, running is especially bad for women.

I am a big believer in low-stress exercises, I bike instead of run, I snowshoe or X-country ski instead of downhill, I kayak, canoe, backpack, but absolutely will not run. I know it's addictive & I know you love it, but there are better, healthier ways to get your high. Please don't believe me, check it out for yourselves, do a google - you'll be surprised at what you find!

I guess I'll be swimming more, for a while. It's pretty hard to hurt yourself swimming laps.

Wow. I ran my "Hills of Severe Pain" run yesterday (i.e., not as tough as my "Hills of Death" run) after work. It's about 10k and has some pretty tough hills, but nice neighborhoods and parks to run through. I ran pretty hard because I had some domestic duties to attend to (hosting a little celebratory dinner tonight), so had to hurry home. I checked my old running logs and found that it was the fastest I'd done that loop in almost 5 years! Maybe I'm getting in shape!
