By the end the sky is mostly sun and its 88. The humidity sucks.” 9:15:29 AM 7/16/06 “Pretty toasty here yesterday and today, but still low humidity. I did 30:00 of tempo run yesterday, sandwiched by a couple miles on each side of jogging. I was toast for most of the rest of the day. Today is another track day with BowlderSon - his track meet is this Thursday. We'll do some short stuff again: 300s, 200s, etc.” 8:45:33 AM 7/17/06 “ugh, repeats.... Took the puppy running with me this weekend, first time for that, she's still learning the leash deal, but getting there. Kinda fun running with the dog, she gets excited when we meet people (we run through parks on a series of paths). It was fun - pup was tired when we got home. LOL” 9:29:03 AM 7/17/06 “Kept both my weekend runs to the early morning hours. 7:30. I prolly won't run til later this week, when it's supposed to cool down. Roam - I took my puppy running several times last fall. Then, a few people told me to consult my vet... Some sugges that the constant pounding isn't good for their growing bones. Of course, my puppy didn't have to "run" to keep up with me; it was more of a trot, so my vet said it was ok for her to run.” 1:27:01 PM 7/17/06 “whew, just got back from a smoking hot 4.5 mile trail run. Egads this weather is awful but the oods beat the gym or raod anyday.” 4:33:34 PM 7/17/06 “I went for one run in the last five days. I've been in SE Kansas, celebrating my Gramma's 90th Bday. The freaking temps there were in the high nineties. Tack on humidity and the heat index was up to 105°. I got one 4 miler in at 7:30am one morning. The bank themometer read 93° at the time. It's good to be home , where the temps are about ten degrees cooler and it's much flatter.” 9:19:31 PM 7/17/06 “What a crappy run today. Its been really humid lately and I can only run afternoon/evening (i leave at 535am for work). I have cut my mileage back to 4-5 miles just to avoid the weather. Tonite it was on the brink of raining and it never came. I wish I had gills. And to boot, I almost got hit again. This time the driver roled through a stop sign at about 10pmh while not seeing me in the middle of the friggin crosswalk. She got an earful. This is the 2nd or 3rd time this year.” 6:28:30 PM 7/27/06 “Birch - that's scary. It's interesting running in the busy city, but I feel like a target sometimes. I'd love to run 4-5 in this weather, even dodging cars. Sure would beat laying around watching TV. I was supposed to run a trail marathon tomorrow. Still waiting for the leg to heal, it's been 3 1/2 weeks. I'll tell you what, I'll never run consecutive days ever again, and I'll never violate the 10% increase rule either.” 10:33:17 AM 7/28/06 “LeSubtil, city running is odd indeed. Either super defensive or ultra-assertive, rarely middle ground. I hope you heal quick, its one of my fears getting an injury that stays. I have broken the 10% rule numerous times, not anymore. Best of luck.” 2:57:47 PM 7/28/06 “After a 6-year (!) absence from the oval, I rejoined the all-comer track meet crowd last night. I was spurred on to do this because a couple of my teammates who run primarily road races ran some very mediocre (IMO) times in the 800m and made the national list of top 25 times for our age group!! I didn't expect to make any list on my first try, and don't plan to make one in the one meet left this summer (next week), but I should definitely be in there next year when I advance to the next 5-year age group (45-49). So I planned to run the 800 as my main race, then jump in the 400 just for fun and maybe even to get on my club's list of best times for my age group. I figured I should be able to run about 2:30 for the 8 and who knows what for the 4. I also thought I would do the 200 'cuz they let you use starting blocks! So I left my office at 4, expecting about an hour-plus ride to the meet. Uh-oh, two huge accidents on the freeway, so I opted for surface streets to at least get past where they were. It took me 40 minutes just to get to the next city! I finally pulled into the parking lot 25 minutes before the 800. I really wanted to have about 20-30 minutes to unfold myself from the car before starting my 20-minute warmup routine. Oh well.... Anywho, the time comes to start the 800, and the goofball starter dude decides we're only going to have one heat! There's about 25 of us, including about 10 kids! One of the older kids is an old buddy's 8th grader daughter who I expect to run about 2:30 also. So with that many people, getting off to a clean start, reasonably close to the rail, without getting in a fast person's way is a bit of an art. So the gun goes off and I do a pretty decent job getting into lane 1 in the appropriate place in the pack. Then I hear "fwap fwap fwap scuff scuff ugh," and the gun goes off twice more. Somebody fell down, and, as it turns out, spikes my pal's daughter in the shin, so they call us back for another go. The gun sounds again, and this time, remarkably, I do an even better job positioning. Only trouble is, the adrenaline takes over and I burn a 33-second first 200m - oops! (An evenly paced 2:20 would be 35 seconds; an evenly paced 2:30 would be 37.5.) So I was hurtin' pretty bad at the 400, which I hit in 72 seconds, so I did a 39. Very bad. But my halfway split is in the ballpark, so I don't get discouraged. Then I hear my buddy shouting encouragement to his daughter, "C'mon Rachel! Lookin' good! You can pass that guy!" I knew he was referring to me because she came blazing past me at the beginning of the back stretch. But I perservered, or however you spel it. With 200 to go, I'm kind of dying, but actually not too much. When I hit the final straight, Rachel has about 30 meters on me, but (don't tell her this) I knew I could catch her. The most positive part of my race is that I did not lock up in the last 70 meters, but actually kicked it up a notch and just reached her at the line. We tied, more or less, coming in at 2:31. If I wanted to be all ultra competitive and all, I may have been able to out lean her, but it's all just for fun, right? So my splits were 72/79 - way too slow on the second 400, but if I hadn't burned that first 200, I could have definitely run, like, 73/75 or something. Not bad for my first 800 in 6 years, and, technically, a masters age group PR - woo hoo! After several minutes of coughing up the smog I had inhaled during the race, it was time for the 400. They ran us old farts all in one heat. I think I beat about 2 or 3 guys who were probably older than me, but the guys who were way out in front were clearly running "their" event, not distance runners like me just having fun. Again, I didn't totally die in the end. In fact, I passed a guy with about 80 to go and held off one other guy who was gaining on me with about 60-70 to go. I ran a 65.5 - I'll take it. There was a long gap between the 400 and the 200, and I started to tighten up, so I skipped that race. This morning, my foot and ankle are sore, so I need to take it easy for a day or two. A fun evening, fer sure! PS: My pal, age 50, ran a 5:06 in the mile, while his daughter clocked a 6:01!! last edited: 8/04/06 9:43:36 AM” 9:42:35 AM 8/04/06 “That rocks! Those sound like great times, I'd be thrilled to get times like that. They have a track meet coming up locally for the can-america games. I had been thinking I'd try it, tho I haven't ran track since grade school. I won't be now, I don't expect to run for at least another month. I progressed to walking 2 miles a night on the treadmill this week.” 11:15:35 AM 8/04/06 “Still can't run. It's been almost 6 weeks. I can walk almost normally, and I've been walking 2 miles a night on the treadmill for the last week. I'm fighting w/ myself not to go out and try running until 8 weeks have past. I'm missing all of the good races. This week was the "run thru hell" and in 2 weeks is the Crim. I still go to my friends' races to cheer them on, but gawd I miss it...” 11:37:42 AM 8/11/06 “6-mile road run this Saturday and a break from the heat just in time. This will be my first race other than the adventure races I've been doing. Jennifer and I did a six-hour sprint adventure race near Kansas City a couple weekends ago. It was 101 degrees the day of the race. We finished 9th co-ed and 21st overall. Our time was just a few seconds over 4 hours, our best for that distance but the terrain was much flatter than what we've been accustomed to and there was far less navigation required. Jennifer trying to talk me into a half marathon by November. Keep running....but be careful in the heat everyone!” 11:59:02 AM 8/11/06 “Well I guess I've committed to the half marathon. 8-mile long run last week and will run a 9-mile this week. Never thought I'd enjoy running this much. It was not that long ago I was struggling to run 2 miles.” 10:13:11 AM 8/21/06 “Nice going... good luck with your race.” 10:16:18 AM 8/21/06 4:48:41 PM 8/23/06 “leSubtil, are you running the Crim this weekend? G is running the 10 mile race. I'm not sure if I'll go down there with him or not.” 6:30:28 AM 8/24/06 “Nope, I'm still broken from the Volkslauffe. I haven't been able to run a step since. I still might go to cheer on some friends. Mebee I'll see ya there.” 11:05:02 AM 8/24/06 “9-miles went good! :) 10 tonight then a 10K race next weekend. Finally cooled off last night. I had all kinds of energy but Jennifer cramped up. That's usually me :)” 1:06:37 PM 8/30/06 “10K race tomorrow. Wouldn't you know I came down with a cold yesterday. I feel much better today though. I ran my last 10K at 8:45 miles. The other day I ran five 8-min miles. I'm hoping to run at least 8:15 tomorrow. yeah, I know....that's slow, but it's huge for me ; )” 12:44:56 PM 9/08/06 “not slow in my book! i'm doing a 10k next weekend,. GOOD LUCK!” 12:49:35 PM 9/08/06 “Thanks Roam! I'm signed up for a half marathon Oct 8 too. The longest I've hever run is just under 10 miles.” 1:21:15 PM 9/08/06 “I was training for a half marathon earlier this year, with my eye on a full marathon that was just last month. once I got my long run up to the 11 mile mark though, my knees just ached for two or three days and I decided that i'd stick to 10k and 5k distances. I don't know if i was building up mileage to fast, i didn't think so, but ya never know. I was using a Hal Higdon training plan. All was fine until I did the long day at 10 miles + and then my knees just absolutely ached.” 5:17:42 PM 9/08/06 “That sucks, I struggled through shin splints for months. I like running but don't want to make a career out of it if you know what I mean. I have a feeling a half marathon may be the longest thing I do. The race was good this morning. We both struggled a little but we ran a 7:45 on our first mile and averaged a little over 8:20 overall. Jennifer did great, she got 5th in her age group and is holding second in the 5k-10K half marathon series. She has a solid minute + lead over third place. The guys are another story, they're too fast for me. Leaders in my age were a good 3-4 minutes faster.” 2:00:03 PM 9/09/06 “Good Job IJ! 8:20 is pretty good. I'm always amazed at the times the winners turn in - even two age groups above me. Makes me feel soooo like a slacker. Then I'll be reading some magazine about a former Olympic athlete who lives in Boulder or Littleton and realize that a lot of the people I'm in races with are super serious runners and I don't feel so bad. Always race against yourself - to heck with the rest of those yahoos.” 2:47:21 PM 9/09/06 “John, i would fall over dead if i could run that fast. Good job on the race. Its really wierd, I just moved from Colorado to the beach, and so I've been running on the boardwalk almost every day. I've been doing about 4 miles, but it feels like I'm not even getting my heart rate up or breaking a sweat, since I was running at 6,000 ft before, and sea level now. Runners who live and train at high altitudes have a huge advantage when they do races at other places in the country. But I just tell myself that I'm just in damn good shape! lolol” 12:23:16 AM 9/10/06 “thanks Em, the way I see it, if you were running 4 miles at elevation you ARE in damn good shape! ;) I have a workshop in Chicago this week so I think I'm going to do my long run along the lakefront trail by Navy Pier. You run on the beach? I ran the beach while on vacation and it was awesome first thing in the morning on the hardpacked sand during low tide.” 2:06:04 PM 9/11/06 “Sounds like some good running going on lately. I'm "injured" right now - I got a sore foot/ankle in that track meet I ran in a month ago, and haven't run since. Fortunately, I've been able to bike a fair amount - I think I rode 6 times last week, so at least I'm keeping in some semblance of shape while this thing heals....” 2:16:30 PM 9/11/06 “Hope it heals fast : )” 3:12:07 PM 9/11/06 “Yeah, thank God for bikes....no impact, and its really good cardio too. Hope you get better! Yeah, John, I run on the beach or the boardwalk. Just a few steps from my house :D. I cant take my dog on the beach from 9am to 6pm, so I usually go before work or after 6, but its cool to watch all the surfers while I run.” 3:43:31 PM 9/11/06 First Timed 10k “Ran the Indian Summer Race (10k) sunday morning at Boulder Resevoir in Boulder, CO. The 1993 World Marathon Champion was one of the race stewards, gotta love the scene in Boulder! Finished 60th out of 140 runners and 9 out of 12 in my age group, 43 out of 64 guys and put down an 8:23 pace. I'm pretty happy with the result. Next event will be the Race For the Cure in Denver - HUGE crowd at that race. I want to finish sub 24 mins for the 5k.” 8:44:08 AM 9/18/06 “Nice!” 8:48:08 AM 9/18/06 “thanks. twas fun!” 9:10:02 AM 9/18/06 “Nice run Roam! I got a 10 mile run in on the Lakefront trail in Chicago last Thursday. that was fun!” 12:31:25 PM 9/18/06 “The 1993 World Marathon Champion was one of the race stewards.... Did you kick his butt? I haven't run in 6 weeks because of my sore foot. But it's getting better. Another week or 2 it should be OK to start up again. I've been riding the bike pretty consistently in the meantime, so hopefully haven't lost too much fitness. Nice job on the race, roamster!” 1:11:51 PM 9/18/06 “The 1993 World Marathon Champion was one of the race stewards.... Did you kick his butt? HA! He's an old man now (wink) LOL, he rode a bike and led the pack. I saw him as he pedaled past on the return leg of the out and back course, leading the winner (33 someodd mins for the 10k).” 1:14:49 PM 9/18/06 “I have discovered the coolest thing in my new neighborhood - the perfect 5k loop! A good mix of uphill and flat and some downhill mixed in. A strong uphill finish.... (thats a killer, lol). And its on a mix of sidewalk and pavement mostly in neighborhoods with good light for the winter time too.” 11:14:28 AM 9/20/06 “tomorrow the fastest female runner in the area (ranked nationally) will coach me should be educational” 11:25:03 AM 9/20/06 “good luck! share the tips? :)” 11:29:06 AM 9/20/06 “will do - probably too basic for you peeps though” 11:29:49 AM 9/20/06 “hey, i'm a pretty basic guy here! LOL every little tidbit can help” 11:48:59 AM 9/20/06 “I'm basically retarded ;)” 12:20:19 PM 9/20/06 “cancelled til next week - she has to go to her parents home state - unfortunately her father was just diagnosed w/ incurable brain cancer” 7:24:42 PM 9/20/06 “My teammates done good over the weekend (too bad I'm still injured and haven't joined them in months....): http://www.pacificstriders.org/data/NewsRoad2006.html#10KH” 10:04:33 AM 10/02/06 I'm Drug free! “18 months without Advil! Also no aspirin, Tylenol, etc. etc. My urine test will only show pure Rocky mountain springwater! Hey BowlderMan--those Masters guys are fast! I got to run with Dean Karnazes last week on the Montana Marathon course as he was doing his 50 marathons, 50 states in 50 days tour. He's a cool guy--not too wacko--if you don't consider he likes to go out and run 200 miles at a time. That was number 12 and i found it hard to imagine he was doing one the next day and the next....for 38 more days... last edited: 10/02/06 10:19:50 AM” 10:18:29 AM 10/02/06 “Nice, aero! I was following your regimen for a while - about 6 months I think - but I finally succumbed to taking some advil for my foot/heel because nothing else was working. Still haven't run in almost 2 months, but at least I can bike - I did a 40 miler with 2000 feet of climbing on Saturday. Yeah, Karnazes is a little kooky, but probably not much more than the rest of us - he usually does the 200-mile relay race from Calistoga to Santa Cruz solo. He calls his "team" Team Dean.” 10:34:35 AM 10/02/06 “Aero, you're heeeere! :-)” 11:11:21 AM 10/02/06 “I did it! Finished the Evansville Half Marathon (my first)! Out of 1,456 runners I was 511 50/83 in my age group 368/706 for all males Finishing Time: 1:59:44 Pace: 9:07 5K time: 27:03 10K time: 55:20 15K time: 1:23:27 Chip time: 1:59:14 Jennifer ran with me with the same times. It was a personal best for her.” 9:55:21 AM 10/09/06 “woohoo! Way to go John! Thats gotta feel good....” 10:26:18 AM 10/09/06 “Way to go!!!!!” 10:49:23 AM 10/09/06 Jump to Page << prev
