Our good weather came and went.

Treadmill again...though today was different. I had a small sliver of glass in my foot so every once in a while I would get a nice hot sharp pain.

after the grand canyon thang this year i was feeling really strong... and with no zero none knee pain... so i waited a few days and this afternoon, after I did my regular strength training routine, I ran two (2) miles at 10 minutes/mile... slow and short but no problems... easy running. i have been here before but i am going to go slow and easy an see where it takes me. it felt good to get my heart pumping.

i got my doc to give me a reference to an ortho specialist for a 2nd opinion.

i really miss my Sunday long-run ... :(

Anybody ever been diagnosed with Morton's Neuroma? A running acquaintance has it and is considering surgery, but wants to confer with anyone else who has either had surgery or has overcome it without surgery.

You know what I'm going to say....NO SURGERY, MASSAGE!

I have never had it but I have treated it. It's a common problem for people whose second toe is longer than their great toe. Again, it starts in the calf muscles. They tighten, pull at their attachments, pull at the tarsals and metatarsals and whamo! impinged nerve.
A large, deep callus forms just under the second toe generally and the neuroma is quite painful. There are definately options besides surgery.

Sure thing Bowlderman. It's a weird thing casued by trauma to the calf muscles. Women get it 5:1 to men. Guess why.... High heels.

I've been doing some trail running lately - it's lots of fun - still a mix of walking and slow jogging. I also have been doing a bit of running on the treadmill at the gym. I put the treadmill on a really slight incline (never over 5 percent). Yesterday I was able to go for 2 miles at 5 mph, but I only had a 1 percent incline on the treadmill. When I increased the incline to 5 percent, I had to decrease the speed to 4.5 mph. That's really slow - slower than some people's walking speed. oh well.

Astronaut Sunita Williams is registered for next month's Boston Marathon, even though she'll be stuck on the international space station when the rest of the field lines up for the 111th edition of the race.

focus on teh breatheing - deep, slow breaths. Your not getting enough Oxygen into your system. The trick is to NOT let your breathing rythym follow with your footfall rythym.

being well hydrated always helps, but i'd lean towards bad breathing technique.

But - I'm not an expert and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night either.

I searched for "sideache" on runnersworld.com and found this:

Source: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-261--246-0,00.html

Many beginners suffer sideaches, or stomach cramps, when they run. This can be because of a number of reasons.

DIET: One cause of sideaches is eating too soon, or too much, before you run. It takes three to four hours to digest a large meal. If you have undigested food--or too much fluid--in your stomach, your stomach muscles may cramp. Some people may be allergic to certain foods, which may cause problems. Adjusting your diet may help.

MUSCLE WEAKNESS: When you begin running, you quickly discover the weakest part of your body. That body part begins to hurt. It may be your legs, your arms or your stomach muscles--causing a sideache. Your body is telling you to slow down. Pay attention, gradually strengthen your stomach muscles, and the sideaches eventually should go away.

MEDICAL CONDITION: A sideache could signal appendicitis, a kidney infection, even a heart problem. We're not trying to be alarmist, but if you continually experience sideaches while running, you may want to get a medical evaluation.

Once you experience a sideache, regardless of its cause, how do you alleviate it? The best way to cure a sideache, while running, is to do something different. Here are some common remedies:

BREATHING: Changing breathing pattern is often the best strategy for curing a sideache. Shift from 2/2 to 3/3 or some other pattern. Try belly breathing: using your stomach muscles instead of your lung muscles. (Pregnant women learn belly breathing by lying on the ground and moving a book placed on their bellies up and down.)

CHANGE OF PACE: Slow down. Speed up. Slowing down may work best, since one of the reasons for the sideache may be that you are pushing too hard. The sideache is a message from the body telling you to slow down. Any change in your rhythm may help relieve the problem.

MASSAGE: Act as your own massage therapist. While continuing to run, massage the aching area. Pinching may help. Swing your arms forward, backwards and in circles. If runners around you think you're crazy, that's all right. Tell them you have a sideache. Everybody gets sideaches.

OUTSTANDING!

I have a feeling it is a combination of the eating and breathing. I hit the gym about 1 hour after dinner so the meal is still swiming.

Thanks everyone!

Whoa! You run after only an hour after a meal, WK?! No wonder - I usually eat a light lunch at around 11:30 AM, and am just barely comfortable running at around 4:30 or 5 PM. I'm with Roam - no early morning workouts. Bleah!

Great info bowlderman.

I was leaning towards food and breathing also. You can "learn" to run on a full stomach (though there really is no reason too) but it takes time for your body to adjust. Try eating a 1/2 portion before and the rest afterwords. You will prolly eliminate the cramps and getting fuel as quick as possible after running is amazing for recovery. I think you absorb/utilize calories about 50-60% faster in the first hour after a run.

Good luck.

One additional note: I recall reading an interview with some famous running coach one time, and the interviewer asked him if runners should eat before a race. He responded that, to the best of his knowledge, no runner has ever died of malnutrition during a race.

The easy solution for me here to to start working out in the morning before work.

I will get used to waking up at 4:30 every day. What I will not get used to is all the hot chicks that work out between 7pm and 10pm every night. The ones in the tight body suits that make going to gym in the evening so easy.

I ran my first 10K race today. I was 156/~500 - 53:03. Pretty good for a 46 yr. old grandpa who was never an athlete.

I was interested in seeing all the other old farts with their choppy, clunky gaits. I wonder if I look like that? The trick is to find a knot of cute young women to set the pace for you and enjoy the scenery.

This was part of my Mt. Rainier training. I've been thinking maybe I'll quit running after I climb Mt. Rainier, but if all those old bastards I left eating my dust today can stick with it, maybe I can too.

You guys keep up the hard work. At our age, it's not how fast you run - it's that you CAN run!

The Cherry Creek Sneak was today in Denver. They announced there was 12,000 participants, including the kids events and the 5k as well as the main event - the 5 mile run.

It was HOT - a little over 80 degrees at race time. I'm not used to the heat yet and it hurt me about mile 4.5. But I maintained an 8:28 pace and finished a little over 42 minutes - in the top 10% of the overall field, so I'm pleased with the results.

This race is reputed to be the largest 5 mile event in the country - this was the 25th anniversary of it and at least two or three people there claimed to have run in all 25 events - rather impressive!

Good deal Jimmy, sounds like you have been taking it slow enough to allow for some healing. Its gotta be tougher than hell waiting. My right knee pain is about 25%of what it was for the past 16 months. Only changes I have made is cutting back on distance and stretching, the stretches gets most of the credit as I am running much harder than before.

I ran a 10K at the Tobiaco Marsh yesterday.
I haven't run that far since I was diagnosed.
It took me 1:06, but I ran the whole thing, and had fun and saw a lot of old friends.

My Dr.s tell me not to, but I'm gonna run all
