That doesn't count. That would fall into the "Sprint" category. lol” 2:10:41 PM 4/03/03 “Whew! Never thought I'd be so excited about completing a whole FOUR miles. Had a nice run (well, "jog," technically) after work today. The clouds parted, wind calmed, and I had a nice view of the SF skyline heading out along the bay. The hip is feeling almost completely normal now, the weight is within striking range of my standard running weight - now all that's left is the getting into shape. May not race until Fall, but we'll see....” 10:57:40 PM 4/10/03 “That's great, MartyB! Glad to hear it!” 7:53:10 AM 4/11/03 “Sweet Martyb! My splints (if that's what they were) are seemingly at bay, I think due in large part to new insoles that give more arch support. I did a little 3 mile test run with no problems. Tomorrow, I'll do a 6-miler, that'll be the real test.” 8:40:31 AM 4/11/03 “Congrats Martyb!! Now for 5 miles, I know you can you do it.” 8:41:15 AM 4/11/03 “Are you doing the "Hills of Death" route, Artex?? I guess one of my favorite routes could be called the same thing: it's hilly and goes through a cemetery. (Actually, it has one of the best views of the Bay Area you can find....)” 10:11:11 AM 4/11/03 “Artex can't do the hills of death--he now lives on the great sandbar of the southeast!” 10:14:56 AM 4/11/03 “dhutch, I've been increasing distance in agonizingly small increments, so it will be a little while before I get to 5 miles. But once I'm there, I've decided I should be able to do some mild speed work - maybe one week a session on the track; the next, a light tempo run or something.” 10:23:00 AM 4/11/03 “That's right, Fritz! I forgot! Maybe he can do the "Sands of Time" run or something....” 10:23:41 AM 4/11/03 “Martyb, where do you run? Through Colma?” 10:24:55 AM 4/11/03 “Ha ha! Yeah, my running route is pathetically flat. I've yet to see anything that even remotely resembles a hill here in Tampa. Though running alongside the bay is very nice. :-)” 10:28:30 AM 4/11/03 “Ha! Good one, Savage! No, it's the Mountain View Cemetery here in Oakland. Lots of interesting history there, actually: famous people buried there, etc.” 10:31:46 AM 4/11/03 “Here's my "Hill of Death" profile: ”10:39:40 AM 4/11/03 “Dang, that is worthy of the "Hill of Death" title! Sweet!” 10:42:01 AM 4/11/03 “That profile is cool! Wish I could do that for my routes here...” 10:57:52 AM 4/11/03 “Martyb, Using the following (in no specific frequency unfortunately) I reduced my 5k times by a whole minute. Right now I'm focusing on endurance after the rough winter but will go back to these in a couple of weeks interspersed with my normal runs. Maybe one of these workouts per week? 1. Introduce several intervals of 3-5 minutes at a faster pace in your normal run. 2. Run intervals 440's at race pace on the track. Brutal but effective. Don't do these too often, watch out for signs of shin splints 3. Run stairs, bleachers at my daughter's high school football stadium. Start with 10 sets and work up to 20. (I ran 5 then walked a lap, repeat) I love that burning muscle feeling. Right now my muscles are burning more than usual. Dang these Michigan winters!” 10:57:57 AM 4/11/03 “That was 1 whole minute, per mile.” 11:26:34 AM 4/11/03 good luck Martyb! “good for you Martyb! 4 miles! I just signed up to do the wharf to wharf 6 mile race in Santa Cruz for end of July. Have you ever done that one? It will be my first "real big" race. I did a very small 10k in my town of Stockton about 3 years ago. I'm not a regular runner but am starting this weekend to train. Three months should be enough time huh? It's gonna have to be! =:o Do you have any tips on starting out that aren't in the many articles I've printed out & have to read?” 3:16:29 PM 4/11/03 “Yes, I have done the Barf to Barf, as I've called it for a long time. It is a great "fun" race. That is, if you are interested in your time, forget it, because the crowd is worse than at Bay to Breakers. But they have a lot of music along the course, a fun party at the end, and the scenery is great! Three months should be enough time to prepare for a 6-mile race, assuming your goal is to finish it. You can easily map out how far you have to get in your training runs (about 6 miles!), and simply build up to that starting from zero. If you've done some reading about beginning runners, I probably can't add anything you wouldn't have found already - just take it slow and increase mileage gradually. PS: I've done the Cal 10 (10-miler in Stockton every January) race a couple of times - even had one of my best races ever there a few years back.” 3:43:33 PM 4/11/03 “Martyb - How did you make/generate that chart?” 3:51:10 PM 4/11/03 “With TOPO! - yes, you can use it for purposes other than backpacking maps!!” 3:53:01 PM 4/11/03 “martyb, glad to hear you are getting back yo normal with the running.Healing is so slow sometimes. I did my fastes 6miler of the year yesterday 45:53 about a 7:40 pace I think. Got my crappy 12 on the hamster wheel tonite. 16 days till raceday.” 5:11:05 PM 4/11/03 “How was the crappy 12 last night, birch? Looks like my cold-less streak is over, as I came down with one for the first time in over a year yesterday. With that and the storm hitting this morning, I may skip today's run....” 10:09:34 AM 4/12/03 “Martyb sorry to hear about your cold. This year was my worst one in about 8-9 years. Seems like I was always in some stage of illness... The run was actually great. I really started to feel awesome about 6miles in and was motivated the whole time. I am finally starting to feel very comfortable during my long runs. They are much more "natural" feeling, I dont feel like its me versus the distance rather its more like me and the distance (sounds corny but I cant explain it any better).” 7:11:31 PM 4/12/03 “Hi, My name is Tarp Rat... I have been on this board since it began... I started many a thread and helped many people with choosing the right gear (TNF). And I left the board in 2001 because many of the threads became racist after 9-11 and I felt that I no longer wanted to associate with these people. I recently came back and started to voice my opinions about the current crisis in Iraq. I know many people disagree with me, and that's fine! However, I should be allowed to state my views just as everyone else. I was recently banned from the board, my IP disabled. I was told this was because of my off-topic posting, but this is a false claim because the threads I was posting to were completely off topic and unrelated to backpacking in the first place. I just wanted to say that this is unfair. Have a nice day… and let the games begin! ;-o” 7:16:53 PM 4/13/03 “Hey, this is the Running thread - you can't post things that don't have to do with running!” 10:08:18 AM 4/14/03 “I'm running my first race in a very long time this weekend! It's a little 5k run called the Draft Day Dash. The cool part is that the finish line is across the goal line at one of the endzones in the Buccaneer stadium! :-)” 6:58:49 PM 4/21/03 7:08:06 PM 4/21/03 “Run like the wind Artex!! Got a trail half-marathon on Sunady. I am ready to go except for a slight pain in my ankle (see tt biking thread).” 9:04:51 PM 4/21/03 “No pain, no gain. Good luck with the race Birch!” 10:35:02 PM 4/21/03 “I don't think the getting hit by a car type pain gains you anything, Artex! :) Good luck to you both! And have fun!” 10:50:33 PM 4/21/03 “Cool, I just registered my bro and I for the race. Cool t-shirts for this race! This is going to be fun!” 1:11:21 PM 4/25/03 “just did the 9 mile loop around the CT river. What a great day. 60 degrees, sunny, slight cooling breeze! Awesome” 1:21:13 PM 4/25/03 “So the race has come and gone. My trail half-marathon time was 1hr 55min 2sec. 28th outta 47 in my bracket. 8:47 pace. The course had no huge hills but it was almost all up or down, prolly 2miles of flats total. It helps that I have hiked the section numerous times.Started out chilly but ended up crystal clear and sunny, a better day couldnt have been had. Tried some new pre-race drink (R-4 recovery drink) drank more water than usual and "ate" 3 gel packs instead of two.The new combo seems to work well. Headcold wasnt an issue...” 11:53:14 AM 4/27/03 “Nice jobs birch and lee! My race on Saturday went well. I ran a slower pace so my brother could keep up, it was hard to keep myself in check. Still a lot of fun though! I want to run races pretty regulary (maybe one a month).” 3:54:27 PM 4/27/03 “Well, my rehab is coming along. It rained (again!) on Friday, and, this being warm sunny California, I didn't have my warmer weather running clothes, so I decided to just go to the club and try some treadmill running (don't really like it). So I screwed up my translation between mph and min/mile, and ended up doing 18 min., then 15 min., with 2 min. walking between, with the running at about 7:15 per mile! That's more like my old standard pace before my ankle sprain 1.5 years ago - wow.” 10:16:34 AM 5/04/03 “That's great! Ankle sprains can be debilitating! Been through about a 6 month recovery from a bad one myself. Good going. I agree with you about the treadmill, boring. But it's good in really bad, cold weather. How long ago did you hurt yourslf?” 11:18:58 AM 5/04/03 “1.5 years ago yesterday. It's the secondary problem (hip) that's kept me down, though. More good news, though: exactly 6 months ago I tied my all-time heaviest weight of 175. I'm now down to 157 with only 2 pounds to go until my goal of 155!” 6:08:11 PM 5/04/03 “Martyb, sounds like the recovery is coming along well. Its pretty cool that you were able to run as fast as you did on the mill. At least you know you still have it in ya. Keep it up!!” 7:03:36 PM 5/04/03 “Congrats on the continuing recovery MartyB. It sounds like you're progressing well, keep it up. :-)” 9:17:35 PM 5/04/03 •OUCH- my ass• “I'll post more if I get a chance, but I just ran the race of my life at leagu championships... I ran the mile in 4:45. There may be an article in the papper for my stunts. heheheh” 4:53:20 PM 5/10/03 “oh the thread title... One I crossed the finish I dove on my stomack and then rolled off the track to get out of the way. Once I was walking again my but cheacks hurt so much. I had a real volger analagy but I don't think it will go over well here.” 4:54:51 PM 5/10/03 “Damn, that is one seriously fast time. Congrats dude, that's great! :-)” 7:00:10 PM 5/10/03 “my name is in the papper twice today. Once for placement and again in an article for my schools league championship.” 10:23:26 AM 5/11/03 “BTW, I took 4th place. First place ran a 4:37. The crazy thing w/ my race is that I took the lead from the 450 mark to about 1200 (I lead the 2, 3rd laps). I heard the 400 split at 70 seconds and new we were going too slow. With minimal effort I pulled away from the lead pack and held the lead for 2 and a half laps. At the hight of my strech I put about 50 meters in between me and the rest. At the start of the last lap I started to loose wind. Then I was paced by the first second and third place guys. I on the back stretch I held my possition and thought I would have the previous years 2 mile league champ take me. But when I was on the last turn I checked my sholder and saw no one. I booked anway, and good thing I held nothing back. I typicaly slow down to a jog by the time I crossed the finish line, because I am usualy by my self at the finnish. This time I had no idea what was coming up on me, but I kept sprinting. I crossed the finnish in 4th place running a 4:45PR, and colapsed at the finish. I took 45 - 60 seconds of laying down till they told me to get up. Then proceeded to puke up my breakfast and gatoraid. Good day on the track for Ice Tea.” 10:33:18 AM 5/11/03 “If you ain't pukin', you ain't tryin'. Nice details on the report Ice, I felt as if I were there. Good going, keep it up! I'm having a hard time adjusting to running in this Florida heat and humidity again. It's draining, but a good work out. The consilation is that my new running route takes me past the water, and there are lots of hot chicks living around my new place. ;-)” 12:01:18 PM 5/11/03 “Way to go, Ice - only a few more seconds for you to match my PR - heh heh.... My tip of the day: Start your kick w/500m to go. Everyone else will be planning to start w/3-400m to go. If you start pulling away w/500m to go, they'll all give up and start battling for 2nd place.” 11:25:23 AM 5/12/03 “Of course the ones who start their kick with 600 meters to go are going to kick your a$$. ;-) Congratulations Tea.” 1:17:06 PM 5/12/03 “Yes Geezr, it's been done....” 1:52:33 PM 5/12/03 “NOT BY ME! ;-)” 2:07:48 PM 5/12/03 Jump to Page << prev
