The Dumbing Down of Today's Youth
Kids have no sense of musical history.
Maybe we older types need to teach some important history to the MTV generation.

Who took the 'M' out of MTV?
A question I ask myself. I am inclined to agree with you, SS. However, I remember back to what my music meant to me when I was a teen and how my father reacted to my heroes in music (such great influences like Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix) and he wasn't very accepting at first. He did, I must admit, open his mind and lighten up as time went on. But, the point still is that I knew what I liked and that was all there was to it. I suppose it is the same with these kids now. Unfortunately, the emphasis is not so much on creating great music that has longevity, but on the cosmetic end of it plus the fact that most of this stuff seems like it was created in a board room as opposed to an artist's setting.

Yeah, I've been asking for about 15 years now why there is such a talent and originality drought. Most current musicians should not be considered artist but celebrities. Star status used to be something earned by someone's talent or originality through sacrifice and work. Of course, there are exceptions both now and then. CCM is a great example. I like this statement.

"A lot of these mega-successful kids didn't grow up locked in their rooms playing guitars," she said. "Instead, they were raised in the MTV era, and probably dreamed more about becoming A-list celebrities than master songwriters or instrumentalists."

My teenage sons say most of the stuff on popular radio and MTV bites - so it isn't just generational. It feels phoney and pre-fab.

They actually love the old stuff I give them for presents (things I do tailor to their tastes: Bob Marley, Clash, Peter Tosh, Led Zep, Velvet Underground...).

I like the new things they play much better than the standard mass media stuff: Tool, Bjork, Fiona Apple, Perfect Circle.

One son listens to Eminem a lot. As big a jerk as he seems to be some of the time, it is easy to see why he is popular - he is so much more real and alive than most of the sh.... stuff that gets air time and he is often hilarious. Gotta love his rock 'n' roll attitude, there's definitely somefin to be said for music thats raw, alive and can piss you off even while you groove with it.

I felt the same way about Guns 'n' Roses before they split and:

I feel I must respect your opinions and you are most definitely entitled to enjoy what you like, Hikingirl. I would never put that down. I just feel that that Trailhound and myself were referring to some of the creativity (or lack of) in the music.

MTV stinks, I agree..

MTV2 - now that's a pretty good channel! More music, and more of the underground stuff. It's like the MTV from the days of yore.

i'm addicted to some stuff on MTV, but i also can't stand a lot of it, because of the anti-creative aspect.

I have no problem with MTV. I just don't foresee us setting around a campfire discussing Spears, the backstreet boys, Eminem, or even POD (I like) 20 years from now in a positive light the way some of my buddies often talk Elvis, KISS, Nirvana, The Ramones, Primus, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, or The Who. Also I notice fewer and fewer teens digging out their parent's records and learning cords, beats, and entire songs that turned the music industry upside down.

Music televison is all about pretty faces and what can I do to get attention. The music has no soul. With the exception of "metal", no ugly singers need apply. Country "stars" are just as bad.

I feel nirvana, rage against the machine and others similar where the last real bands with any real feeling

Popular music isn’t about music it’s about the gimmick or the image music is an after thought. When I see the performer I feel like I’m looking at an actor not a musician.

Have you noticed how many of todays songs are remakes of what you grew up listening to.

My favorite album/cassette/cd is still Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon.
Dark Side Of The Moon was on the American TOP-200 in 724 weeks. April 23rd 1988 the album finally left the chart after almost 14 years.

i was looking at a book about the Grateful Dead over the weekend at my friends' house, and i was struck by what a huge phenomenon the whole Dead "thing" is. a noticed a couple of quotes in there about how the band is dark and sinister and things like that, and that's why some people like it so much...and i though, "how bizarre!" i've never liked them because it seemed to me that they're NOT dark...i've always thought it was a bunch of happy crap. i guess a show is a whole 'nother story than just listening to a CD, but...very interesting.

Lyra. The 'dark' side of the Grateful Dead may be their 'cult' status and some of the imagery associated with that. But, you are right, the following they had (and still maintain) is phenomenal. Dead fans are some of the most dedicated that ever existed.

From Music City USA
I grew up in the MTV era. I'm27 now and have been around the music industry all my life. My step-father has made a living all of his life playing the guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. I've been around some of the biggest stars in country music.

When I was younger it was all about what was the "in" thing at the time. Just a phase you go through. But as I have gotten older the music that I like now is more talent than anything.

Billy Joel
Darden Smith
Warren Brothers
Norah Jones
Eric Clapton
James Taylor
Kenny Chesney
Clay Davidson
Mark Wills
John Melloncamp
Dan folgerburg
and I'll even throw Eminem in this bunch.

These are just a few of the talented musicians that I enjoy.

I'll agree with Stovestomper about alot of the artists today aren't as talented. You should see all the BS that goes on here in Nashville when it comes to music. Most of the acts that get signed really can't sing but they have the image thing going on. And then there are many people who can sing but don't have the image. Of course the ones that "look good" will get a record deal because the vast majority of the record labels are into what will sell(image) not talent.

You should all see the freakin talent in this town when it comes to music.

Just my 2 cents.

BB, you would be surprised how many talented people I see playing in the New York subways. There doesn't seem to be an reason why some of them wouldn't make it big, if it were just raw talent that was involved.

How about a little history
It would be interesting to see everyone’s list of bands that really changed the current mainstream sound of music at that time. Feel free to go back a far as you can remember. For example one of the most recent and most radical examples would be Nirvana. One week we were enjoying the limelight of party on 80s metal the next grunge. Also add some of those artists that really never received the credit they deserved from the current media.

There's good new music out there, they just don't play it on commercial sources like MTV or corporate radio.

Yeah, MTV blows. I remember when it first came out. Nothing but videos. Then in the 90s, it morphed into softcore T&A (which ain't sooo bad :), stupid game shows and "reality" programing. They should get back to the basics of just videos.

Music is now "produced" to a point where you don't have to have any real talent, just the basics, but you MUST have "the look". Example:

American Idol last night. Randy did like one of the people because he didn't have an execptional voice, but decent. Paula like him and Simon really liked him because of his look. Randy argued his point and Simon "put in perspective", saying " You and I both know that you don't have to have a great voice to be a Pop Star, but you have to have the look and he has that. The rest can be taught to him. He's going to Hollywood". right from the "industries" mouth. Cold hard fact is that until the music industry becomes much more crippled than it is right now, we will never see the likes of a "Stones, Who, Stewart" for a awhile. MTV and the likes are raping the moment and deal with the leftovers later......

is it coincidental that MTV's first video was "VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR"...yup..seems like video killed it all. All i can say is shell out for XM radio! Leave the commercials behind, and find 3-4 stations that play what YOU want as deep in the woods as you want..with 100+ stations you'll find something

THE OSBOURNS RULE!!!
My favorite show on TV is on MTV. I'm not a big MTV watcher but I am a huge Ozzy Fan. The Osbourns is very funny and entertaining.

As far as todays music, I like a lot of it. Linkin Park, God, Smack, Rob Zombie, Puddle of Mud, POD, The Vines, Blink 182, ect.

I dig the old classic stuff too like (of course) Ozzy, Metallica, Motley Crue, Dokken, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Quiet Roit, Van Halen (DLR days).
