Anyone Seen Contact??

I'm planning to get tickets to the musical Contact, which is showing here in SF for a couple weeks next month. Question: does anybody know if it would be appropriate to bring my 7˝-year-old? From what I've read about the show, there doesn't seem to be any violence at all, but don't know much about the language or subject matter. Is it just all about dancing??

He enjoys musicals - has been to several community theater shows and we went to Lion King a while back - but, for example, we opted not to take him to the local production of Cabaret (a little too steamy). Any thoughts??

I can't be sure Marty, but some of the ads I've seen here in NYC have made mention of a sexual aspect to it. I really don't know to what extent this may be true, so take that for what it's worth.

Yeah, treebeard, that's what I was wondering about. A little kissing or strutting around in a sexual way would probably be fine, just depends on how overt the innuendo is....

That's what I am not sure of, Marty. Maybe you can punch it into Google.com and see if any reiviews give you more info...

I know there is a lot of sensual dancing in the show and a lot of non-sensual stuff, too. My wife saw it when it was here in Utah. I'll ask her but I don't think there is anything objectionable in the show. Nothing that would confuse or grab the attention of a 7 year old.

When the travelling Broadway production of Caberet came through town - lots of people left the theater during a pretty explicit scene. Probably wise not to take him to that one.

Contact????????? I found mine, it was on the bathroom vanity.

Sorry Martyb. I couldn't help myself and you weren't around to stop me.

"I ...I never ...I ...I never ...I never ...I ...etc."

- Jodi Foster during the first few of the notorious 18 minutes in the movie "Contact" ...best lines in the story.

I, I never, I never, I, I, I never, I...

...Oh. You mean the play "Contact" not based on the Sagan book by the same name? ...Huh?

Contact the movie is nothing like Signs. It is more thought provoking than scary. I read Contact the book when I was in high school and thought it was good. I liked Contact the movie the first time I saw it but not as much the second time. I'll get back to you Martyb on Contact the play- my wife and I don't cross paths a lot during the week.

Thanks mediaman!

Anybody else? (the musical, not the movie!)

Ok, here's the scoop. Contact (the play) is inappropriate for children. The first scene has some pretty overt sexuality. Obvious to adults but a seven year old probably wouldn't get it. The second scene has quite a bit of swearing. I guess they drop the F-bomb a few times. The third scene is fine. All the dancing is phenomenal. She says you should see it one way or the other but she says that about all Broadway shows (she's kind of freaky that way).

Thank you, mediaman!! I will take this info to my wife and we'll decide. If he won't get the sex stuff, that might be OK. We can prep him re: the "F" word, so I don't mind that. We'll go, with or without him, so I'll post a "trip report" in a couple weeks. Thanks again.

Trip Report
We went to see the musical Contact yesterday afternoon - it was outstanding! The dancing was superb, and each of the three stories was captivating (especially the plot twist at the end of each one).

We decided to bring Cameron along, and, indeed, the sexual innuendo went right over his head. I guess if you don't know what sex is, any kind of hinting about it is pretty much meaningless. Funny that we probably would not have taken him if he were a few years older.

I think the f-word was spoken about 8 times during the second "story." Personally, I feel less bad about exposing him to that than to the violent promos for TV shows like "Kingpin" that are shown during sports events and other shows that should be OK for family viewing.

Anyway, the show is in SF for another week or so, then they go somewhere else. I highly recommend the show!

Glad to hear you enjoyed it, Marty. I remember when you said you wanted to take Cameron to it. Happy it worked out and the questionable stuff bypassed him.

I thought you were talking about the movie, "Contact" with Jodie Foster.
