9:49:18 PM 1/22/03 “thats an average of 24 and a half miles a day. FOR 10 MONTHS! on not the easiest terrain” 10:05:52 PM 1/22/03 “the cdt is basically bushwacking too!!! did you read any of the log while he was on that trail. he had to follow survey stakes some of the time where the trail is going to be. one day i read he followed backhoe tracks. i wouldn't trust myself on that trail alone, just yet.” 10:10:21 PM 1/22/03 “Perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought it was Brian Robinson who did all three trails in 300 days.” 10:31:23 PM 1/22/03 “Check your link Nowslimmer, "Pieps" dropped out on the CDT. I believe he did a total of 5400 miles along with his hiking partner.” 10:34:59 PM 1/22/03 “Actually, Pieps dropped out after completing the AT, CDT and 850 miles of the PCT. Brian Robinson did all three trails (7371 miles) in 300 days.” 10:40:20 PM 1/22/03 “His name was Brian Robinson and he did 7300 miles in 10 months. he did the AT, Pacific crest, and the Continental Divide trail. I have the article from Backpacker magazine right here.” 10:42:45 PM 1/22/03 “Yes, I goofed. I picked up the name from near the bottom of that page. Sorry.” 10:48:19 PM 1/22/03 “LMAO, I'm all like Dang another dude just did the triple crown in under 1 year!!!” 1:33:31 AM 1/23/03 “God, that would be awesome. I think I would need a partner for that. When I do the AT, I would like to go on and do the Triple Crown... Oh, man.. that is something to think about!! :o” 11:21:46 AM 1/23/03 “Yes, "Flyin Brian" Robinson started New Year's Day and finished, I think, Oct. 31. For some reason I though he had averaged over 30 miles a day. He went ultralight, was unsupported. Very impressive.” 11:25:41 AM 1/23/03 Triple Crown “Smoky Girl - try each trail in and for itself first, then if you still want to, you can try the Triple Crown. Just as there is a big difference between a vacation trip and a thruhike, there is a world of difference between hiking one long trail and attempting three. Doing a marathon effort the way Brian and Pieps and Fiddlehead did means that you don't get to enjoy the trail a lot, much of the hike is in winter conditions, you never get time off, you aren't part of the hiking community, and you are hiking 16 or more hours a day every single day. That is physically and mentally exhausting. I remember how weary Brian was when he was two weeks from finishing. Each hike is worth savoring - why rush it? Once you've experienced them, then try the challenge, if you must, but first, enjoy each trail for itself.” 1:26:42 PM 1/23/03 “Yeah, you're right, but still... The challenge is alluring to me. I like hiking long miles. I have my hikes where I take it slow and notice small things, and I also have my trips where I like to push the limits. I enjoy them both perspectives... I get both perspectives, and I think the "marathon effort" has different joys than taking time and socializing or relaxing. I would have alot to learn before I would attempt the triple crown, but its something to think about...” 1:46:34 PM 1/23/03 “ugh.. i need to edit my posts more thoroughly.. yuck.” 1:47:17 PM 1/23/03 “If you do any long distance hikes, you'll find that they are usually a mix of taking it easy days and really challenging days. You are the one who decides whether you will do a half day or a 25 mile day. It can be fun when the weather is fine and you're feeling good to really push the miles. It can also be fun to sit by a lake in the late afternoon with a book and watch the sunlight on the water for a few hours. Then there are the days when the water is scarce and you're forced to push on, whether you want to or not. Not so much fun, but part of the experience, and part of the challenge. On the AT 20 mile days felt like a real accomplishment. On the PCT they were considered short days. Difference in me, difference in the trail. And some of the hardest days were not the longest. 10 miles in heavy snow with a full pack - now that's a challenge!” 10:22:56 PM 1/23/03 “Ginny you are a wicked tease!!! Hey gal did you ever meet Pigpen or Squeaky G on the AT in '92? They'da been with me around ME when we thank we missed each other. Well they were with me or within a cupla days of me. Lemme see, how 'bout El Chasqui too?? LOL, or the Vertrees brothers, Wasichu and Pied Piper? Ah I ax ya 'cause I know what they're up to these days, thought ya might like to know.” 2:56:10 AM 1/24/03 “I think I met Pigpen and Squeeky G, definitely met El Chasqui and Wasichu, though I can't quite picture them. I'm pretty sure we met them in the 100 mile wilderness or else just before Monson. A lot of folks passed through Monson when we were there too. Never spent any time with them though. Who knows, maybe you and I did meet??? I'm dark haired and middle-aged; Jim is older and had a big white beard.” 10:27:03 AM 1/24/03
