“I am looking for a PC program that will allow me to easily input many waypoints, then transfer them to a Garmin GPS. Specifically, I would like to be able to upload a text file of lat/long coordinates into the program as waypoints. I have found a href="http://vonneumann.cs.uakron.edu/~hennings/gpsutil/"target="_blank">GPSUTIL, which seems perfect...except it only works with Magellan GPS'. Any ideas?” 11:09:52 AM 1/23/03 “I was looking at DeLorme Topo USA. REI sells the nationwide package for $100. Here's a link to REI's page.” 11:12:52 AM 1/23/03 “This is a little indirect, but I use TOPO! for that. If I have a bunch of waypoints, TOPO! can receive them, then upload them to your Garmin. I wouldn't buy TOPO! just for that (I had it before I had my Etrex), but it is a breeze. I think their USA/GPS product is about 40 bucks.” 11:13:36 AM 1/23/03 “GPS? Give up your baby blanket you pu$$y. Get a map and a compass and learn how to use them. People like you shouldn't be allowed in the back-country, because it's people like me who have to rescue you.” 11:19:36 AM 1/23/03 “Try EasyGPS , it's free and allows you to change names, symbols, comments and much more. It also allows you to load single as well as multiple waypoints with out overriding those allready installed, at least on my Magellan. Gee Master Hiker, how long you been with SAR?” 11:49:08 AM 1/23/03 “Thanks for the suggestions guys. mtnsteve, I've used EasyGPS, and I like it, although it will not let me import a text file of waypoints, at least not that I can tell. You have to enter them by hand. Martyb, I've achieved something similar to TOPO! By using Global Mapper and downloading DRG's and DEM's I can make topo maps with elevation and shading. The program does not allow me to enter waypoints, although I can get the coordinates. So, I was looking for an easy way to transfer those coordinates to the GPS. I was close to buying TOPO! until I figured this out.” 1:26:40 PM 1/23/03
