Hiking in Arkansas 1/31-2/2 ?

“Owl, I'm an OHTA member, but haven't got to do a hike with them yet. About how many do you figure will go on this one? I've heard they keep a pretty fast pace. Is this true?”

“I believe we'll do about 12 on Saturday and the remainder on Sunday.

The pace usually averages about 2 MPH, but if you're faster or slower it doesn't matter.”

“2 MPH is just about right for me. I can go faster, but I would like to be able to see some stuff. :) What part of the state are you from Owl?”

I think this section starts about a hour north of Russellville. Which should make it a little better drive for you.

This dayhike into the Upper Buffalo Wilderness is rated DIFFICULT, but the scenery is terrific (see the waterfall photos of Smith Falls and McClure Falls on pages 22-25 in the Arkansas Waterfalls Guidebook). Meet at the old Watsons Grocery in Fayetteville at 8:00am or at the intersection of Cave Mtn. Road and Hwy 16 at 9:00am.”

This hike is in a national forest. That should answer your dog question. (no problem)

Ask Owl for specifics. I know they are meeting at one of the trailheads at 8:00 am Sat. But, can't remember the rest. The info is on my work computer.



As far as a stampede hikinokie. I'd say you are confusing this with some of the ECT(s). These trips are very carefully organized. The groups normally break into small groups of 4 or less hikers. There is usually someone that hikes my speed (old & slow)so I survive. Most groups don't exceed more than 8 hikers total unless Tim Ernst leads. Then his popularity seems to draw lots of folks out.

The 20 mile sections on the OHT are not particularly tough but do require a bit of endurance.
