Something seemed to have actually replaced my windows media player executable with something that downloads an executable called infamous.exe. I did a websearch on that name and didn't find much, except for one girl's weblog where she mentioned having similar problems.”

“It sounds like a CSS hijack. (CSS files control how things are displayed in an HTML document)

The hijack is done by inserting javascript into a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) file, then hijacking Internet Explorer's accessibility options to force it to use that style sheet. When activated, the javascript makes use of an obscure and proprietary Microsoft CSS extension to create pop up windows or reset your homepage to someplace else

Try this

1. Click Tools
2. Click Internet Options
3. Click Accessibility
4. Uncheck "Format documents using my style sheet"
See if this is checked, make sure before you uncheck to look at the path of the *.css file. It was my.css in one case, system.css in another.
5. Click Ok twice
6. Now go to the c:\Windows directory where the file is located and delete that *.css.
7. Reboot”

“I ran windows update on one of our work computers this morning and now it won’t start up properly. It’s running Windows 2000 Professional and now freezes up on the “Starting Windows 2000” splash screen. If I hit F8 when it starts up and try any of the options like Safe Mode or Enable Boot Logging it starts fine, but not Startup Normally. I’m pretty sure the windows updates screwed up the system. Any ideas?”

“You'll need to boot up in safe mode and back out that last update. It'll be in add/remove programs.”

“I will try that in a little bit. I am currently backing up our files before I do anything.”

“That happened recently to my Win2K Pro computer, too. Did the update, and then it would reboot in the middle of booting (never-ending loop). I ended up doing a repair from CD and haven't had the time to go back and reinstall each patch one-by-one until I found the culprit. If you figure out which one, let me know. Thanks.”

“BTW, I could get to the boot menu and select Safe Mode, but it did the same thing. Therefore couldn't back out the last update like Phaedrus recommended. That's why I had to do the repair.”

I think it's still broke after a couple of weeks, but our IT guys are overloaded right now.”

i was able to find out what my card was from my boot screen. i've even got the website with the driver. but when i go to the site and try to choose my driver, the windows get screwed up and it just goes to some dam help menu that is sorta underneath the window in which i choose my driver. can someone please go to this website and see what i mean. maybe it's just p.c. that the website windows are screwed up on.
