I've run ad-aware and spybot, and that takes care of most of the stuff, but not all of it. Something seemed to have actually replaced my windows media player executable with something that downloads an executable called infamous.exe. I did a websearch on that name and didn't find much, except for one girl's weblog where she mentioned having similar problems.” 9:02:12 AM 5/07/04 “It sounds like a CSS hijack. (CSS files control how things are displayed in an HTML document) The hijack is done by inserting javascript into a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) file, then hijacking Internet Explorer's accessibility options to force it to use that style sheet. When activated, the javascript makes use of an obscure and proprietary Microsoft CSS extension to create pop up windows or reset your homepage to someplace else Try this 1. Click Tools 2. Click Internet Options 3. Click Accessibility 4. Uncheck "Format documents using my style sheet" See if this is checked, make sure before you uncheck to look at the path of the *.css file. It was my.css in one case, system.css in another. 5. Click Ok twice 6. Now go to the c:\Windows directory where the file is located and delete that *.css. 7. Reboot” 9:03:42 AM 5/07/04 “Bitpusher I'm pretty sure that infamous.exe is a component of a keylog briss virus.” 9:10:42 AM 5/07/04 “Yah I just found some info about that...kinda scary. I deleted it again last night. Hope that they haven't gotten any of my important stuff, the bastards. I'll check the stylesheet thing too when I get home, even though I think you intended that info to be for simer.” 9:17:47 AM 5/07/04 “Also, my NAV didn't pick up on the briss virus thing, is it something that NAV would find?” 9:18:26 AM 5/07/04 “Yeah actually I did intend that for Simer.” 9:18:45 AM 5/07/04 “It should catch it.” 9:20:16 AM 5/07/04 “I ran my scan after I deleted it, so perhaps that's why it didn't find it, lol...” 9:24:56 AM 5/07/04 “I am going to try that. I can never get my web brouser to remember what I saved. Been bugging the crap out of. I did get nailed by that latest worm. Those people are evil. Thanks for the info.” 9:53:55 AM 5/07/04 Phuckin’ MS!! “I ran windows update on one of our work computers this morning and now it won’t start up properly. It’s running Windows 2000 Professional and now freezes up on the “Starting Windows 2000” splash screen. If I hit F8 when it starts up and try any of the options like Safe Mode or Enable Boot Logging it starts fine, but not Startup Normally. I’m pretty sure the windows updates screwed up the system. Any ideas?” 11:32:38 AM 5/13/04 “You'll need to boot up in safe mode and back out that last update. It'll be in add/remove programs.” 11:35:17 AM 5/13/04 “I will try that in a little bit. I am currently backing up our files before I do anything.” 11:54:49 AM 5/13/04 “That happened recently to my Win2K Pro computer, too. Did the update, and then it would reboot in the middle of booting (never-ending loop). I ended up doing a repair from CD and haven't had the time to go back and reinstall each patch one-by-one until I found the culprit. If you figure out which one, let me know. Thanks.” 12:38:50 PM 5/13/04 “BTW, I could get to the boot menu and select Safe Mode, but it did the same thing. Therefore couldn't back out the last update like Phaedrus recommended. That's why I had to do the repair.” 12:40:10 PM 5/13/04 “Something similar happened to a computer here. They applied an update, and it just started rebooting. I think it's still broke after a couple of weeks, but our IT guys are overloaded right now.” 12:46:40 PM 5/13/04 “It appears that Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 was the culprit.” 3:43:49 PM 5/13/04 An interesting little test “I downloaded PCAudit from PCinternetpatrol (bottom of the page) and failed the test, even though I had been fiddling with spyware/malware software lately. They sent me an email with a screenshot of the program I had opened, listed all the stuff in My Documents, etc.” 2:49:14 PM 5/25/04 “That's no biggie. Ever since you visited my 'home page' I can use that little green light on your monitor as a camera. Right now, you're having a powdered doughnut and coffee with light cream, two sugars.” 2:56:34 PM 5/25/04 “Do you use a fire wall as well?” 2:57:26 PM 5/25/04 “I failed the test too.....” 3:01:36 PM 5/25/04 “That's no biggie. Ever since you visited my 'home page' I can use that little green light on your monitor as a camera. Right now, you're having a powdered doughnut and coffee with light cream, two sugars." Violin 02:56:34 PM 05/25/04 HA!! I know you're lying, it's not coffee, it's a Dr. Pepper!! Msteve, I have a firewall, but I've been thinking about trying a different one.” 3:07:50 PM 5/25/04 “I don't think it's too tricky to have a program YOU download and run voluntarily on YOUR computer send information off somewhere else... I'm not sure that proves anything.” 9:18:11 AM 5/26/04 “Good point! Given a month or so I would have thought of that......mabey” 9:34:17 AM 5/26/04 “That's exactly what I was thinking, cindy lu. I'd trust the security scan from Symantec (Norton) a little more.” 9:38:58 AM 5/26/04 Oh yeah: 9:39:37 AM 5/26/04 “Gibson Research Corp. has some of the best scan and security tools I've seen offered as freeware. Go to "Hot Spots" and click on "ShieldsUP!" or go to GRC's freeware area for the tool you need.” 10:03:20 AM 5/26/04 “I also like Violin's URL for the Security Scan and Virus Detection from Symantec. Symantec's check” 10:14:46 AM 5/26/04 “Yeah I found out about the pcinternetpatrol site on the message boards at grc.com. I wasn't too concerned about the test results because Gibson's tests usually tell me I'm alright, and I need to be told I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me. I like Gibson's programs because they take about 1 second to d/l and they're mostly free.” 12:43:09 PM 5/26/04 “help please ! i reformatted my pc. kept win98se. now my moniter will only give me 16 colors. i'm pretty sure its not the moniter driver. could it be my video card driver or something?” 2:26:58 PM 5/27/04 “I had that problem once, because i f-d up formatting c: I had to download a new driver for my video card.” 2:28:17 PM 5/27/04 “Pull an incredible hulk on it and throw it through the window. ![]() The new one should work better when you get it.” 2:46:28 PM 5/27/04 “i remember a couple years ago i put in a new vid card. i seem to remember i had to go online then and download an updated driver. i can't remember what kind of card it is. how can i find out with out ripping my tower apart again?” 2:46:53 PM 5/27/04 “Does it say in your Hardware profile? Wait, what OS are you running?” 2:47:36 PM 5/27/04 “win98se in my device manager, under display adapters it says "standard PCI graphics adapter [VGA]"” 2:53:13 PM 5/27/04 “hmmm...reboot the machine and watch carefully, some adapters tell you what they are during the boot process.” 2:56:07 PM 5/27/04 “annoyances.org. Go to the Win98 forum. Put up with a lot of self important geeks, get your answer.” 3:03:45 PM 5/27/04 “Hey, why can't he put up with our own self-important geeks (like me)?” 3:06:50 PM 5/27/04 “You don't count. You attempt humor and off topic posting from time to time.” 3:08:56 PM 5/27/04 “Damn, not annoying enough. Must work harder.” 3:11:57 PM 5/27/04 “i thought it was an nvida. i went to the website, downloaded a driver, but it was the wrong one. i'll try the reboot.” 3:13:37 PM 5/27/04 “If it does that, it will be really quick, so be ready.” 3:14:36 PM 5/27/04 “I used to think the site was called annoyances.org because of computer problems, then it dawned on me.” 3:16:07 PM 5/27/04 “E-xactly.” 3:20:47 PM 5/27/04 “Well, damn, sacco rebooted and we haven't heard from him since. Oh well.” 3:34:35 PM 5/27/04 “allright this is REALLY ANNOYING. i was able to find out what my card was from my boot screen. i've even got the website with the driver. but when i go to the site and try to choose my driver, the windows get screwed up and it just goes to some dam help menu that is sorta underneath the window in which i choose my driver. can someone please go to this website and see what i mean. maybe it's just p.c. that the website windows are screwed up on. the site is http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp the driver i need is : graphics driver, GEFORCE2, win98. please see if the website is screwed up for you too. thanks much” 6:46:51 PM 5/27/04 “I just downloaded it....want me to try and send it to ya?” 6:51:52 PM 5/27/04 “for real? that would be spectacular! did the website do the crazy thing with the 3 windows to you?” 7:04:04 PM 5/27/04 “The site worked fine. Send me your email adress...the file is 8.7mb...your ISP may not let you download it because it's an excuitable...but it's worth a try.” 7:08:30 PM 5/27/04 “you've got mail” 7:31:26 PM 5/27/04 Jump to Page << prev
