Aggravating.

My PC went to the tech guy because it kept locking up. He put a new heat sink (sync?) in it, stress tested it and it ran fine for 45 minutes. (I took it home and --while much quieter-- it is still locking up regularly)

anyhoo, beyond that, I'm not sure what all this guy did to my computer. It had to "refind" its peripherals like scanner, printers, etc. I see spybot and ad aware SE programs left on it.

I don't see icons in the tray anymore for my Norton anti virus and firewall, which I subscribe to through Earthlink. I can bring up through "programs," but find I can't enable either one. I presume he shut them down when he was doing whatever, but how do I get them running again? Actually, I can't get auto-protect to be enabled. HOWEVER, I did notice when I signed on this a.m., the live update was running. WTF??

And I can't get into my hotmail accounts. I can get into them just fine on the Mac at work. I don't know if it's cuz he eliminated cookies... or if it has to do with a level of firewall security that I now can't change... or what! I have two accounts... try typing in the address (which normally would be on there, depending on which account I used last)

Aggravating!! Thanks in advance for help!

I would call the computer technician and ask him what he did to your computer. If your computer isn't running properly because of something he did, he should be responsible for making it work the way it should.

Make a list of the tasks that you are no longer able to perform and march that computer right back to the tech guy. Tell him it's still locking up. Ask him to fix it and if/when the bill comes, tell them you've already paid for that service. They should provide something in writing telling you what they've done.

Any help we could give you here would be guessing at the problem which could actually make your problem worse.

Any Mac people out there?
My boss accidentally deleted the office printer off our Imac. We are running OS X. I tried to reinstall the printer but when I click "add printer" in Print Center a message pops up that says, “The application Print Center has unexpectedly quit. The system and other applications have not been affected.” The program then quits. Any ideas?

First tool you need is a 5lb sledge. Take it, go into your boss's office, and break his fingers.

A Mac person (I ain't one) will have to take it from here.

Not a bad idea bit, except our payroll is on the machine.

i'll see if Thinkbubelz can give you some advice... Sounds like you may need to re-boot and perhaps re-install that application?

Did you try turning off the computer for about 45 seconds and re-booting? sometimes that will help...

We actually down graded the OS to an earlier version that is supposed to be more stable.

I'm not that well-versed on the OS...
(Thinkbubelz is the computer "guru")....
but I haven't had any problems with OSX....

No it was an earlier version of 10, Jaguar I think, I don't know Macs very well. I wanted to throw the computer out the window, but my boss wouldn't let me.

I think the newest version is called "Panther" (but I'm like you-- don't know the hardware/software very well.)

I usually defer to Thinkbubelz when I have a software issue... :-)

Ok, there was just a little red eye in one of the little boxes at the bottom of my web browser. When I put my cursor over it, it said privacy report. What the hell does that mean. Is my IT department watching me or something?

Green is normal, yellow means caution, but red means you're close to being purged! You should be aware that you can always be under surveillance.

OK, I double clicked on it. Its a privacy setting and it only showed up on the Day of Atonement thread. It's blocking a cookie from Wicked Weasle. LOL

Someday I'm going to get fired for this crap!

it just means that IE blocked access to a site - usually one of the ad sites - for example my system blocks tribalfusion.com

If it's a little red circle that kinda looks almost like a "Do Not Enter" sign, it means that Internet Explorer blocked something that the webpage you were going to was trying to put on your computer.

Typically, you get this when a site tries to put an unauthorized cookie on your computer.

The last few times I've tried to install a program I get this message...

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘close’ to terminate the application."

Anyone know what the hell's wrong with it?

No idea, Nigal, but a computer tech guy who helped me with a problem used Google. He C & P the message into the Google box, and it came up with websites which dealt with that particular problem...

Hmmm, I get the same message when I try to install Map Tech at home. Maybe somebody has hacked into our computers, Nigal.

If anybody gets the answer before I do, post it here please.

I emailed MapTech support and posed the question to them. I'll let y'all know what turns out.

There are more than a few of those questions floating around the net, but the answers seemed specific to the programs under discussion and were not an all-embracing 16-bit system response.

Try uninstalling them one at a time until it stops. Then, reinstall the ones that didn't seem to cause the problem.

Of course, you could actually be under attack.

Those programs may have disabled the music sharing program because it may actually have spyware capabilities. I think Kazaa does.

Bit I'll try that. Don't think I was under attack. I tried several times and even restarted and it just keeps popping up every 2-3 seconds.

This stuff is starting to diminish the values of using the Internet. It seems to take too much money, time and effort to fight it.

Microsoft appears to have done a lousy job of protecting the users. It would not surprise me if a lot of people have already quit using the Internet, rather than suffer the headaches.
nowslimmer

I don't know which music sharing program you are using for sure. But many of the more popular ones unfortunately are loaded with spyware these days and that is most likely the source of the warnings. I haven't used a music sharing program since Kazaa started loading theirs full of spyware crap, so I am not aware of one that isn't full of nasty stuff.

Programs like Kazaa and Limewire are actually adware, meaning that part of the license in installing the software on your computer requires you to agree to allow them to periodically display ads on your computer.

Of course, if you are using the real-time monitor that many of the programs like Ad-Aware SE ship with, every time you run Kazaa et al, it will trip the adware/spyware/malware sensors that the real-time monitor is set to alert you for. Because of the resulting unpredicatable behavior of the adware software, I've seen it set off a domino effect in which the Anti-Virus monitor now thinks the machine was compromised, and so on, so forth.

Try disabling each of those programs and see what happens. In the end, you might not be able to run Ad-Aware SE and Kazaa (or the likes of it) at the same time.

One key thing to do is try running all your spyware programs while in safe mode. it removes crap from the registery that way.

It's not just Microsoft, though their practices definitely do make them more vulnerable than most others. The idea behind security is to always stay ahead of the people trying to breach it. If you stay at status quo too long, you're bound to be breached sooner or later. This is most likely the reason that, especially at work, you may be required to change your password periodically.

Recently, a very bad security leak was found in the storied Firefox browser (whose battle cry is basically about being everything that Internet Explorer isn't), in which you could take advantage of the skinnable plug-ins to replace the URL in the address bar with a fake one, thus tricking the user into thinking they are on say, their bank's website, when they really are not...

Of course, there's a patch for it over at Mozilla now, but it just goes to show that even programs that pay respectable attention to security practices are still not invincible.

Edonkey is ad-supported but I think they're still using the old fashioned banner ad in the program with no pop-ups, tool bars, etc. The version that runs on Linux has no ads.

OK, problem fixed. I had to reload the music program. When I ran Ad-Aware, I inadvertantly deleted some necessary components of the program.
Indiana John

...and thus reinfected yourself. Ad-Aware disabled the program because it was a problem. You just defeated the purpose of the exercise.
