Star Lake Snowshoe ReportView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 5 of 5 messages posted.
“This was my first solo snowshoe overnighter so I learned all kinds of new and interesting things. I left the trailhead at 9:00 am Saturday heading for Star Lake (9 miles). When I hike I usually go about 2.5 or 3 miles an hour. I found out quickly that 1.5 miles per hour was the best I would get with snowshoes. By lunch time, 1:00 pm, I had the lost the trail once but found it again by going up and down the sides of the ridge. I got to Star Lake around 4:00 p.m. and I was happy to get my pack off and start looking for a campsite. I found a spot under a stand of pines that had almost no snow and was more or less dry. It got dark around 6:00 p.m. so I made dinner under the light of my headlamp, and then read for a bit and went to bed. The temp was supposed to be in the 20's so I took a 0 degree bag and slept all through the night, maybe being tired from the trail helped!! Sunday morning I got up with the sunrise and it was remarkable. The sun came up over Job's Sister (peak) and the snow was sparkling. The lake was frozen over and reflected a hazy image of the trees and mountains. It was beautiful. After breakfast I got back on the trail around 7:00 a.m. I seen a few folks on the way back to the trailhead, and some even stopped to chat. I arrived at the trailhead at about 2:00 p.m. which gave enough time to get home and watch the Bucs beat the Raiders. It was a fun trip, and I know that I cannot go as fast on snowshoes as I can hiking!” 9:43:34 AM 1/27/03 “Sounds like a good trip :).” 9:45:59 AM 1/27/03 Congratulations “9 miles on snowshoes is pretty darn good...good job. Sunrise in the winter is my favorite time....wish I was up more often for it....glad you were.” 9:51:46 AM 1/27/03 “Very nice trip report. Did you take any pictures?” 11:31:04 AM 1/27/03 “Yeah, I took pictures but I am not as compatible with my software as I'd like.” 1:45:50 PM 1/27/03
