Hey, Scoops. How often do they give you your food hot? Cold food seems almost universal in these places (unless it's pre-cooked and microwaved).

Isn't it all precooked and microwaved?
No, seriously. When they started talking about McDonald's laying people off and closing some of their restaraunts, I thought about what life without McD's would be like. It's always conviently located on the next corner. McDonald's is awesome after being in the back country, when you're hungover or both. Good n' greasy.

actually been pretty lucky on the cold v. hot issue. i prefer hot, but i can appreciate the views of those who give me cold food, and i would like to apologize for those whose tender feelings may have been hurt by my comments about cold food, french fries, or straws (who prefer to be called cylindrical beverage sipping utensils)

Damn. Now this is the kinda' thread that a girl like me can get into. I love fast food. Strat, I love marketfresh sandwiches and potato cakes. But why don't you bastards serve sour cream for the potato cakes anymore? 2scoops, I wanted to correct you on the thinking that McD's is always around every corner. I lived for most of my life in a town that was 50 miles away from the nearest McD's.

mmmmm.... bacteria
New Tampa, Florida - 12-year-old Jasmine Roberts is a seventh-grade student at Benito Middle School in New Tampa.

When it came time for her to choose a science project, she wondered about the ice in fast food restaurants.

Jasmine Roberts, 7th-grade student:
"My hypothesis was that the fast food restaurants’ ice would contain more bacteria that the fast food restaurants’ toilet water."

So Roberts set out to test her hypothesis, selecting five fast food restaurants, within a ten-mile radius of the University of South Florida.

Roberts says at each restaurant she flushed the toilet once, the used sterile gloves to gather samples.

Jasmine Roberts:
"Using the sterile beaker I scooped up some water and closed the lid."

Roberts also collected ice from soda fountains inside the five fast food restaurants. She also asked for cups of ice at the same restaurant's drive thru windows.

She tested the samples at a lab at the Moffitt Cancer Center where she volunteers with a USF professor. Roberts says the results did not surprise her.

Jasmine Roberts:
"I found that 70-percent of the time, the ice from the fast food restaurant's contain more bacteria than the fast food restaurant's toilet water."

Roberts' graph shows the toilet water, shown in red, had less bacteria in most cases than the ice inside shown in blue, and the ice from drive-through windows shown in green. Roberts' teacher says he wasn't surprised either.

Mark Danish, Honors Science Teacher:
"It does concern me and I think with any restaurant you have to think twice about what you may get there."

Roberts says she'll think twice before getting ice at fast food restaurants again.

Her project won the science fair at Benito Middle School, and she hopes to win the top prize at the Hillsborough County Regional Science and Engineering Fair, which starts Tuesday at the USF Sun Dome.

Toilets are probably cleaned more often then the spouts where the ice comes from. They should check the soda itself. Tons o bacteria at the spout.

who gets ice for a drink anyway?? why pay for ice when the coke is already cold. You get twice as much coke when you don't get ice.

NASHUA -- When Jairo Moncada pulled up to the drive-through at Wendy's in Burbank, Calif., for his usual cheeseburger, fries, and soda, he knew things looked different. There was an extra lane.

But the 25-year-old could not see the biggest change: The woman taking his lunch order was sitting 3,000 miles away at a computer terminal in Nashua, and fielding calls from Wendy's customers at drive-throughs as far away as Florida and Washington, D.C.

"I had absolutely no idea I was talking to someone in New Hampshire," Moncada said in a phone interview later that day. "Our order was ready at the window. It was really quick."

It took a total of 66 seconds.

The Burbank store is one of several Wendy's restaurants around the country that have been testing the concept, and franchisees plan to expand to at least 200 stores by next spring because the initial tests are so promising. Other fast-food companies, including Burger King, Panda Express, and McDonald's, have also started routing drive-through calls to remote locations to get faster and more accurate orders and let in-store employees concentrate on making food, keeping the store clean, and ringing up sales.
