When I was in highschool a friend and I played chicken on bicycles. Neither one of us moved. We ended up a mass of mangled bikes and road rash.

I probably shouldn't have told that story should I.

It was first thought to be a piece of dust. It got worse and more irritated. Eye drops didn't work. The doctor thought it was a tumor or growth, took a look and discovered the worm had hatched from an egg. Feels much better now!

I volunteer in the ER regularly and it is a tough job. I give EMS personnel a lot of credit...they don't get nearly the credit they deserve.

**Takes a BOW**
Thanks Amy G, you're dern right on that one. Did Y'all know that most paramedics make less than $13 an hour unless they work in a metro area? That's alot of responsibility for very little pay - that's why so many of them go into nursing, it pays better and you don't have to pick up all the vermin and stuff on the street.

As for triage, it's the process of sorting patients by "perceived" criticality of their injuries.

Saturday I had a burn victim that would have made you all wait in the ER had he come in at the same time. He was 39 y/o and burned over 60% of his body. He was a black man, but you couldn't tell it because his burns went thru the subcutaneous layer of his skin. He was airlifted out and later died of his burns.

So, triage is just that, the worse are first..sorry Y'all!!

Oh, and another thing...
If you don't want to wait in the ER, say you are having trouble breathing or that your chest hurts...those two phrases will put you at the top of the list..

In case you ever wanted to try and beat the system...but you didn't hear it here, folks!

Triage first came from war...
and does not always mean the worst are first. The worst who can be saved, given the resources at hand, are first. The hopeless are made comfortable.

Want the waits to be reduced in the ER? Too many people use it as their primary care doc. Medicaid recipients are high utilizers of the ER. Some states have tried to enact policies retricting access to ER services unless it is deemed life-threatening. The argument against this by CMS(federal regulatory body for Medicaid) is what the prudent "layperson" would consider life-threatening. The states that tried to enact restricted access have been ordered to rescind the new rule and now it's back to status quo. Health care companies and the states are getting killed by rising ER costs associated with abuse and it continues to worsen.

In the big scope of things the ER issue is small potatoes, but when many managed care organizations operate on about 5 percent margins every cost reduction matters, especially due to necessary capital expenditures to stay on the cutting edge and competitive in the health care market.
