“It's really great if whatever you choose has zippers at the ankle. Makes all the difference in the world if you don't have to take your boots on and off to get the pant legs on or off.”

“I bought some (and returned) them they were too heavy for what I wanted. They were like heavy denim. Is that what you mean? I'll look for where I got them.

“Good luck nigal, most I have and have seen are really lightweight. You can get polyester BDUs but that doesnt help with the zipleg thing.”

“I have REI and North Face convertables (I prefer the North Face) that I love, but I have recently started switching to Gramicci pants. The two pair of Gramicci pants I have aren't fancy: Three pockets, draw string... that's it. No fly. They are nylon and very light. Also, they fit very well and never bind, a very good cut, esp in the crotch. I could see using them in a wide range of activities, not just hiking. Still, I miss all the pockets and it's a P.I.T.A. when you have to take a leak.

I have one pair of Mountain Hardware Winter Wander pants that I got on sale. I like them but can't say I love them (I mean after all they are just pants). I got them on sale, so I don't know what I paid. I never pay full price. I tend to stick to layers as a strategy and have a bag of various weights of base layers, mostly Marmot. Then I take a waterproof shell in case I have to get messy (make a snow cave, etc).”
