Is the trip set in stone?
What about going along the AT for 2-3 days to some crossroad and shuttling back to neels gap?

Hey, fill out your profile. :)

yea i was meant to do blood on my trip to georgia earlier this month, but i wussed out after three nights in sub-freezing weather. the plan was to go from amicalola to neels gap, which i did, but i bypassed blood mt and walkd extra miles on the fourth day so i could get back to civilization a day early. the first two nites werent bad, but the third nite was 12 above, and my bag was a 20 degree bag. so for me, this is just about going back and making up what i missed, cuz ive heard that the view from blood is just awesome

considering i have a 9 hour drive home, i want day 3 to be short, blood mt summit to neels gap would be perfect. so lets figure out a trip that starts around 15 miles south of blood, with blood mt the second nite and neels gap the finish. gooch gap to blood is about 11, cooper gap to blood is about 17. i would be agreeable with either starting point.

When you go, be sure and climb up on top of the huge rock next to the shelter. Great views from there. It's an easy climb, nothing technical at all.

There was a guy hiking the AT last year by the name of 2scoops. He got it because he woke up one morning and found that the mice (or squirrels, I'm not sure) had put 2 scoops of acorns in his boots.

there is no view from blood mountain. all that you will see is mud and mosquitoes. it smells like sewage and there is trash, everywhere. go somewhere in the smokies, instead.

Plus, there has been a high increase in manatee activity since the official end of the drought. Three hikers have been killed, and several more injured. NEVER get between a mama manatee and her babies.

There is a large shelter on top of Blood mtn but I didnt' stay in it..because at the bottom of the mtn on the side going south to north there is an outfitter/store and great campsites litter the area after that. You can take a shower , have a meal at the store... I will have to check my map...but how many miles are you talking about?
clem35yeah

3/12/03

It's 11 miles from Gooch Gap to Slaughter Gap, with only one really major climb in that stretch, Big Cedar Mountain right after Woody Gap. There's a shelter in that stretch, Woods Hole, which is about a half-mile off the trail from Bird Gap. I wouldn't stay in the shelter on Blood. There are a few camping spots on Blood, but no water and very little, if any, firewood. But I've heard it's great to camp on Blood on a clear night.

Looking at the AT description in Ga. I don't see a Granny Top Mt and that is where 2scoops said they might camp the 1st night. Does it go by another name?

Bit, didn't you do this section last Oct when I had to bail out
Ewker

Yep, well, from Woody Gap to Neels Gap and beyond. It's a nice section.

If you're looking at the GAAT's trail description, they leave a lot out. There is a Granny Top Mtn. about a mile after Big Cedar.
That would make the first day about a 5.5-mile day, and the second about a 9-mile day. Henry Gap is almost dead between Gooch Gap and Neels Gap. Dunno about the water situation there though.
bitpusher

2nd night would be Slaughters gap which is approx 5-6 miles from Granny Top Mt and then the last day hike to Neels Gap approx 3 miles. 2scoops broke it down to a 2 nighter so he could get out early Mon and drive home.
This is looking more of a go right now but it is still a long time away

No fires within 300' of the AT from, like, Springer to NC.

Not drought related. Instead, it's due to the over-abuse of the vegation. There's nothing dead or down left to burn.
