What would you buy?
I'm thinking of getting new sleeping bag.....Yes, I am the Dodder and have finally escaped "RETAIL HELL". Question is NOT on new bags!!! So don't post anything about bags...SoleMan. My question is on the compression of sleeping bags. It will be a down bag and I want to get it compressed as small as I can. I have an old Slumberjack bag that has straps on it and really has worked well. But because it's age, it has seen better days. Mrs. Dooder is sick of sewing it up. I understand that Big Agnes makes something like this. Any ideas or experience in this? Ok, if you want to give me sleeping bag help,, go ahead. Looking at a 15 degree down bag that is under $300.

Doesn't Granite Gear make compression stuff sacks. That's prolly perfect for what you want. I'd go to a gear store with your new bag, and stuff it in different sized GG bags to get the best fit.

Good luck tinman, hope to see ya on the trail again soon, and bring the chili!

OK, TinMan. I just ordered a bag made by an outfit called The Backside. I'll let ya know what I think when it arrives. You can check out their website at thebackside.net. They give all the specs on their bags. Looks like a great deal for the dough. I got mine (the Black Goose, natch) through their outlet at gear4life.com for $153.00.
So, how's tricks???

Hey, binks. The ones at overstock seem to be the older models though. Only 700 fill-power down (only???) and larger compression size...

Stupid Question
Does it matter if you store your bag at home rolled up in its stuff sack, or hanging like at a retail store?

That's a real narrow bag but it does look like a good deal for anyone wanting a convertible bag. My Blue Kazoo works fine for temps in the 'teens but it's pretty narrow as well. I feel like I have my shoulders hunched up when I zip the bag up all the way.

If you want your bag to last, handlebar, hang it or at least lay it loose somewhere. Leaving it compressed will ruin it in short order.
Yo, dwedtarts!!!

Kelty bags are great if you don't want to feel trapped in your sleeping bag. they are wider than almost all bag manufactures.

Hey Dodder I use a 700 fill 20 degree bag from REI and it came with a laundry type bag for storage and a compression bag that's about 6 inches in diameter and the end cap pulls it down to about 10 inches long. It weighs about a pound and a half and I've used it down to 6 degrees below 0. I use it like a blanket in my hammock on warmer nights.

I knew this would turn in to a sleeping bag discussion and not comprssion post. But thanks PakRat for teeling me that. FYI for everyone I have made my decsion. I went down to REI and got into some bags and have read reviews etc and have decided on a Big Agnes Zirkel. For all you big guys out there. It has a 70 inch girth and ways only 2 lbs 5 oz. is 775 down. I think this will be excellent for the hammock also. I'm ordering it tonight for $230 from Piragis Northwoods co. Or you can get it from Outbackgear.com for $263.00 and you get a $100 free fleece jacket. Most bags make me feel like a sardine...which still come in TIN cans which will melt in the fire. What you think?
