outside of the fact that it claims its a 5 deg bag it looks like a rip off to me.
1)i doubt icicle creek has accurate temp ratings.
2)so its really a 20 deg bag
3)but 20 deg bag that weighs at least a half-3/4 lb more than a proper 20 down bag should.
4)If i want a 20 deg down bag why would i choose a crud name over a quality name brand bag like north face blue kazoo that comes on sale all the time for 99$ ??

Basically its a crap name, prolly crap quality and more expensive compared to name brand products. It also is heavy for a 20 deg down bag!

Bottom line:this bag is a real rip off.
Stay with name brands and buy them on sale.Junk on sale is still junk except you pay less for bending over.

I don't know, REI has a reputation to uphold, and they usually do a pretty good job, but ya never know. Size is pretty big, I bought a sub kilo, 20 degree bag from them last year, down, for about 2 bills as I recall, maybe not that much. It compresses to the size of a small cantelope. At 12 x 18, this is a humungus package in the pack.

I had asked about this bag a couple of months ago and did not get very good feedback about it. You might want to go with something else.

Down should do it for compression. I'm going to have to check out the insualtion value of 550 goose down...

550 is the lowest quality but some peeps say it works fine.

Alrighty there, Brother Phaedrus. Check out the bags at thebackside.net. I just ordered one from them called (of course) the Black Goose. Specs are;

Black Goose -5 F
750 Premium Goose Down!
Thermal efficient overlapping shingle construction
YKK Zipper: the best self locking zipper around!
Oversized Draft Tubes add total protection against cold air coming in or heat leaking out
Both the shell and liner are made w/super-light, wind and water resistant, diamond ripstop nylon!
Length: 94 in.
Shoulder: 35 in.
Foot: 24 in.
Fill Wt. 2lbs
Bag Wt. 3.2lbs
Pack Size: 8x13 in.

Being a rather broad-shouldered individual, the 70 inch shoulder girth is very attractive. This bag will replace my old 0 degree camp seven bag which has served me well, but being quallofill it is bulky and heavy. Oh yeah, I got it from their outlet for $153.00. I'm going to try it out in a couple of weeks, I'll let ya know what I think.

let me do the math.

marmot never summer, 0 deg., approx. 3.5 lbs. with 660 fill

icicle creek 5 deg., under 3 lb, with 550 fill

i'm with davex. this bag is either has inaccurate temp. rating, or inaccurate weight advertising or both. go with the tried and true.

Baume, nobody started out as tried and true. Sometimes the new guys on the block provide us with some outstanding deals.

I wasn't defending Icicle Creek. I agree with you on that one...

Actually, that bag looks like a heavy clone of the Blue Kazoo (a 20 degreee bag, BTW).

And a 60' shoulder girth??? If you're planning on using that bag, I hope you're built like a stick!!!

It would be nice if REI includes the amount of down fill in the bag. That would give you a little more to go on. Sometimes with the cheaper down products the down fill is not enough to fill the tubes and minimize cold spots. Cabela's down jackets are a good example. They're cheap with 650 down, but there isn't enough of it in the jacket. 550 down insulates just as well you just need to use more of it. For many years it was the standard of good down.

everybody needs some of this
Listen up, all you ultra gear heads. You thought you had everything? Well, Nunatak can now bring to market, on a limited basis, the ultimate fill for any of our down products. But it comes at a price. Read on...

Think Classic Eider Down. The revered, the rare. A unique wild down. Grown under Arctic tundra conditions. Down so fine, so incredibly light, that loft and volume and fill weight have a new standard, an eider down benchmark... The quality is top notch, perhaps 950+ or better. No joke.

Our supplier gently hand collects this amazing product in the wild, directly from the nest, without disturbing the bird, in portions so small that it takes weeks to get enough to fill a bag. Certified genuine Eider Down from extreme Northern Canada, minimally processed, very unique.

Why would you want Eider? Warmth, loft, lightest possible weight, durability, ethics, and yes, prestige, are just a few of the reasons that comes to mind. Make up more yourself. Because certain things in life can't be logically justified.

Should you get it? Well, can you afford it? Because of its rare nature and painstaking collection process, the price of this stuff is extraordinary. We add a $125.00 surcharge per ounce of down for the exclusive privilege to own this one of a kind sleeping bag or jacket. Per ounce, remember?. That means, for example, the humble Ghost in size medium will go from $307.00 to $1187.00. Perfectly reasonable.
