Favorite light backpack food!
Killer new find. My local Raley's (Nor Cal grocery store) had a soup in a bag, vegetarian and all natural from Fantastic Foods. Serves 4 to 6 (8 1 cup servings) costs about $3.49. They had veg barley, split pea, potato, and veggie "chicken" noodle. I think it is a new thing. If you cannot find it, check their website at www.fantasticfoods.com

This stuff is the tastiest dehydrated soup I have ever found!!!

My Mom just made a curried cream of cauliflower soup that is really tasty and should dehydrate very nicely. There's no dairy in it, just pureed veggies. Yum! I was going to dehydrate some of what she gave me, but I ate it all for breakfast. Next time!

lol arty, i was thinkin the same thing.

i just got my dehydrator back form a buddy i loaned it to...something about harvest time...anyways, i wanna get into dehydrating for backpacking. i want to get one of those seal-a-meal vacuume sealers to put it into. the bags are boilable and it would also be grreat for clothing, to make it compact...

According to the Psychomonkey, Boquist1 has been banned on the other board for promoting his products as he's the CEO of Home Grown Natural Foods (the company that owns Fantastic foods).

When the CEO tastes his food, it is "the tastiest".

Check out page 30 of February 2003 Consumer Reports. Consumer Reports had trained tasters sample 31 soups side by side, and guess which one finished, dead last: Fantastic Minestrone Hearty: "thin, chalky broth; dehydrated vegetables; cheesy off-flavor".

For the dry soups listed by Consumer Reports as Very Good:

"Taste Adventure Minestrone. A bean lover's delight. Hearty, with brown spices (like cinnamon and nutmeg) and slight heat. Less salty than most. New version will be in a resealable pouch"

"Wyler's Soup Starter Homestyle Chicken Flavor Mix. Mild, chicken-flavored broth; chicken-fat fullness but no chicken pieces. Decent-tasting dehydrated vegetables".

Boquist1, back to the kitchens to work.

Now, I'd just like to say a word about Texas... I mean... good old Betty Crocker (or similar) dehydrated Hash Browns. Great stuff! Add some salt, pepper, a healthy shot of squeeze margarine and scatter some for-real bacon bits over them and you're all set. The only downside is having to lug a frypan into the backcountry.

(and I'm not a shill for Betty Crocker, LOL)

Bear Creek makes darn good soup mix too. Most of them require no extra ingredients but some ask for some tomato paste. The only thing I don't like about them and other similar grocery store meals is that you have to cook them for so long. I've really gotten into the simple, boil water and pour it into bag type meals....enertia trail foods or homemade. I know enertia stuff costs a bit more, ($3.25 per meal), but it's not that much really. Most of us would jump at a dinner that costs only $3.25 when we're at home. They have pretty good calorie counts too.

was curious.. if u picked up one of those new 'completes' -- where they have taken the idea of using "meat in a foil pouch" to the next level.. a complete meal??

I am curious to strip the cardboard, and drag one along.. figure i could get one at salvage for a buck and a half?

gots to be better than them MRE's, but after trying a few of them lately.. (thanks supertroll).. they are not bad either.. so hMMm.. favorite lightweight backpacking food?.. (other than BBinkley's cheesey potatoes??).. hMMm.. have to still be ramen.. (LOL)..

but I don't eat ramen all that much when I think of that, even.

Knorr cup-of-soups are the best that I've tasted. Also, you can do a lot with rammen and a few dried ingredients. Fruit cake is good, too.

I love to take a pk of hillshire precooked sausage a fresh oninon a tab of butter and some squash ...cook it all in one pot starting with the butter and onions then the sausage ...add the squash after the sausage has brown..it's wonderful.... all of this will keep up to two days on the trail.
