Thinking of doing an overnight trip from big sandy trailhead to skull or shadow lake or even into the middle fork valley. i would like to find info and pictures about this area west of the cirque of the towers. Thanks

Nice Place...Wish I Could Go With Ya
Beings that it seems like quite a distance from Big Sandy trailhead to these lakes...Skull Lake, or Shadow Lake, are you sure you're going to just do "an overnighter"?

If i can add correctly that should be about 10-11 miles each way that should be a nice hike with gear and food for 1 night only

ed,
Go to www.snow-nymph.com for pics of our 12 day trip from Big Sandy to Green River. Click on "Montanapalooza/Wind River Range" on the upper left side of the page. Our first day to Big Sandy Lake was a pretty easy 6 miles, then we dayhiked to Clear Lake after setting up camp. Awesome trip!

Snow nymph that looks like a pretty serious hike. i would like to have the time some year to undertake something like that. i plan on going on the west side of the cirque though. north from the big sandy trailhead not towards jackass pass.

I just met an Ed Miller who backpacks last night.

You wouldn't happen to be in Jax, Florida would you Ed?

That would be way too odd.

Oh well, welcome to the board and nope, never read it but have heard it's worth a read.

The Winds are on my to-do list also.

I'll be in the Winds this summer some time - probably mid Aug(tenitively scheduled). It's only a 4+ hour drive for me. I'll have 5 of our scouts working on the backpacking mb and thats where we will do our at least one of our hikes. I bought the Falcon guide for the Winds but havent read a lot of it yet. The scouts working on the badge plan the hikes - so we'll see.

ed,
we used the book by Finis Mitchell, Wind River Mountains by Joe Kelsey, and Hiking Wyoming's Wind River Range (Falcon guide) and 2 Earthwalk maps for our trip. The one that was most useful was the Kelsey guide. Hope this helps.

i have the Joe Kelsey book and the Earthwalk maps. In August of 1999 i did an 8 day loop starting at the elkhart park trail head. This time time constraints and desire to visit other places in wyoming only leave time for a overnight trip. How is the drive from pinedale to the big sandy? i am really wondering about the drive time. I have heard the road is decent to big sandy so my truck should have no problem. Also are they still having bear problems at the trailhead. in 99 they where supposed to be pretty thick in that are. Thanks

Go in from the other side, out of Fort Washakie. Less people and definitely less to no bears, meaning griz.

Due to the plan for the trip and the other locations that we will be visiting going in from Pinedale makes the most sense. the wind river mountains are an amazing place and i cannot wait to go back

Bug infested, cold, crowded, rocky trails, no fun at all. Bad food, no water, ugly trees, scenery is lousy. Why would anyone go to the winds.

Well on my first trip there i didn't see anyone for 4 days, always near a stream or lake, and the scenery was spectacular.

We didn't see any bears during the 12 days we were out. Only 2 piles of scat with berries. Saw herds of elk on the indian reservation, that was kewl!
