Ever try salmon? - DON'T!
So I'm shopping @ the supermarket & fresh salmon fillets are 1/2 off, hmmm. I get this great idea to get a few extras, bake 'em at home as usual & dehydrate. I eat a lot of noodle dishes for dinner (Lipton, etc.) & like to carry a small can of chicken, salmon, etc., to add for flavor & protein. Anyway, I bake my salmon, then have a HELLUVA time separating the pieces into manageable, consistently sized pieces for my dehydrator. Finally get through that, then start dehydrating. And dehydrating. And dehydrating. I'm at the end of 14 hours, and they're still not quite done.

On top of that, the dehydrator is downstairs & the odor has permeated the entire house & everything in it, upstairs and down. My wife is PI$$ED about the "stink", as she puts it.

Anyway, I've dehydrated a lot of stuff, but can honestly say this is it for fish.

I tried this a few years ago. The smell in the house was so strong, I lost all interest in salmon. It dried, but I could not bring myself to eat any of it.

Oh man! That's a riot, Wanderer! I can barely stand to cook fish in the house (set the George Foreman out on the stoop), let alone dehyrate it for a day.

I dehydrated snapper once (Couldn't find a nice cut of Salmon) and man it wuz terr-ehw-bull! One solution to relieve the stink might be trying to soak the fish in milk first and then patt dry before dehydrating. But I think I'll stick to beef and venison!

Salmon comes in foil pouches? Is it the good stuff, or is it bones and skin and meat like in the cans? That would be great to take salmon in a pouch on a trip!

I don't know which is funnier - trying to imagine wanderer's wife's face or Troll420 with a salmon and a bic lighter.

yo...
I've seen the stuff in 3.5oz packages...and if you can't find the smaller size, then just get the bigger size and repackage it into ziplocks...simple...

I just made a huge batch of pork fried rice...and dehydrated 2 huge servings of it and put it into ziplock...add 1 cup of boiling water, wait 5 minutes...viola...hot and steamy pork fried rice on the trail...goooooooood stuff.

Pork Fried Rice does sound great! What's your recipe? Do you have rehydrate the pork separately?

recipe????
I don't neeeeed no steeeenkin recipe. I just create! and it is marvelous...

rehydrating...no, I just add 1 cup of boiling water and then stir it up, and seal it in its ziplock bag, then slide it into my foil pouch and wait 5-10 minutes, usually I go filter water or play with Khatru, and then come back and eat! its great, cheap and you can put anything you want into it...I make a special rice with spices and herbs, then grate carrots, chop onions, cabbage, mushrooms, garlic, chilis, ham or pork, bacon, I like alot of egg, so I fry 4 eggs, adn then chop them up, then start making the fried stuff...fry the rice, then do the stirfry with the vegis and then toss everything together, putting soy sauce, ginger, sherry, hoisin sauce and sesemae oil all toghther and go to town...I always make a hige supply of this and then eat it for a couple of meals and try to dehydrate a bunch for backpacking.

simple...I have to try some other ideas I have too. I wanna make a batch of killer chili and dehydrate that and stew and some other things. Its all good and home made. and inexpensive...cause I use freezer ziplock bags and eat right out of the bag.

Yessuh. Making gross quantities of the good stuff and dehyrating it is the way to go. No doubt.

Word to the wise: rehydrating whole beans can take a little while.
