Several Ohio folks on this board. I've packed at Zaleski a few times. Great place! Hoping to head down to Hocking Hills this spring. I hear Shawnee is nice, as well. Lots of great people from Ohio can give you more info that me. But, just know that Ohio does have some great hiking. And, it's conveniently located near KY, PA, and WV!

Oh my, are you leaving the Catskills area for Ohio? Horrors! Just make sure to stay away from Buddha Bear.

Actually, I see you're a maybe on the FYAO trip. You'll get all kinds of first hand information if you make the trip. Buddha Bear and Tarabull will be there as well as former Buckeye Buddur.

Ain't a buckeye like a 'brown eye?' I don't know, just a city slicker guess.

-ok, first off, yes i have seen a buckeye and i do know what they are :) i actually have one in my car as we speak (i'm a collector of odd things from odd places, i actually found this one here in NY)
-second, yes i am actually moving from the catskills to ohio 8)
-third, i guess the sarcasm in my statement about the famous ohio mountains didn't come thru in my e-mail, believe me if i had something that strong, i wouldn't be working my regular job and lastly (i think), i'll be moving near toledo...
and yep, i'm a possible for the FYAO trip, depends on what's going on here at work...crossing my fingers...

Turtle13!

You are formally invited to join the Michigan Mountaineers.

Just some history for you...

Back in the early 1800s, Toledo was a part of a strip of land claimed by both Michigan and Ohio. It was rightfully a part of Michigan. All land deeds were registered in the Monroe County courthouse (MI) and the official border clearly included Toledo in the state of Michigan.

Anyway, militias were raised on both sides of the border and shots were fired. Aim was bad, however, and no one was killed.

Ohio was a state already at the time and used bullying tactics to illegally take Toledo. Michigan got the Upper Peninsula from Wisconsin Territory (Ha! Take that you Cheeseheads) in return.

Everyone in Michigan was very disappointed until they realized the value of pasties, smoked fish and Trenary Toast. It somewhat compensated for the loss of a Tony Packo's chili dog.

Anyway, you are likely to do much more hiking with us in Michigan once you move. There is much, much good dayhiking in the area. Backpacking is more difficult although opportunities exist.

We'll get you up to speed once the furniture is arranged properly.

Taking Toledo back, one hiker at a time!

pennsy, i'm going to really try to make the FYAO trip, have to see what's happening around here, i'm on the road the whole week before so i may have to do some catching up but i'd really like to get out plus want to put some faces with names here...wow, lurker thanks, all the things they never taught me in ohio catholic school 8)
and countryroads, i'm a buckeye fan born and raised, if someone strung me up in the middle of ann arbor, they'd find my body wearing red and gray...
really, glad to know there are some options, i was afraid i'd be stuck wth nothing but metroparks adn zoos as my only communion with things other than concrete 8)

Hey Turtle!
I'm from Akron, and we have this "brand new" national park here. It's called the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreational Area. Nice for day hikes, and maybe an overnighter. If my back surgery goes well, maybe I will see you on the trails real soon. Kirk.

Turtle13, Birch and I are in SE MI too. You'll be about forty minutes away from us all, except RL.

Just to clarify, the "mountaineers" part of our trail club name is pure sarcasm. We try to get out often, either in MI, OH or other local states. We started a tradition of paddling during the hot months last summer, so make sure you bring your boat! We all look forward to meeting you, and hope you have a smooth move.

sounds good taz good luck with the surgery...i don't know tara, i spent some time partying up at u of m, you guys are pretty vicious with buckeye fans :)
sass, i don't have a boat right now, sold mine to move up here from PA and have just been borrowing since, that's my next toy though, i'm actually thinking about a C-1 for the first time but i may just go total flatwater instead...

I am not a vicious Wolverine. Honest! The competition and rivalry is a blast... but the truth is... if OSU is NOT playing U of M, I'm rooting for OSU. I own an OSU sweatshirt that I used to wear to class, occasionally.

In fact, I recently spent a weekend wearing a baseball cap that said Woody on the front. I'm almost an honorary Buckeye! lol
