Enough of dial-up service
Finally had enough of the crappy Internet service from the phone company here in the northwoods, and got hooked up today to cable. No more tied-up phone line, no more slow loads! And now more waiting for access or getting cut off (fingers crossed that the cable company isn't lying). And all for the same price.

So now I bet I use the computer at home more for TT (that'll thrill my wife, ha ha).

Cable rocks da Casbah. Now that you have the speed of a puma, check out playing multiplayer video games online, if you're into that kind of thing. Just about every video game you buy these days has a multiplayer mode. It's full-on digital crack.

I don't know about getting into "digital crack," but the screen image is vastly sharper and that is helping my tired old eyes. That was something I hadn't expected, but greatly appreciate.

AAaarghh! You RULE must_hike! I am getting ReAlLy TiReD of this 32K connection, I could read "War and Peace" between page changes!

How much are you paying for cable? I swore not to get cable until prices broke $30/month.

I'm not gonna pay alot for this muffler!

I got it mainly for work, so I could spend more time at home even if I’m working and less time at the office. The cost is about $30.00 a month, but the cost of the dialup service and a second phone line came to about the same price so cost was not an issue.

captn bobo you are still doing dialup? and if that's not bad enough, you are doing 32k? You are a poor soul. Go run to the cable company and get it over and done with. I can not imagine still connecting at 32k. ahhhhh!!!

I know, doesn't it suck! My modem is a 56K, but for some reason my cheapa$$ modem never reaches that speed. Still can't justify spending $50/month for cable, especially when I'm supersonic on my computer at work. Keep talkin' Gemini, perhaps you can convince me...
Capn Bobo

how much do you pay for your dialup? maybe $20? (if you don't have Juno). so for an addtional $29 you save time, that means more time you can spend with your new wife. More time to play with your gear. Hey, or more TT, because it won't take but a second for one page to load. Can you imagine how many important threads you may already have missed because your connection is too slow?

Imagine pages that will be zooming by you, imagine pictures that take just a sec to load. Imagine music you can download in minutes. (save big time money on CDs). If you want to push the whole a little further, (and I did not say this) you can even save money $ and download your software from certain sites. I DON'T

If you have cable TV I think they will give you a discount for the internet connection too. Boy I could not imagine my life without cable.

56K modems never reach 56K no matter what the cost of the unit.

I believe there is a limit..federally enforced perhaps, that for some reason keeps transmission rates at around 45K.

Anyone in the know about this. I'm in the middle of Orange County, CA, and I can not get a high-speed Internet or cable modem.

Awww, Gemini - you're killin' me!! It's sounds soo right, but prices have been oh soo wrong at >$49.99/month, I've just been waiting for prices to drop. Even if I can get a perk, like three months free, that might do it because the cost has historically been too steep! But you put that real pertylike and I just got my bonus...

ehw, the wheels are turnin'

I'm about as cheap as they come but the $40 per month I pay for cable internet is worth it.

Cool, Musthike! New toys 'R' fun
Gem, I just had to hook back up my 56k modem tonight and I was telling Maple how un-used to this I am. The dial up thing and all...
My DSL has been down since Tuesday. AOL says it was a Verizon problem. Get this, Verizon came to the house today and said it's AOL's thing. So, with no end in sight here, I hooked up the 56k.

i pay 10 bux for unlimited dial up...O yeah, its 50 bux+tax for cable/dsl...I download music no problem with my 56k dial up connection albeit 3x times slower than hi speed but whats the rush.I mean theres only so much 80s metal out there!!!
The only thing that i justify getting hi speed would be for downloading dvd/movie stuff.Even at that i would burn as much crap in the first few months and then cancel it.

I looked into prices today for Comcast Internet access and it costs $58.00/month (ouch!) - and I thought the Pirates were in Pittsburgh! I guess I'll stick with Netzero at $10/month until cable prices drop.

treebeard. I had a bunch of problems with DSL, but never had a single problem (knock on wood...knock, knock) with cable.

My condolences, my hear is with you. I hope you will have a brighter future. ;)

davexx: I download one song in about 3 minutes ( could be lying right now, don't know the exact speed, but it seams really fast).
I think if you ever have been on a cable/dsl connection you really know what I mean.

I've been on cable for a while, last year we moved to SC so I had to stay in a hotel with 56k connection. It took my email alone over 1 hour to download (about 200 emails per day) so you can imagine that I can't live without cable. But then...I send/receive larger graphic files all the time, so without fast speed connections I would work double hours.

If you are using it for any sore of business purpose like Gem is, then you would be wise to get it and put the technology to work. I would think it would more than pay for itself many times over

ummm dont forget the cost of a second phone line....

for me it went:
cable 49.95
vs
dialup 19.95
line2 24.00

I looked at the DSL , they said they would hook it up over my original phone lines. I said "you mean the same phone lines that I cant get better then 10k on because of all the stactic.
they said we cant garantee the speed of the connection.

"CLICK"
they said hello? anybody there..

DirectPC is also around but I have no idea what they are like.

Speed Kills
Once you get addicted to higher access speeds, you can never go back.

Gee Gemini, 200 emails a day? You need an inbox filter heh heh.
Maybe you have an Advice column and you're not telling?

Checked into DSL here. Monthly rate was $49.95 but needed to sign a one year contract. If you broke the contract (like if had move) it cost $200!

Got a good reminder of why I hate my Cable TV system.
Friggin' CableOne SUCKS!!!!
My internet has been out for two days and last night HBO died and the rest of the channels had a barely watchable picture.
They were supposed to call me yesterday about my problems but did not.
I'm going on the warpath with the jerks today.

Tell them you expect to be credited for every day the service doesn't work properly. It worked for me when my cable went out one Friday afternoon. I was told that it couldn’t be fixed until Monday. I told them I wanted my account to be credited for Saturday and Sunday. My cable was fixed Saturday morning.
