I am wanting to buy one or a pair of hiking poles. What is a good one that will last of a while for a good price?

LEKI Poles.
I have some of the Leki Makula Ultralight Ti's also. Now my first day, I used them (yesterday) I fell and actually bent the pole. I emailed customer support at night and this morning I had a response back asking for my address to send a replacement! Now THAT is a great company.

As for the pole bending. I am 250lbs and I put MASSIVE amount of pressure on that pole. It bend SLIGHTLY but enough to make the pole not slip back easily. Great poles IMHO, and even better customer service!

Go with the LEKI!

swaine, I use REI's cheapy, komperdell model poles. They don't have anti-shock or foam grips but they work, and have held up excellant in the past 4 years. They only cost $49.95 too. Have the standard 100% satisfaction gaurentee from REI.

Anti-shock is nice, but noisy usually, and it's not something you'll miss if you've never used it. I would like foam or cork grips on my next pair, but not enough to retire mine early.

Another Leki fan...
The one thing I would look for is replaceable tips...being able to change the tips helps if you want to use your poles for skiing, or switch baskets...the poles with non-replaceable tips tend to get the ferrules really chewed up, making it a pain to use your baskets after a season of hiking through the rocks...plus, sometimes the carbide tip breaks off, which I have seen happen on other brands.

I have these Black Diamond Approach poles, only last years model. It was $40 for the pair. No anti-shock, but the flintlocks are great, and they came with the rubber tips. Very quite poles.
