On a lark, I did a Google search for http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Barefoot+Hikers&btnG=Google+Search" target="_blank">Barefoot Hikers and was shocked with what came up!

Apparently this is a very widespread practice with websites, books and chapters all across the US and the world! I guess they’ve been operating under the radar because I’ve never heard of such a thing or seen it mentioned on TT, the premier site for serious backpacking information.

I really don’t know what to make of these aging hippies and social misfits. It seems to me that they must be resigned to the idea that they’ll eventually damage their feet through hiking and have decided to help fate along a bit by throwing caution to the wind.

Am I wrong? Could these simply be people too poor to afford proper footwear?

It says they're barefoot hikers, but not where they hike barefoot. Could be tripping around the dunes or in a grassy city park.

Yeah, I'd like to see somebody hike barefoot in the Adirondacks with all the rocks and roots there!

Oh wait, nevermind. We've seen guys lugging a heavy hybrid bicycle through Avalanche Pass and chicks in sundresses in the middle of the woods there... I guess some tool hiking barefoot wouldn't be out of the question.

Reasons to be careful. 1...2...3...
Stubbed toes, soil-based diseases, sore feet, glass, sharp stones, cold, wet...

I'd rather hike barefoot in the Daks than over Bake Oven Knob. The rocks in Pa are sharp! Ouch!

Cool Ewker! Get them to post here!

I've hiked with sandals before, up in the Beartooths and did OK. My hiking partner forgot his boots so had to go in sandals, so I felt compelled to do the same. We did 22 miles in Tevas up over an 11,000 foot pass on rocky trails without incident.

I ran into one of these nuts in Ireland on Croagh Patrick a couple of years ago. For those that are familiar, Croagh Patrick is a around a 2,300 vertical feet hike. Very rocky and the scree slopes near the summit are the typcial "two steps forward, slide on step back" and step enough in places to require using hands for balance. Every year there is a pilgrimage to the top to honor Saint Patrick and many hikers go barefoot. Nuts!
