The remarks in the "pick up lines" were pretty innocuous, really. But still, there is a time and a place. Trying to lighten the mood by offering silly double entendre or just plain crude "conversation starters" was trashy, in my opinion.

Am I having a bad day? Maybe so. I am finding more and more personalized messages designed to denigrate some other person. I came in from cleaning the bicycling.com boards of a list of demeaning messages aimed at one particular forum member. Granted, that one person has been pretty much a pain in the butt for quite some while and may not deserve much respect from those he has attacked; I don't know the full history. But whatever did happen, today I found many messages pointing to a foolish, though real, news event in cycling: the idea posed was that the fool in the news article was certainly the forum member! A little ribbing soon expanded to messages mocking his mother and father. Really uncalled for.

At the same time, I was impressed that their biggest thread about the shuttle disaster simply asked for a moment of silence, and it was "replied to" by a string of messages that said ...nothing. Pretty classy. Our threads, on the other hand, quickly developed into a political bashing to pin blame.

I am seeing a degradation of the tone of the messages. More flames, less light. Maybe I'm in a slump, waiting for the better messages, like Spring crocus, to poke through and get us back to nattering about backpacking problems.

Meanwhile, I'm very glad that you cleverly worked around my draconian efforts to keep this board a cut above.
