Woo Hoo!!
Just checked my bank account on-line, and it's showing my state income tax refund posted as of Monday, 2/10. Gotta love e-filing and direct deposit!

A round of virtual beer on me!

Thanks I needed a virtual beer. State of Illinois said that because the deficit is so big, people shouldn't expect their refunds for at least 6 months. And I don't think they are paying interest, either!

If you owe, just tell them your deficit is too big and they can expect to get their money in about six months.

Back it up with your 2nd amendment right to keep and bear arms.

Oh I forgot, you people in Illinois don't have that right, do you?

Sure we have the right to bear arms and we won't be put to death for doing so! Thank you Geo. Ryan!

Is it possible for mistakes to happen on W2 forms? I just got my W2 from a job I worked part-time in college. First of all they were late mailing it out. I just received it today and it was postmarked 2/7/03. Isn't that illegal? I also think there was a mistake.. it said I had a total gross income of $1500 with only $43 taxes taken out. Another job of mine I had a total income of $2700 with $273 taxes.

Miss Opie, yes, there can be mistakes - it can be a pain if you're ready to file and half to wait longer for your refund. I don't know about it not being "legal" to send it out after 1/31/03....

Yes, there can be mistakes on W2's. But amount of taxes withheld can vary by type of job and method used to calulate witholding.

Your employer is supposed to have your W2's postparked by Jan. 31, but there is a grace period that gives them until Feb. 15. If you don't have your W2's by Feb 15, call the IRS office nearest you. They'll make the employer squirm abit and might give you a break in filing.

I have my W2 form now but that is because I had to request it. A friend of mine is still working there and I had her to ask them about my W2 and their reply was, "we don't mail them out." I am now 2 hours away from them and I hope they didn't think I was going to drive down there for that. She had to give them my address. Isn't that the employer's responsiblity to mail out the W2 and find the employee's current address? If I had not said anything to them I probably wouldn't have it by now.

Miss Opie
It IS the employer's responsibility to get them to you. Not sure that it has to be mailed. If you changed mailing address it is your responsibility to make sure employer has your current address.

I gave them my new address when I moved. They had the address, they just did not want to waste .37 to mail it to me. How else are they supossed to get it to me other than mail when I am 120 miles away?

miss opie, dont waste your gas, they are required to deliver it to you by mail on time. If it doesnt get there report them and let IRS guide them to the path of enlightened self interest. Oh and dont expect any break from IRS If you dont have it. There is a way to make a substitute one but I would suggest using a tax service If you are having these problems as they will take a lot of the heat if its wrong...

Holy Cow, guess I better get going on mine. Although I did just get a statement the other day from a charity I gave to in June. But, a nice fat check would be welcome so I can pay for that new kitchen!

I do mine by mail. Got back $900 last year. Have used refunds the last 20 years to finance summer backpacking trips in the Rockies.

Lyra, I did my own taxes the old fashioned way. Mailed them out third week in January and am getting them third week in February. Not too bad.

Smiley, you gettin' a NEW kitchen? That sounds VERY NICE! Those and bathrooms are the worst on the pocketbook...congrats!

IRS pays me and they hate it!
It pays to work a little. IRS will give me $2,506 this year just for working enough to get maximum EIC with one child. That equates to a bonus about $2.50 for each hour that I worked.

Fed refund should be in my account any day now. Last year it took 8 days from e-filing to direct deposit. We let the gov't take out way too big a loan from us for the year, but, then again, it doesn't get spent during the year, if you know what I mean - heh heh.

Virtual beer is on Chief today!

Close to $3000 here from Federal and State combined. Later this year I'll be moving up to NH, so no more income tax for me (I work in NH, but if you live in Mass you still pay Mass taxes). Most will go towards debt reduction and savings, but I will be buying some nice gear too. I'm planning on getting a nice day pack and some much needed hiking supplies.

so dudes, i'm supposed to file 3 state returns! i haven't done those yet. i work in DC, lived in VA for half the year and MD for the last half. i think i'll pretend i lived in VA for the whole year, though.

A friend of a friend lived in MD in 2001, and late last year, he got a letter from Maryland's State Tax board asking why he hadn't filed a return for 2000 (a year in which he hadn't lived in Maryland), and stating that it was up to him to prove that he didn't owe Maryland any income tax for 2000. I wouldn't play with them if I were you, lyra...

really? i'm sort of wondering if i can get away with it. see, Tarpy is the one who's signed all the apartment leases, and i've never permanently changed my address to MD until this year. also, my car still has VA plates and i still have a VA license. most of that is illegal, but WTF. i'm planning on doing the car stuff "soon"!

Did ever tell the HR people where you work that you moved, lyra? If so, they may have sent the MD equivalent of a W-4 to the MD tax people. In which case, the gig is up...

aaahhhh!! well, maybe i'll think about doing MD. it's just so ridiculous to have 3 jurisdictions within like 15 miles. DC should expand its boundaries, just for me.

Drink up on me Martyb, because if my wife has fer way, like she did with my super bowl winnings, it will go into the check book and/or savings account.

BTW...I won $1200 on super bowl boards while she was in Reno...and she made me put $400 (back) into the check book!!!! I did however take her and two other couples out to Dinner at Cassies Supper Club...my treat of course. There went another $300.

So ya, have all the virtual drinks you can handle...on me!!!!!
