I have no clue what kinda shape we'll be in this year. I worked part time last year and then was laid off for three monthes, with no taxes withheld....Birch has been moving up the ladder slowly....

I guess we'll have to make an appointment and see! I'm sure that there's no shortage of ways to spend any refunds (if there is one).

WOOHOO!!!!!!!
Got the big refund today! Paid bills and got a few bucks left over. Here's my dilemma: I need a warmer sleeping bag. Got the REI Polar Pod+20. Should I get a down bag or is there something else I can get to add warmth that won't take up most of my few extra bucks? What about a silk liner? Any advice? Thanks. I'd rather use the few extra bucks for more than just a couple of things.

A fleece liner works good, but is a little heavy. I've got one I use as my summer bag. Silk liners are supposed to help some, but I'm a little skeptical of exactly how many degrees they'd really add.

I love my silk liner. I do believe it adds a 5+ degrees. Saves the bag from having to be washed so often.

Okay. I think I am going to do the silk thing plus I do have some summer thing I got from REI, too. All three should do the trick. IF I didn't have such a large pad to carry, I could do the fleece thing but gotta have my pad. Silk would be less bulk and weight. Thanks for the advice-a-roo.

I filed!
I filed through turbo tax online and it has been accepted. My refund should be in my bank account in one week. After the auto repairs and credit card bills are paid, I'm going to buy some "fun" stuff. Wyatt will get his first and very own sleeping bag and I'm getting myself a headlamp. If I have enough after that, I want to get a new tent for the family. Should I get the four man for me and three little people or should I invest now in a six man tent in anticipation of my growing sprouts? hmmmmmmm....

I can't wait!

State tax refund direct deposited today! Round o' beer on me!

Last year the IRS took about 4 days longer than the CA tax folks to get us our refund. 'Nother round o' beer in a few days....

Roam, since I know we get refunds, we are highly motivated to get our money back. E-filing and specifying direct deposit makes it lightning fast, especially at this time of the year.

Get this one. NYS has decided to put a line in for out of state purchases. In other words now we have to pay state sales tax on items that were bought out of state. You can leave the line blank, but if you do they can request back files past the regular 3 years in an audit. Greedy bastards.

Wonder if that holds true for those of us who sell stuff on ebay, too? Can they come back at us and make us claim all those measley dollars as income? Guess that was a stupid question, huh?

Actually, I think that Mr. Pataki has included what LZ said, as well as, internet purchases, on this tax form for NYS. But, I am not sure...

I believe in Michhgan, it is up to the seller to make sure they charge sales tax when selling the item. I never did and I have no way to find out how to fulfill this situation as an ebay seller. I know that Michigan does charge a sales tax when buying from a company that does business in Michigan (has a store here) and sells to poeple in that state over the internet. I wonder where all that money went.....

Most states follow the same theory for consumer use tax (i.e. sales tax). NC put that line on their form a few years ago and very few people claimed anything. The state didn't get toooo aggressive in audits as they have no third party reporting to rely on and it's difficult to make a determination.

I'd advise you to put some small amount that's a reasonable amount of your online purchases that you didn't pay tax on. If you bought something from out of state and paid that other state's sales tax then NYS should allow you a credit for the tax paid elsewhere, thus the balance owed them is just the difference - if the NYS rate is higher.

Can you guess what I do for a living now?

Taxable???

Wolfeyes, it's only income if you realized a gain when you sold it. That is, if you sold it for more than you originally bought it for. If you "lost" money on the deal then that loss isn't deductible. But if you had a gain (unlikely) then technically it's taxable. I guess if you did a LOT of that type thing you might could claim some other deductions, like maybe a home office - but that'd be a BIG stretch.

Should Have Mine Very Soon If Not Already
I always file asap because I know I'll get a refund (Federal, that is).

Now filing State and Local taxes is another story because I already figured out that I'll break even...nothing back nothing owed. So they'll get filed sometime before April 15. lol

Maine has had that sales tax thing for a few years. How it works here, is if you don't enter a number - and that number can be zero - they put a number in for you. Don't know how it's calculated though.

They have a tax table for the amount on the form. If I heard right on the news it's something like $65 for people in my tax bracket. I could be wrong on the amount though.

Nigal
I hear ya. I do make estimated payments to avoid the fine and interest, but always end up paying. my wife hates that even after 16 years. She's used to a refund. Guess I'll have to buy her something for V-Day.

Oh, I'm still looking for a 1099 that was mailed 10 days ago.

Nigal, I've always felt like that if everybody had to actually write checks to pay their tax instead of having it withheld that there'd be a lot more hell raised with the congress about the whole stupid system. People who've always had it withheld don't notice how much they are paying. But pay self employment tax just once and you feel it BIGTIME!.

The office I used to work at had a guy who won a radio contest and the prize was a Hooters party brought to the office - they showed up in the Hotters RV with beer, wings and the girls! Pretty cool little party - his dept was pretty small so he was nice and invited a few other folks too.
