best gaiters out there...

Realized saturday that a good pair of shoes is not good enough in the snow.”

“I have the mountain hardwear ventigators. I like them. I have the non-goretex ones. They have a little vent on them if i get too hot.”

“Outdoor Research Crocs or Big Crocs; trust me. Trust me also that the best is not always the best buy. I need the Big Crocs for my plastic boots, but have found that for ordinary boots, Campmor G-Tex or Entrant gaiters are fine, as well as being excellent value for money. OR also make non G-Tex gaiters that have the front velcro closure and they're good too, if a little more expensive. BTW, keep them clean.”

“My father-in-law played for the Florida Gators back in the day. Anyways... he sent me his old gaiters, from his days of living in Alaska, that were at least 20 yrs old. Just plain old coated nylon gaiters. Upon inspection I noticed they are exactly the same materials/design as my sons new gaiters from Campmor - the cheap ones that cost about $15-$20. I have used these old gaiters in deep snow on 3 occasions recently and had no problems. Do not pay $50 for gaiters.”

“Don't get into the car if they (especially Artex) offer you candy, Gemini. BTW, gaiters are unisex. You don't really need a women's size as they are all quite adjustable. The OR's are probably the most adjustable, however (believe me, I are a teecher and cannot lie).”

“Garfum has a point. I don't really see why gaiters need to be made out of Goretex, unless you plan on hiking with them in warmer weather and might sweat underneath. Also, with warmer weather, the ones that come above the calf muscle may be overkill.”

“I like the over-the-calf ones in summer because they keep my legs from getting all scratched up. They can be hot though, I got prickly heat on my ankles once while wearing gaiters on a long roadwalk in August.”

“that's what I was about to ask. so, get them in a size small and not over the calf unless I want overkill. goretex: I really don't sweat a lot, but I am happy with all of goretex stuff so far.

not sure if want to wear the over calf during summer. I may go to the local store here and check them out, try them out and then order them online. Price differences are huge!”

“Just to clarify, Gemini.. if you're getting gaiters for the snow, then I'd definitely get over the calf. You might consider getting a pair of ankle gaitors for summer, if you're worried about pebbles, twigs and such getting in your boots.”

“thanks, I think that helped. wanted to get them mainly for snow and maybe creek crossings (if they're even useful for creek crossings) I am not too worried about pebbles and stuff.”

“If you want to add much warmth to your regular hiking boots for snowshoeing, the OR X-gaiters are really warm. They cover your entire boot with 3/8 inch closed cell foam and 2 layers of coated nylon. I used mine snowshoeing last week with the temps in the low teens and was amazed how warm they are. You can change the foam to open cell for skiing. These are only for winter use in very cold conditions.”

“The best way gemini is to go try several different ones on at the gear store with the boots you normally hike in.”

“yeah, that's what I am going to do. I did see the outdoor research crocks, but I have no idea what I am really looking for (looks, lengh, etc...) so it's best if I try them on first. I do have a good idea now what to ask.”

“I have had the same pair of cheap gy/bl. gaitors since the mid 80's. Cordura bottom and nylon top. They work well at keeping crap out. Not to water resistant though.

This past fall I ordered up some camo GTex gaitors from Cabelas. Quality is way better than my oldies and plus I like the 'quiet' fabric outshell and earthy tone colors. No 'zip, zip' noises when walkling. They will serve a dual purpose, hikin and huntin.”

“Black Diamond makes a gaiter that fits snug enough on your boot you can almost wade in them. I have crossed many creeks where the top of my boot was below the water and my foot stayed dry.”

“OR nylon, not gortex. The are good gaiters.

Skimming, I didn't notice if anybody answered your question about creek crossings. They will help with splashes, slow down how wet your pants legs get, but won't keep water out.

My favorite times for gaiters is on a muddy trail to keep my pants from getting muddy, and in deep snow to keep my feet warmer and keep snow out of my pants legs and boots.”

“Gemini, you can always losen the top of the the (over the calf) gaiter and scrunch it down to your ankle in summer. I think if you're only going to purchase one type , (long or short), you should buy long....they're more versatile.”

“I wish EMS had those in stock the last time I bought gaiters rosey. I ended up getting the EMS Summits, which aren't bad, but I don't like the snap at the bottom. It tends to get caked with mud or ice.”
