Looking for helpful suggestions
This weekend, Maple and I are taking our Cub Scout Pack out to Camp Alpine on the Palisades in New Jersey. I want to finish training in using a compass(something we started on our last outting) and end it off with a big scavenger hunt using their compasses. I want it to be fun, and at the same time, educational. Anybody have any suggestions on some of the finer points of planning something like this?

No suggestions, treebeard, but it sounds like a ton of fun, and would be more than worth the effort putting it together! I bet the scouts will really enjoy it!

Hey, that camp is just a few miles from my house! Too bad I'll be up in the Adirondacks. :-P

Oh, it's going to be, SG. I already have some ideas on how to do it. So does Maple. I just want to elaborate oon it and get as much input as possible. I'll probably post something on it next week.

I could dress up like a bear and hide in the woods.

No thanx, John. Don't want to be cleaning poop out of their little pants....

I just about choked on my lunch with the thoughts of Artex in a Boy Scout uniform (at his age)

LOL funny stuff! But it would have been cool to have you show up. Anyone else in the area and wants to help you can.

All assistant scoutmasters and committee members of a scout troop are required to wear the uniform.

When I was involved in Cubs, we took them on a snipe hunt, except the Cubs were in on the snipe hunt. We nailed one of the fathers who was a bombastic blowhard. The kids just loved nailing an adult. We were all enjoying the hot chocolate and sassafras when the dork showed up with burrs in his pants and told us he knew it was a gag all along. Yeah, sure. Have a cup of hot chocolate, Motor Mouth!

If you'll be there at night, you can use light sticks at each location along the course. We've done that with our Troop. It's a totally different feeling in the dark, not seeing any reference points & depending only on your compass skills.

That's a pretty good thought, Spike. Thanx for the suggestion.

a couple of ideas

1. grab bag for all the boys (this way everyone is a winner)

2. use sticks to mark the correct spot X=marks the spot

3. break the boys into groups. they will learn to worktogether

Let them get lost for an experience they will never forget. They will love you for it for life.
