what pack should I buyView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 39 of 39 messages posted.
what pack to buy? “Hey I have finally came up with some money to purchase a real pack not that spawding thing I have been using. I am looking for an external fram pack because when I go packin I am the sherpa of the family. I really need like a 4,500 pack or larger but not bigger that 5,500 I think. I want to try to keep the pack light but because I am on a budget I cant be too picky. what have you guys seen that works for under 150 or so.” 3:01:55 PM 2/11/03 “Check out the Mountainsmith Circuit. 5000 ci and costs about 139 bucks at Campmor. I have the Mountainsmith Pursuit, a smaller version, and it's a great pack. Lightweight, strong, and inexpensive..” 3:09:09 PM 2/11/03 “Correction: The Circuit is a 6000 ci pack.” 3:11:34 PM 2/11/03 “Is that external frame, Artex? Go to www.northernmountain.com and check out the Dana Design external frames. They're usually quite cheap...” 3:13:04 PM 2/11/03 “For just $237 you can get the Osprey Aether 60 its one of my favorite backpacks 3700 ci. 8)” 3:17:43 PM 2/11/03 “Roseymonster, nope it's an internal.” 3:25:47 PM 2/11/03 “Try looking at gearfinder.com At least you can separate the internals from the externals.” 5:13:01 PM 2/11/03 “Packs are a very personal thing. The same pack does not work for everyone. Make sure you buy your pack at a retailer that will take it back after you wear it backpacking. You won't know if it works until you actually use it.” 5:51:39 PM 2/11/03 “I wish I could find a store that would take back used lingerie.” 5:55:42 PM 2/11/03 “Golite Trek is huge and light with outside pockets and a pocket inside for a platy. I love mine.” 6:04:42 PM 2/11/03 “Whoops it's not an external frame. Nevermind!” 6:06:00 PM 2/11/03 “You should be able to find an external frame pack in that price range. It best to just go shop around and try on as many different packs as you can. Since you want an external there isn't as many to choose from compared to internals. Just buy what feels best to you. Lots of people like the Dana Longbed, but it didn't feel good on my back and I hated that pack. That's just an example of how important it is to try before you buy. For really big loads on developed trails it's tough to beat an properly designed external frame. I have a Camp Trails external that I reworked the suspension on to custom fit myself with a homemade hipbelt and shoulder straps. It's one of the best packs I've ever used and can haul comfortably more than I can even lift.” 6:16:01 PM 2/11/03 68$$$ for artex's pack at ramsyey out door “I tryed it on last saturday. It didn't fit me but, it looks like a good pack... 4,000cuin” 6:36:13 PM 2/11/03 “balloonman, check out your thread from sass, we still got that sleppy bag or ya, we need your address.” 7:21:20 PM 2/11/03 GET you a BIG OLD MAMA.... “Not a brand name just an expression. Don't worry about weight...just be comfortable. You can carry more beer, cigars, and every now and then a blow up chick if you get a big un. (just every now and then on the chick as I keep having to repair her) Look at Jansport. They are "gar-ran-teed" for life and have great belt system and all sizes and weights.” 9:01:24 PM 2/11/03 What pack should I Buy “www.northernmountain.com/kdlist.html cut and paste this in, and look at the Dana Externals $99. In your price range, I think these are the best buy,for a real load monster although Kelty makes good packs.” 9:16:56 PM 2/11/03 “Check out the new Backpacker Gear Guide, March Issue.” 9:31:41 PM 2/11/03 “I have the Mountainsmith Circuit 6,000. I like it, and it is inexpensive.” 9:35:44 PM 2/11/03 “You want an external because you're the sherpa? How much moola you want to spend? If you're worried about weight, go for an internal with polycarb stays. They are a million times stiffer then any metal and will center the load on your back better.” 8:43:00 AM 2/12/03 “I stay on well kept trails and haul a on family trips I end up with 40+.” 2:04:11 PM 2/12/03 “Hey Budda bear that gear is working out great thanks” 2:04:53 PM 2/12/03 “I'm going with the "Warpspeed". Read mostly good things on it, as long as you stay under 30lbs. That is my goal for food and water for a three day trip. Getting it at R.E.I. so the returning it part is a no brainer if it don't work out. Come on dividend!!!” 12:28:20 AM 2/13/03 “it isnt an external but you might want to take a peek at the moonbow gearskin....” 4:08:59 AM 2/13/03 “I may as well jump in on this one as I'm gonna need some help. My old faithful daypack has suffered the humiliation of my cat pissing on it (man did that gym locker smell when I opened it!) - anyhow, I think it's time to retire this much loved friend, any recommendations for something about 3,000 ci? Alternatively any suggestions for getting the smell of cat urine out a daypack?” 9:16:48 AM 2/13/03 “Try soaking it in a tub of water with baking soda in it. A lot of baking soda. That should neutralize the acidic cat piss, and remove the smell.” 9:30:14 AM 2/13/03 “thanks, I'll give that a go, I used some neutralizing stuff from Petco, and it's been through the washing machine three times, but the smell is still there - anyone want a cat?” 9:33:09 AM 2/13/03 “Good luck. Cat piss smell is really hard to get out. If you want to get a new pack, I'd look at the Osprey Aether series. Here's the Aether 45. The large model is 3000 c.i.” 9:37:17 AM 2/13/03 “thanks, that looks pretty good, I'll try and find one in a store to play with for a while” 12:21:45 PM 2/13/03 “Oh, here's a good story. On my first backpacking trip, my brother brought along a stuff sack that had some Mountain House meals in it. He opened up the sack the first night we were out, and the odor of cat piss struck him like a 2x4 across the face. His roommate's cat had pissed on the sack, with the food in it. Fortunately, we had other stuff to eat that night...” 12:23:53 PM 2/13/03 “I guess it's my own fault with the cat, I tend to come home from the gym in the morning and dump the bag with sweaty kit in it on there floor. I guess the smell was a little strong and he decided to 'mark' it - so I guess I can forgive him. I did find him chewing on my tooth brust the other day though - he just jumped on the sink and started knawing on the bristles, I was shocked at first then it got worse as I realized this was probably not the first time he'd done this.” 12:30:58 PM 2/13/03 “Cats are filthy, disgusting animals.” 12:40:24 PM 2/13/03 “I'll agree with 'DOM',about the 'Dearskin'.So many options of loading when you never know what you'll have to carry.Starts empty at lower weight ,but is capable of loads.” 12:54:34 PM 2/13/03 Dirtyoldman “I have a gearskin, you want to buy it?? 28 oz. Black with large mesh pocket.” 5:51:18 PM 2/13/03 “Opsrey packs rule!!!! 8)” 5:56:22 PM 2/13/03 “Also have a Osprey "Finese" for sale too!” 6:52:46 PM 2/13/03 “Didj: Why don;t you like the gearskin?” 6:56:26 PM 2/13/03 “So if you could buy ANY pack, which one would you buy? no restrictions on price” 7:51:58 PM 2/13/03 I'm picky I guess “Could not get this set-up so it would not pull back on my shoulders. Tried some of the suggestions I got with no real satisfaction. It also is kind of a pain to load the way it is made for.” 7:57:26 PM 2/13/03 Diji “Id love too but im still paying off my first marriage....” 3:59:39 AM 2/14/03
