It's true, too! They called them "Ash Babies"!

It was a proxy for what could be a terrorist or nuclear attack. The ash was dangerous to breathe because at that location the particle size was sorted down to the size that would jam in the alveoli sacs in the lungs. I think 60% of the particles were the criticle size. So they made us stay indoors for a week. Some people did seal their homes off with plastic. It was getting into people's carburators and scatching the pistons in their cars. What a mess!

So, if Korea launched one of their missiles over to the West coast, hitting, say Seattle at 8:00am, given the prevailing winds, Montana would get hit with the fallout about 4-5:00pm.
