Terror threat/ backpacking plans

“Has anyone curtailed or changed their plans because of the terror threat? Maybe to stay close to the family or just to be able to stay informed.
My guard unit has the policy that you cannot be anywhere, for more than 48 hours, that you cannot be reached by phone. In other words, a five day trip into wilderness with no cell service is out of the question. Also, if anything did happen, I would want to be close to my family, or able to respond to my unit whatever the case was.”

This latest is a ridiculous knee jerk reaction. It has been a long time since I have seen anything as silly as the plastic film and duct tape craze in this area yesterday.

“People in my area are supposed to have duct tape and plastic anyway because of our proximity to the Anniston Army Depot Chemical Weapons Station. They have an incinerator there that is supposed to start getting rid of the US's chemical weapons stockpile. I didn't stock up because of that and I won't bother for this. I do need to get some more duct tape for my backpacking repair kit, but will wait so that I don't look like one of the reactionaries.

On a side note I took a long day hike the day of the Columbia disaster. I was weird to come out of the woods and hear what had happened. At first I thought they were talking about the Challenger anniversary and then I realized the truth. Very sad and shocking.”

“With North Korea having a missile than can reach our west coast, the threat of a terror attack is going to be somthing we have to live with all the time. Since a little plastic and duct tape is unlikely to do much to prevent this, I might as well continue backpacking and enjoying life as usual.”

We were on the JMT during 9/11, climbing a 14K peak 3 days from our resupply, and didn't see many people after. One group of 4 came from MA, their plane was told to land in Chicago (?), and they spent the night at the airport thinking they could catch the next flight out. By the 3rd day, they decided to do a 1900 mi / 28 hr drive to CA so they could backpack the Sierra. We saw them on 9/16. We saw their names in the register on Mt Whitney, so they made it. We heard a lot of people cancelled their trips so those who went to the ranger station were able to get permits for Whitney with no problem.

WLD, JDsmiling, Maddwalker, Tery4U and Poppycock still showed up 3 days after 9/11 with our resupply, including the LA Times, so we could see what was happening in the world. (now those are real friends, even with the world in trouble, they weren't going to let us down). It was a shock to us, but we continued our trek for another 8 days. It was eerie, jets would fly by two or three at a time every 2-15 minutes, or sometimes there was silence for hours.

I won't change my plans this weekend.”

I would go anywhere. I'm not changing my plans or my work which includes time at the fed courthouse in NYC.

“Yeah, it doese seem a bit scary-and obviously I hope nothing at all happens in regards to the threats.

Best scenario-they catch them (those promulgating the threat, or those attempting to carry it out)without injury or incident. Next best scenario-nothing happens, due to the heightened security or due to the threat being an empty one, meant to disrupt/distract.

I haven't been doing much hiking lately (I've been seriously into cycling&cycle touring lately-hence off of this board for a long while), but I allways enjoyed a nice hiking trip much more than equal time spent in Boston(heck I live here-I can allways go into the city-but how often do I get out?).

For example, I was doing a little cycling in Europe over the summer (Budapest to Istanbul). A couple weeks before I was to get to my journeys end, I had heard of the attempted disruption of the NATO conference-several bombings, one a suicide, along with a rumured attempt against President Bush. Many backpackers were changing plans to either delay going to Istanbul during NATO, or avoid the city all together. I feel bad for those that missed out experiencing the sites/sounds/flavors of city due to fear.

I submit that rather than pack up and get out due to fear, pack up and get out-for the fun of it(you live there, so you get to enjoy NY whenever you want, say when the weather is too crappy to go for a nice hike). If I were currently traveling with ANY of those areas(NY,NJ,DC) as my destinations I'd still go-and the heightened security would probably make things safer anyways.
