Two good ones.

I figure it this way for next season. Either the Phillies will do well, in which case the stadium will be sold out and I have to go watch the minor league teams, or the team will do lousy, in which case I will go watch the minor league teams.

Frank Deford said this morning on NPR that rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for OPEC.

"rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for OPEC.”?

Lousy analogy. OPEC produces something useful that people around the world need.

Oh, spare me! What's the Red Sox payroll? Like, a couple hundred thou below the Yanks? Give me a freakin' break!
Treebeard

Well, using last years figures, the difference between NYY and BOS's payrolls was more than the payroll of the bottom 12 teams. Or, to be more accurate, $58,126,971.

geobeet

In addition, it's more than the combined payroll of the bottom two teams, in terms of team salaries.

Yankees' payroll reaches $205 million

This is more than the annual GDP of Tonga, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, and Sao Tome and Principe.

I'll bet half that payroll you can't even SAY those places...

Ha! They already ripped the baby Yankmes a new one. I saw the Binghamton Mets in the midst of a three-game sweep of the Trenton Thunder last summer.

Should be an interesting subway series somewhere out there in the future. Perhaps sooner than later. Then again, maybe the mercenaries don't get the job done and both teams tank. Never can tell.

Mets could wind up in better shape than the yanks this year. Glad Willie Randolph is on board. He was always a class act...

BTW, I heard the Mets picked up Miguel Cairo also on a one year deal. I always thought he was a pretty good hitter..

Yes, and a pesky one too. One of those faces that when you see him at the plate, you wonder if he's not hitting every third hitter. Him again?

And the damnedest thing is, he's young. What will it be like when he grows up?

But we've got Charlie Manuel. He was Jim Thome's manager in Cleveland, don'tcha know. Knows how to manage players, don'tcha Charlie.

"Hell yes, I know how to manage players. I'm a good manager, you'll see. I can be tough!"
Geobeet

Well, maybe he can. But he's got his work cut out for him with the Braves and the Mets both making significant improvements. And we don't need to ask Bobby Cox if he can manage.

Be still my beating heart. On the same day the Mets announced Carlos Beltran and the Yankees Randy (Get the $*#& out of my way) Johnson, the Phillies announced the signing of Terry Adams. Gotta run out and buy my World Series ticket right now.

Don't get them so fast, Geo. It was a misprint. It wasn't Terry Adams. It was Gerry Adams and three other future members of the Sinn Fein movement. They aren't known to be the best at baseball! :)

I don't follow baseball much...

But today I met Gary Matthews. We had quite an extensive conversation. He talked about, among other things, missing Arizona weather (spring training) while he's up here in Chicago for a couple days. We also talked about moose of all things, so I told him about the time I almost walked into three of them on Isle Royale.
