So, all it takes for the Red Sox to win is for poor Terry Francona to go to the hospital with chest pains?

I wish I was as poor as Terry Francona. That's a form of poverty I could live with.

Dang, the blood clots I had left a messed up leg. I feel for the guy.

Alright, ya got one back! 2 games to 1, sixteen games left to play.

Backslacker... I'll bet you 50 push-ups that the Red Sox will win the majority of the 19 games they play against the Yankees this season. Of course, we'd be on the honor system. Whadda ya say?

Alex Rodriguez is an ass. I don't like him.

Went to the Mariner's game last night. The Twins really did a number on them. Too bad the M's suck now.

I still love Ichiro tho. He's so cute!

Screw the honor system, we hike the Whites or the Skills together and do 'um at camp!

Ps. Can I do ten at a time? LOL

Pixie, Ichiro is an amazing hitter. That's awesome you got to see him play. Those Twins are tough to beat. Peter Gammons and Jayson Stark, two prominent ESPN writers, both picked the Twins to win it all this year.

You're on, Backslacker. 10 at a time is fine. I'd probably need to do the same, but I don't plan on losing. :-)

Speaking of sucks, the Fightins lost to the Gnats again today. It must be Larry Bowa's fault.

Didn't they start the season with a 1-game win streak?
BowlderMan

Yes indeedy. They were in first place all of Tuesday. And there was an article in the paper about how important it is to get the season off to a good start, so that's what they did. They won the first game. Unfortunately, nobody said a word about the second and third games.

And now they're off to St. Loser.

Same old Phillies

Starring:

Tim Worrell as Kevin Mildew
Kenny Lofton as Marlon Byrd
David Bell as Juan Bell
Charlie (Aww Shucks) Manuel as Larry (Awww Bleep) Bowa (Hey, it's gotta be somebody's fault!)
Ed Wade as the brain dead woman
Brett Myers as 'The Head'
Jim (Can't hit with RISP) Thome as himself

And a cast of thousands of booing fans

Brought to you by Citizens Bank, not your typical drivvel

Coming soon to a ballpark or TV station near you.

Ahhhh, for Phillies fans, life is never dull. It's always something.

Kenny Lofton is blaming the outfield wall for his inability to catch anything hit to center in the last three games. Because of that dastardly outfield wall, he's been running around in circles trying to catch up with the ball. I think the wall has been jumping out at him. Yes, ... that must be it. Damn wall didn't do that to Marlon Byrd, but what the hey, ... he's down on the farm while Kenny Lofton is logging frequent chaser miles in the outfield at Citizens Bank Park!

They should put a pedometer on him. He may run more miles than a marathon runner.

"Awww shucks, we'll be alright, ... you'll see."

But it would be untrue to say the Phillies can't do anything right. Tim Worrell and Rheal Cormier threw batting practice to the Gnats. Not their fault the teams were playing a game at the time. I mean, nobody told them the game had started two hours earlier ...

I think the players are still suffering from wounded psyches because of Larry Bowa, and the amazing thing of it is that even players who came from other teams are suffering. He may be miles away, but they know he's scowling at them. They get so rattled they forget to cash their paychecks! Poor kids!

Oh, and the fans too. They're not coming to the park. And those who do show up boo. The nasty fans seem to think the team is supposed to win, of all things.

Important Question:

If a run scores on a wild pitch, does it count as an earned run?
BowlderMan
12:34:02 PM

I'm not a walking rule book, but I'd say not. It was a gift of a benevolent pitcher. Or perhaps a bored pitcher. It's hard to stay focused when some idiot is dancing off third base.
Geobeet

I'm pretty sure that's an unearned run, although it doesn't seem right.
bitpusher

That was my first guess. The only reason I thought it might be earned is that a bases loaded walk (assuming the bases were loaded by hits or walks) would be an earned run, even though it, too, would be scored by virtue of a gift of a benevolent pitcher.
BowlderMan

I think the rule is that any run that scores on an error, or as a result of an error, is unearned, regardless of who commits the error.

OK, I found the answer on MLB.com:

"...An earned run shall be charged every time a runner reaches home base by the aid of safe hits, sacrifice bunts, a sacrifice fly, stolen bases, putouts, fielder's choices, bases on balls, hit batters, balks or wild pitches..."

To second what's already been said, Flores wild pitch meant the runs were earned. I thought otherwise, too.

I sure hope the Phils are just that good and the Cards aren't just that horrible. Burrell was a monster!

Today's headline (what's wrong with this statement?): "A second big win over the Cardinals had the team believing in itself."

Let's see if I understand this. They signed Thome, Wagner, Lieber, Lofton, Offerman, ... they have several home grown studs: Abreu, Rollins, Utley, Burrell, ... there is no reason the five starting pitchers can't average 15 wins apiece, ... the bullpen should be lights out, ... they have a bench that would drive any manager mad with envy: Polanco, Pratt, Perez, ... they are the fourth highest team salary in baseball, ... they've been picked to contend in each of the last three seasons, ... they have a brand spanking new ballpark, ... and they didn't believe in themselves???

WTF?

Baltimore Orioles - New York Highlanders/New York Yankees
I think Milwaukee had a team that moved to one of the other 16 pre-expansion cities, but can't remember which.

No, the Braves came from Boston and I accounted for them.

Checked it out and the original Milwaukee Brewers became the St. Louis Browns in 1901 or 1902, which became the Baltimore Orioles in 1954.

I think that does it.

Yes, I know bit. From my original post: Boston Braves - Milwaukee, Atlanta

They won it all in 1958.

Spahn and Sain and pray for rain was the slogan in their final years in Boston. I remember well the 1958 team with Spahn, Eddie Matthews, Hammerin Hank Aaron, Lew Burdette, Joe Adcock, ... that was some team.

I seem to recall that Burdette threw nine perfect innings and lost the game in extra innings.

I can still see Spahn and that high leg kick of his. That man could air out his toes!

Nosiree, that, sir, is the Philadelphia A's Historical Society Museum. There are afternoons when one can wander in there and hear old codgers argue whether Ferris Fain was better than Del Ennis and other such esoteric lore. It's a slice of baseball heaven.

My "shrine" is nowhere near that complete, nor as well presented.

Incidentally, there are some errors in that presentation. Assuming they are supposed to be in chronological order from right to left, newest on the left, the second and third from the right are transposed and the cap on the second newest uniform is not correct. Third uni and cap on the right are the 1910 version and second are the 1915 version.

We're now 3-3 thanks to the beneficience of the St. Loser Cruds and Scotty Rolen.

Okay, Scotty didn't screw up, but his new team lost two out of three to his old team, the lousy defector.
