How is Thirsty Thursday different from Thirsty Monday, Thirsty Tuesday, Thirsty Wednesday, Thirsty Friday, Thirsty Saturday and Thirsty Sunday????

Thursday is just another day in Memphis.

So here's the matchup for tomorrow morning's championship.

Tigers (us): 15 wins, 4 losses, 3 shutouts.

Twins (them): 17 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie (ties occur sometimes because there is a 2-hour limit at this level), 3 shutouts.

Tigers: 174 runs scored (9.2 per game); 69 runs allowed (3.6 per game)

Twins: 183 runs scored (9.6 per game); 76 runs allowed (4.0 per game).

Season series:
First game - Tigers 15, Twins 7.
Second game - Twins 4, Tigers 1.
Total both games - Tigers 16, Twins 11.

My ridiculously complex spreadsheet that calculates all kinds of useless run scoring ratios predicts a 5.1-4.8 Tigers' victory, which basically means anything can happen....

Hee hee! After each game, we ask the kids to recall good plays that their teammates made. Last night, one kid raised his hand, then forgot what he was going to say, so I asked him if he was going to comment on the excellent third base coaching. One of the other parents said, "Yeah, he was watching the other team."

Maple, the Yankees need your support - they're all in a state of severe depression after getting no-hit by a bunch of nobodies!

Geo, you must be proud. The current issue of Sports Illustrated for Kids lists the Phillie Phanatic as the number one mascot!
Martyb

We've known that ever since he hopped out of the egg. The guys to have been the Phanatic have uniformly been great people. What they do to cheer up horribly injured kids at Christmas time would make a real tear jerker. I've seen them make suffering kids crack a smile and a laugh. It's just beautiful. And that is besides the crazy, zany antics in the stadium during games.

I am one of the few people who got the Phanatic back. He was making fun of my gut, hoisting his considerable girth in mockery. So I did the same and pointed to his, and he walked off waving his paw at me.

Winning is exhilerating. Becoming a sportsman develops character.

Martyb, you deserve accolades for giving your time to help youngsters to do both.

Yes! I haven't seen too much of the Phanatic, but just his (its?) on-field antics are outstanding - good fun for all. Cameron is a big fan of Stomper, the A's mascot, who does a pretty good job entertaining the fans, too.

Thanks, Chili. I have noticed that the kids at this age seem to be developing more emotions about their performance, and we work really hard to teach them to show good sportsmanship: no stomping around after striking out or making an error; no arguing calls; recognizing an opponent's good play; etc. It's interesting, because many of the best adult athletes in every sport get very angry with themselves when they fail, but they are able to turn that energy into something positive to help them succeed. That's a more complex concept than 7 & 8 year olds can grasp, but hopefully they have learned something from us this year....

My alma mater just won their opener in the CWS:

Stanford 8, South Carolina 0.

2-hit shutout; kid from Cameron's school 3-for-5 with 2 ribbees.

Next up is LSU or Cal State Fullerton.

Champions!!!!!!!!
That's right! Cameron's team won the championship game this morning, 20-12 in extra innings! Wow! The kids had probably their worst game of the season in the field through the first 4 innings, but we were only down by a few runs at any point in time. In the bottom of the 5th, the other team had runners on 1st & 2nd with 2 outs, and their batter hit a nice base hit to left. Cameron fielded it and heaved a throw home. It was a perfect throw to the catcher, who tagged the kid out for out #3!!! That was the turning point in the game. We tied it up in the top of the 6th, held them in the bottom, then ripped off hit after hit in the top of the 7th. We also shut out the other guys in the bottom of the 7th to seal the win! Cameron was 3 for 3 at the plate. Oh, the third base coaching was superb....

KC now has the "T-Bones". I haven't been to a game yet, but the ballpark looks like a nice one.
The miracle of this season, though, remains that the Royals are only four games out of first and just took two out of three from my beloved Giants.

Well, ya got 20 runs across, so I guess that speaks for itself. If the team had been shut out, that wouldn't speak well of the third base coach.

So congrats, coach!

Sounds like Cameron has it going.

Woo-hoo! Big win for the Cardinal at the CWS yesterday. The game got tied up on a 2-run homer by a kid who went to Cameron's school through 8th grade. Another 2-run homer in the 10th sent Stanford into the championship series this weekend against Rice. Beat the Owls!

Ironically, I'll be backpacking this weekend, and will probably miss both games. I guess I can hope Stanford loses one of them so they have to play on Monday night. Another event I'll be missing is the US T&F championships, which are being held at Stanford this weekend - all the big names are there because the top three finishers in each event go to the Worlds.

Red Sox 25, Marlins 8
This would of been a fun game to watch. Some interesting notes on todays game:

THE BOSTON RED SOX SCORED 10 RUNS TONIGHT BEFORE AN OUT WAS RECORDED, WHICH SETS A MAJOR LEAGUE RECORD. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS NINE RUNS BY THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES AGAINST THE NEW YORK GIANTS ON AUGUST 13TH, 1948.

BOSTON'S JOHNNY DAMON TIED A MAJOR LEAGUE RECORD WITH THREE HITS IN AN INNING. IT IS ONLY THE SECOND TIME IN MAJOR LEAGUE HISTORY THAT A PLAYER HAS ACCOMPLISHED THE FEAT. BOSTON'S GENE STEVENS WAS THE FIRST PLAYER TO ACHIEVE THE MILESTONE VERSUS DETROIT ON JUNE 18TH, 1953.

THE GAME WAS DELAYED WHILE TRAINERS TENDED TO FLORIDA PITCHER KEVIN OLSEN WHO WAS HIT ON THE BACK OF THE HEAD BY A LINE DRIVE OFF THE BAT OF TODD WALKER.

FLORIDA PITCHER KEVIN OLSON WAS TAKEN OFF THE FIELD ON A STRETCHER IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH INNING AFTER BEING HIT ON THE BACK OF THE HEAD BY A LINE DRIVE OFF THE BAT OF TODD WALKER.

BOSTON MANAGER GRADY LITTLE AND BOSTON PITCHER HECTOR ALMONTE WERE EJECTED IN THE TOP OF THE NINTH INNING AFTER ALMONTE THREW A PITCH BEHIND ANDY FOX AFTER BOTH TEAMS HAD BEEN WARNED IN THE BOTTOM OF THE EIGHTH INNING.

ChiSox Tattoo Change
Think you had a rough Tuesday? Willie Harris of the White Sox not only lost playing time at two positions, he also had to surrender his uniform number.

Harris will switch from No. 12 to No. 13 to accommodate Alomar.

"I've been wearing 12 for a long time and have it tattooed on my body," Harris said. "But I have no superstitions with 13. It's the lowest number they had in there."

Harris, who has started at second base for four consecutive games, expressed no bitterness about losing his job to Alomar.
