“Heard a funny Cal Ripken story this morning on XM radio. Billy said Cal (he calls him Junior) got into a squawk with an umpire with an 0-2 count on him and was tossed. The player they put in to replace him tried to bunt down the third base line, but he hit the ball a little too hard. Gary Gaetti was playing deep with the 0-2 count, but charged in and just got the runner at first. Because the pinch hitter was out, Ripken was charged with the at-bat. If the pinch hitter had gotten on, he'd have been credited with the at-bat and the streak would never have taken off. This apparently happened about 1990 in Memorial Stadium according to Billy.”

“Went to Pac Bell / SBC / AT&T Park last night. We had GREAT seats, especially since they were sheltered from the 30 mph wind! Gigantes won 4-1 (Rockies only have 4 runs in their past 5 games). Saw a couple o' triples, the most exciting kind of hit in baseball, although none by the NL leader, 42-year-old Steve Finley. Matt Cain pitched for our side, coming off of a 1-hit shutout. He wasn't as sharp, but lasted 5-2/3. I'll post a few pics I took later today or tomorrow....”

“You missed Barry's 715th. They cut away from the Tennessee-Michigan game in the womens college world series. Totally pi$$ed me off!”

“Yeah, missed it by ONE game! I did have my "Hank Aaron 715" model glove with me when we went - I recently replaced some of the strings in it that had broken over the years.

Apparently, the Giants' radio announcer's mike went dead right after he said "It's a line drive to cen---" Oops.

When we went to the game, we could see the Giants' TV announcers, Mike Krukow and Glenn Kuiper (Kruk and Kuipe) in their booth. B-son and I shouted Krukow's trademark strikout phrase "GRAB SOME PINE, MEAT!" But he didn't seem to hear us....”

“Sure enough, that soph kid pitched a complete game shutout last night, launching our hometown team into the finals! It was a pretty exciting game, with some nice defensive plays (a few errors, too) and timely hitting. Championship game is Saturday....”

I think Dontrelle's pitching tonight or tomorrow - how's he been doing? (My neighbor coached him for a few years in summer leagues - he recently compared his current sophmore pitcher to DW.....)


BTW, our local high school did indeed win the sectional championship on Saturday, 7-3. The neighbor kid started and went 5-2/3, and the soph came in to close it out. It was a lot of fun - there were close to 2,000 people there; they played at the UC Berkeley diamond....”
