Before I attempt this and blow something up...
Can a person hook up a DVD/VCR to your computer monitor? I'm just wanting to watch DVDs for now. It's an Emerson EWD2202... just purchased!

I'll go check their website, but just wondered if any of our illustrious TTers had tried it offhand?? (and lived to tell)

I think that you can but it would be much easier to just put it to the TV

You could certainly run it through your computer, via a TV tuner card. It would have a coaxial cable input.

why don't you just download the movie you want to watch to your computer. There are sites out there where you can do that.

Scan Converter
You need what is called a scan converter. It will take an input from one source, such as RCA, and output it to SVGA 70hz. Not really cheap either. Your best bet would be to get a TV card and use your VCR. That'll run you around $30. Another idea would be to get a video card that has a dongle that has RCA inputs on it. Then you could use your VCR or DVD player. Whatever you choose, it will cost you money.

How? I just started looking and found some sites where you pay a yearly fee. Although at least one of them sounds like it prolly puts lovely porno links in with the downloads..... lol

What do you have to do to get an image from a computer to show up on the tv?

i bought something called a Dazzle. It lets me record files from my vcr, camcorder into mpegs, wavs, jpeg, etc, etc. You can find them online, i think walmart, and definately radioshack, but they are more expensive there....i think they also go the other way...mpegs, jpegs and the such onto vhs tape and also onto your tv

I just got a new DVD/VCR and it has all the stuff for that and a bunch of other stuff I don't understand - including MP3.

I'd have to take a course just to read the manual.

I'm feeling old.

If you burn a CD with MP3-encoded music on it, you can put it in your new DVD and play it through your stereo, assuming you have the thing hooked up to your stereo. You can put 11-12 hours of music on a single CD if you MP3-encode it.

You would need a special video card with RCA video input, sound input, and the ability to digitize both into a digital format. They are available, but a little on the expensive side, in comparison to a regular video card.

Or you could get one of these:

KWorld Xpert DVD Maker

I have no idea how well it works, but I imagine it would do the job.

To record VHS to DVD
You can get one of these...

http://www.plextor.com/english/products/TV100U.htm

It's about $100.00 and plugs into your USB port. It turns your computer into a TiVo, you can pause live TV, record a show for later and record from VHS, Video camera, etc to a DVD. It's simple to install and use. I have been using it to transfer a bunch of stuff on tape to DVDs.

The software that comes with it is worth about $100.00.

This really depends on what type of video card you have. If you have a fairly modern one you may have an S-Video port on the back.

Also it depends a bit on your TV. Odds are you will need an RF Modulator to convert the PC signals from S-Video into something the TV can use. These are pretty cheap.

Sorry I can't help more. If you describe your TV inputs and the video card type and it's outputs I can be more specific.

RF Modulators are really cheap.

It might be cheaper to upgrade your video card to one that is more modern and has S-Video than to buy an expensive convertor box.
