I think people should hike with their dogs.

I don't think people should require other people to hike with their dogs.

Use a leash at all times.

I don't think people should take dogs into areas that ban dogs.

Simple rules.

Dog owners refuse to follow.

I don't dislike dogs. I don't like selfish people.

Yeah, I'll save Micah the time. LNT=LDH.

OK, that being said, I like hiking with dogs but just be responsible. Like bacpac says, not everyone likes hiking with your dog. I just had to sell my pup because I wasn't home enough. Happy hiking with your dog.

agree,,,
I am all about hiking with my dog in areas that allow dogs..a leash is always a must. I have been out hiking on several occasions and have come up on loose dogs and dont' know if I can go forward or not as the dog or dogs seem extra aggresive. Those owners are selfish.

Good to know the pack may last at least 3yrs. We hope to go on our first over nite in March, being that Cooper is only 3months now but can hike 9miles I have no worries.

Bruneau has a Granite Gear dogpack. He gets so excited when he sees me get it ready. He knows that he's goin' somewhere.

Only problem is that he loves the water and has a tendency to sink with his pack on......

Bruneau is half Border Collie and half Austrailian Sheppard.

Bodie, the amazing Vizsla, hikes with a Granite Gear dogpack. He did his first overnighter in October at 5 months and is looking forward to the Tahoe Rim Trail this summer.

clem, 9 miles seems excessive for a 3-month old dog. Their leg bones are still growing and too much exercise lead to joint problems, arthritis, etc. What kind of dog is Cooper?

I hike a lot with my dog Sparky, a Border Collie, who is almost 13 now ...still going strong, but slowing down a bit in his old age. He's about 50 lbs; the backpack he uses is a brand name I can't recall. He carries no more than about 5 lbs, most of which is his food. The pack really takes a beating because Sparky has no appreciation for his gear. Spend a few extra bucks and get your dog a good, sturdy pack or s/he shred a cheapo one to pieces real fast, esp. on rough trails. Also make sure the pack fits according to his/her body shape and size ...a too-small pack is very difficult to balance on the dog, and an oversized one will sag low.

Here are some pix taken of me and Sparky on various trails, a few of which show him with his pack on...

I hike with Daphne
I take my Jack Russell Terrier with me when I go solo and sometimes with others if they don't mind. At this point, I debate the solo thing since she has a much better sense of smell and sound than I do. What I can't smell and hear lets me sleep peacefully at night in the almighty woods...when she is with me, she tends to alert me as to what I still don't smell or hear. Then comes the fear from deep in my gut. So far, its only been an angry porcupine.

I love hiking with dogs. Since I don't presently have one, I love hiking with other people who have dogs. Buddur's dog and MSilver's dog are two of the coolest dogs I've ever hiked with!

Are you saying Jerbear is a dog?!

My dog is still "in training". He has a pack, but hasn't been out with it on for awhile. I kinda feel like we need to take him on a few trips w/o guests before we submit others to his whiney self for an overnighter again.

I second the opinion that yer dog shouldn't be wearing a pack until he/she has done a bit more growin'. Our vet told us our dogs shouldn't be going on runs or carrying weight until they're 1 year old at least.

We have cheapy Outdoor products packs for our dogs. Might invest in better packs if they ever become good trail dogs. So far the hunting dog in both of them hasn't made it easy. We have a beagle/elkhund mix and a german shorthair pointer.

i trrained bucky to hike. he NEVER roams away and i would never let him loose if he was a bad doggie. i have been guilty of taking him where dogs were not technically aloowed, but that was my choicec. it was selfish in a way but i also like to give him the opporntunity to hike. it's his favorite thing in the whole world to do. i enjoy having his company. he's a good pup!

Shanedoggy the amazing backpacking Irish Setter carries his pack, sits quietly by the fire, doesn't beg or bother. He's great on the trail. I keep him leashed for not only others' comfort but his own safety. At camp I make a clothesline style doggie run for when I need to focus on set up or cooking etc. I attach his leash with caribiner. We've been hiking since I rescued him a year ago. Just remember, they cannot take a sip from the water bottle while hiking. Watch your dog to make sure he gets enough to drink.

Here we can view Roseymonster in full winter action. Granite Gear pack holding foam pad, booties, food, leash, led blinker for at night. She's wearing a horse-like jacket. On this hike she did about 5 miles in and about 1 mile up to about 10,000 feet. It got down to 8 degrees that night. She was a little cold.

Here she is

MY Dog Cooper....
Well Cooper is a mix Jack russell and something else... I never thought that his legs wouldn't be strong enough. He is nothing but a little muscle. He will be 4 months soon...and is full of energy. I have to add on the 9mile hike he did get to rest several times it was not like I just went steady without ever stopping one time we stoped for 20 mins.

I think he was a great little trooper, hoping that he will be fine.

cute traildoggies!!! PatchyG (now retired as traildog) is an Australian Shep/Border collie mix and she sported an Adventure 18 pack, size medium. I think it is the same as Sparky (whp's human companion is msilver) has.

Here are some trail pics, some with her pack:

Your dog looks like it might have some Rottweiler in him. The paws on him are huge! Either Rott or a husky of some sort? Cool dog! Mine is all Jack Russell "Terror".
