Expedition Kayaking

I'm thinking about getting a kayak, specifically for the purpose of doing some sea kayaking. Of course, I'd still take it on freshwater some, but the challenge of having to navigate in the ocean, know the tides and currents, ect.. is very appealing to me.

Anybody do this?

LOL,

I want to try this!!!!!!

I only have a little inflatable kayak (all right stop laughing at me!!)
this is a great sport to take up. I would love to go do something like. who knows maybe I will someday soon!

FYI. flat lake is so different then ocean. Im a wuss so thats why i stay on flat water. I know they have tour kayaks that you can try. I think if you go to one of them conferences they have for kayaks you may find a cool one you like.
what ever you do, DONT go into Campmor! if you do, bring a bib because you will drool alot.

if you get one and want to do flat water let me know. ill go play with ya!

Hey Fartex! Check out Chesapeake Light Craft, Perception and Dagger. Mighty fine boats...there are many others, but it's a start.

There's some awesome deals in the classified ads at paddling.net.

Great lakes kayaking is my goal. Close enough to a sea, but no nasty ol' salt water. Lake Erie is about forty minutes away.

Went paddle shopping last weekend, chose one but have to wait for my backpay check. The stuff needed to kayak is d@mn expensive. It's not the boat that will drain your bank account! (at least not if you buy a nice used one)

Yeah, Sass, I'd probably get a used one since I'm somewhat new to the sport. Mo' cheapah'. Great Lakes would be great for kayaking, I'd imagine. Very cool!

Hey maple, if you get a regular 'yak someday and wanna unload your inflatable, give us a hollar. Those are what Birch has to use in his adventure races and they handle a bit diffrently than the regular kind. He could use one to practice with.

I'm a calm water wuss. Sea kayaking is too expensive, or at least the cost outweighs my desire to do it. :)

Artex, I know you're hoping to move to the Bangor area - if you do, maybe you could get chummy with someone who works at Old Town canoe. The have some deal where employees can buy three canoes or kayaks in so many years at a deep discout. My brother got me a tandem kayak, paddle and lifejacket 9all brand new) for about $280 - the kayak retails for $600 by itself.

Good luck! The islands off the coast of Maine are awesome to explore!

"Hey Simer, where did your friends do their trips?"

I believe both of them were in maine, 5 day college orientation trips, I don't know the exact details - Char goes to school in brunswick, i know she visited popham beach on her kayak trip, so down the coast along there somewhere.

and maple, you're talking about my canoeing website, right? 'cause yeah, that was an amazing trip - i do wish i could tell you all the adventures this past year's hommes trip had, 'cause that was one wild trip, to me it made getting attacked by a polar bear seem... like not such a big deal, lol - but my trip was great, and i wouldn't give it up for anything.

mapleleaf, you have to check out the collapsible/foldable kayaks, such as Folbot, Klepper, Nautiraid, Feathercraft, etc., as well as the inflatables such as Aire and Innova. Some are pricey, but they do fit in a closet or car trunk then. Lack of storage space is no reason not to have a boat to paddle! (As opposed to lack of $$$.)

I love Seakayaking...
I actually used to subscribe to Seakayaker Magazine...

Mrs. and I have taken lessons for self and assisted rescue in single and double kayaks.

We then seakayaked to an island in the Strait of Georgia off of Vancouver Island. We would love to go back there to seakayak with the orcas.

We have also seakayaked twice in the Bay of Fundy off the coast of New Brunswick, Canada.

We would love to buy our own but it just isn't in the budget right now.... If only we didn't have to give the government so much of our money this year!!!

You will have a lifetime of places to go when you live in Maine.

Also there are many seakayaking schools located along the NE that you could become certified to whatever level you desire.

Since I will be getting a dual major in Biology/Environmental Sciences I have contemplated getting certified as a Sea Kayaking Guide so I could be a biologist for a touring company one day. There was one school I had in mind in MA. It takes a couple of years because you need a certain amount of experience to go to the next level.

There is a bunch of really awesome places to go on the Great Lakes... One og them I have wanted to go is Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. There is an area called Thirty Thousand Islands which is just that! A wonderland of islands to explore.

I would definitely be interested if you guys ever planned a sea kayaking trip! I know others would be also....

if you go in the gulf...like cedar key island hopping... or like out to Cumberland Island....invest in a really nice spray skirt!!! (right rad?) ....unless you get a sit on top like arclite's, then you dont have to worry about breakers and enjoy them....

it is fun

Thanks Om. I've been fishing at Cedar Key dozens of times, but only from the piers. It'd be cool to explore the waters around there.
