It was harder than I thought it would be...
I had to take our 14 year old yellow lab, Jessie, to the vet last night to have he put euthanized. It was time. She apparently had a stroke last Saturday and seemed to be blind in one of her eyes. She had lost most of her hearing since last summer, was losing her balance and she quit eating. I thought it wouldn't be too bad putting her to sleep since her health was deteriorating, but I about lost it when I walked in the office door with her. She had a pretty good dog life; hiking, swimming, sniffing stuff, and fetching sticks. We took one last walkthe night before along a fence where she loved to spend time sniffing. Those dogs sure grow on you.

Sorry to hear that aero. I have a two year old golden retreiver that means the world to me.

My wife is a vet's assistant. She often comes home with a tear jerking story. She also calls me at work all the time about bringing animals home. I have to be the bad guy. Otherwise we'd live in a zoo.

Do you think you'll have another dog soon?

Bummer aero. I think losing a dog is sometimes harder than losing a human family member.

So sad, aero.

As I'm celebrating my brand new niece, my best friend's family is dealing with the unexpected death of an aunt. My friends' mom and her sister who died had a pretty big fight a few months back, and had not reconciled. Her mom is having a really tough time, as you can imagine.

Birth and death all in one day. The only two sure things in this life.

At least your dog died peacefully. The first golden I had, Mozart, uncharacteristically took off after a rabit and into the path of a Mack truck. My wife had to call me home from work because she couldn't even bear to go look.

We named our new golden Mack.

I still visit Mozart's grave occasionally. He was buried on a hill overlooking a creek where he loved to play.

Thanks you guys. I'm practically blubbering here at my desk. I went in thinking so logically that it was the right thing to do, but once you get in the vet's office it all changes. Today feels much better!

It was the right thing to do, but no one said there wouldn't be any emotion with it.

I, too, dread the days when my animals go.

Sorry for your loss Aero. We had to do the same thing last year with our 13 yr old dog. My oldest son had never known a day without her. The loss of a beloved pet and companion(and member of the family) leaves a real void.

I'm real sorry to read about that, aero. It's one of the hardest decisions we have to make. It's like losing a close family member. Time and a new puppy will help heal the hole in your heart.

Sorry to hear about that, aero. People without pets sometimes wonder what all the fuss is about when a pet dies. Those of us who have experienced it know how sad it can be.

Here's a story of our cat's death that may cheer you up...

When Dr. Jekyll died (yes, Mr. Hyde's brother!), the veterinary staff was very sensitive to our ordeal, let us spend as much time as we wanted with him after he died, etc. So I went up to the desk to ask "What now?" They gave me several options - we chose to have him cremated individually and have his ashes returned to us in a simple wooden urn. So a week later, they call to tell us his ashes are back and we can come pick them up any time. My wife stops by on her way home from work, walks in past several people in the waiting room with their dogs and cats, and tells the lady at the front desk in as cheery a voice as possible, "I'm here to pick up Dr. Jekyll." The lady goes into the back and comes out with the urn. She hands it to my wife, who turns around and heads out the door. She said you've never seen eyes get as big as the people's sitting in that waiting room - can you imagine what they were thinking?

Hang in there, dude - go for a long run!

I am smitten with my dog, too and am not looking forward to "that" day. Whether it be me playing God, or God taking her first, it is something I know I am going to take very very hard. She has been my life for almost 5 years. I am sorry for the sadness you are going through.

MartyB, I'm still chuckling about the urn story! I know it's very touchy, but I can imagine the faces of the people in the waiting room.

Aero, that is very sad. Pets are such great companions and you never really think about all the ways they touch your life beyond the usual pet stuff until they are no longer there. Sounds like your dog had a good life :)

Sorry Aero. I know exactly how it feels and it sucks.

Best you can say is that she had a good, happy life and touched you and your family.

Miss her, grieve, and then get a puppy. It doesn't replace her, but it does help.

Aero, on July 5, 2002 we put Jake, our springer down. He had suffered a stroke as well. It was a day after his 14th birthday. It was one of the hardest things we've ever had to do. I think of him everyday.

Here's hoping Jessie and Jake are going to be good friends.

Aero, so sorry for your loss. Like le subtil, I am probably closing in on a day similar to your's. PatchyG will be 17 next month. I cannot imagine life without her, as I've spent more than half of mine with her as my constant companion.

Hang in there. It was a very tough choice you made. I admire your bravery to do the right thing...

Aero sorry for your loss. As I sit at my desk and type this, my black lab Kayla is laying on my feet. I don't even want to think about what I will do when that day comes. But I am sure that you made the right descion, a tough one for sure but the right one.

Just picture Jessie running around playing and chasing birds, she feels no pain, and is able to do all of the things she loves, things that she hasn't been able to do in a few years. She will be there waiting for you one day, eager to play again.

Work is just that!
Well my boss had told eveyone in the shop today at 2:30 pm that we all have to work the whole weekend becuase of a Full Overtime Job for a Power Plant.

Why is this sad you ask?

Becuase I can't go on the Pictured Rocks Trip that I have had my heart set on now for almost 2 months.I don't know if I need to mad and let all my rage out or listen to the old saying.

Life is a big shi! sandwhich and sometimes we all have to take a bit out of it.

I am very unhappy right now.
