Outside or National Geographic Adventure Magazine

“I am trying to make up my mind on which magazine to subscribe to. I have one month left on the National Geographic Adventure magazine but today I got an offer to subscribe to Outside magazine for $ 25.00 a yr. Which magazine do you guys like the best and which would you subscribe to if you had to choose just one.”

“Ewker - Seriously, if I was limited to one, I would not take either one. I would try to review them at a public or school library.

Otherwise, I would select the one that I like the best, or take both (until deciding that there may be too much duplication). If you have been happy with NGA, why would consider switching? If you have a reason, then you might switch for a year and then reevaluate your preference.

What I am recommending is that your decision should be based on what you enjoy, not someone else's likes and dislikes.”

“I subscribe to both, but only recently for NGA. Both are excellent publications.

But 25 bucks a year for Outside?!?! That seems a bit high. I got THREE years of Outside for $36 last September.”

Got the same Outside promo. Have subscribed to both.

Both publications have a few worthwhile issues during 12-15 months, but IMHO not worth the subscription. Browse 'em when you're at REI or some other retailer, buy the issues you like. That will leave you will a few cents for coffee.”

“I get NGA, and I do not like it. It does not have enought to do with BPing. It talks about hiking, climbing, rowing, biking, swing, skiing, all adventure stuff, but is not focased on BPing.”

“Ice Tea, I agree with you. It has great pics but the stories/articles are not that interesting to me and when they do have something that is interesting it is just a very, very short story/article.

Buddur, that is what I paid for it last yr and my renewal is the same price this yr.

I still get backpacker mag. and find it to be a better magazine than the NGA magazine.

I have never picked up the Outside mag to even look at it so I have no idea what it is like.”

“Depends on what you like. These mags have their place. I love both!! I love to read about adventurers, the kinds of things I may never have even thought of. And I like in-depth articles that don't just gloss over topics.

Now if you want backpacking and short articles... look elsewhere.”

“Buddur, I got the same deal! I really like Outside a lot. Even if the stories aren't specifically about backpacking, a lot of times they relate closely (expeditions over new territories, mountaineering, ect.). I admit I'm just an adventure nut in general, so I'm perhaps more broadly entertained by Outside and the like.”

“I vote for Outside! It always has a ton of good reading. I can rarely find the time to read it all. It also has inspired a few of my trips(not all bkpkng).

It's not good for just backpacking, tho. I hope you already receive BACKPACKER magazine.”

“I subscribe to NGA, and buy Outside whenever the mood strikes me. Outside seems to have a more indepth content, with longer, better articles.

National Geographic dissapoints me regularly. This month's issue, however, is pretty darn good. I loved the kayaking through Vietnam bit, and am halfway through the article about Johnny Weathervane, (r whatever his name was), it's very interesting, so far.”

“I like Outside. I had NG for one year and it bored me. I felt it was a waste of money. Outside has gotten much better in the past few years.”

“Backpacker magazine is good if you're new to backpacking, but for little else, IMO. I don't really trust the gear reviews, since the same manufacturers buy ad space and therefore pay their salaries. Pretty boring mag.”

“I agree with Artex about Backpacker. Either I'm more seasoned or the articles have become thin. The one good thing about it is finding new locations, but can do that on line and, of course Here.”

“I was surprised about the swimsuit issue but it seems that it was done in a typically NG way, (and by the way that was National Geographic, not National Geographic Adventure). It looked at the history of the swimsuit and the ways it's changed, etc, along with the hotties in bikinis. I haven't seen it, just heard about it on NPR. NG caught alot of flack for it.”

“ah-h-h..magazines..I still get Bper but it has gotten thin over the years. I subscribed to Outside last year at $12..decided I would save $ and check them out at the local grocery store only buying those few issues which interested me. I tried NGA but plan to do the same with it as Outside when subscription is over..of the 2 I think Outside has more articles than interest me..NGA has more overseas info, it seems..”

“I think they're both pretty strong on the writing front. Outside has the edge though, I think because it is more established. NG isn't bad though and is only $12 a year - Get both”

“Both have some very good writing. I recall NGA had an article on a Northern Afghanistan freedom fighter right before we fought them. Very good article looking at life in the trenches for them. Then the guy was blown up by a suicide cameraman at a supposed TV interview.

I read both and can't recall which this was in: They just had a story on the world's highest, longest running feud. I think it was between India and... hmmm... maybe Pakistan?? In the mountains near Everest. What the guys were going through in this worthless, stupid border dispute. The pollution of having people up there. The writer and photographer hiked in on both sides for the story.

Good stuff beyond the norm.”

“I haven't read NGA, but my father got me a subscription to Outside Magazine for my last birthday and I have been pleasantly surprised. I agree with Artex and a few others about he adventure thing. It doesn't have to be just backpacking to interest me.”

“I think you mean Kashmir..very beautiful place that the British decided would belong to India even though it's primarily Muslim. The Kashmiri's don't want to belong to either India or Pakistan..”

“I get Outside. I've seen various NGA issues and like it better. Of course, it's a personal choice. Outside is more "well-rounded." Articles about working out and gear as well as adventure stories if that's what interests you.”

“I decided to go with the Outside magazine. I looked at the card and realized I had read it wrong, it was 25 issues for $ 25.00. I figure what the heck I tried NGA and didn't like it so now I can check this one out.

Does Outside mag have its own yearly gear guide?”
