Light Reading for the TrailView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 9 of 9 messages posted.
For the non-essentials list “I like to read a little on the trail and like to have a bit of variety but don't want the weight of multiple books, I've found these "Quick Study" guides are cool, they are packed full of info, laminated and quite light. This one about beer is probably a good starter. I think the ones about history, literature and astronomy are my next purchases.” 8:27:57 AM 2/22/03 “I've been thinking about this lately, as paperbacks seem to be growing larger. It seems that some publisher, somewhere ought to start printing books that are smaller, with lighter paper, simular to airmail stationary, specifically intended for backpacking. Think about it, they'd make a fortune if they chose titles carefully. "Walden" "Into thin air", "Cold Mountain"...all their publishers could clean up if they produced lighter tomes and marketed them to hikers and travelers.” 12:36:15 PM 2/22/03 “Yeah, but if you just rip out the pages as you read them and burn them in the campfire, your pack will get lighter.” 1:16:04 PM 2/22/03 “photo copy the pages you intend to read. what are we talking titanium prints, shh!” 1:19:08 PM 2/22/03 “I always take a book or two backpacking, I don't mind the weight. Those study guides are a good idea though!” 2:37:47 PM 2/22/03 “On group trips I carry the Farmers Almanac and a Campmor catalog. On solo trips I carry whatever book I am reading at the time and the Bible.” 6:25:05 PM 2/22/03 “"the backpacker's field manual" it's a textbook, with a lot of very useful information in it. Though I'm not sure if I'll ever encounter a sucking chest wound in the backcountry, I'll know how to temporarily fix it. All you need is a credit card and duct tape.” 6:27:14 PM 2/22/03 “It's not just chest wounds that suck. ALL wounds suck. And the doctor would steal your credit card anyway.” 6:29:28 PM 2/22/03 “He'd have to pry off the duct tape first.” 6:30:31 PM 2/22/03
