Twinkles, what are you looking for? Lots of snow and ice still up there, no doubt. Do you want buttkicking steep or do you want easy like Sunday morning?

AmyG and I love the area around Pharaoh(sp?) Lake. There are alot of trails to use around there and the views are awesome. When are you heading up that way?

oh yeah some specifics - hehehe....

I'm trying to plan a trip for the summer - want lots of water - lakes, waterfalls, streams, etc - am toying with the idea of renting a canoe...

Would like a variety of terrain (if there is no canoe involved! I can just imagine porting a canoe up a peak - yikes!)

Butt-kicking in length (three days - maybe a few more than that - hmmm?) but not neccesarily looking to peak-bag....just a nice long walk in the woods.

Dare,

Don't know when - as of right now - but I will be sure to let you guys know!

Would prefer to avoid a huge group - I'm looking for some quiet, thoughful time - geez, that sounds so artsy-fartsy!

I'd try to go during the work week if possible. It get's awfully crowded, at least in the High Peaks region. As far as picking spots, it's hard to go wrong.

Lake Colden is beautiful, and you have lot's of killer climbs nearby.

Theres alot up there, just about every trail will be near a lake or waterfall. Pharoah is pretty popular though, most of lean to get full pretty quick. I would wait till after black fly season. We went up in May and got eaten alive.

Anywhere up there is great. I sure we would be up to it if you are planning a group trip.

Black fly season up there is usually around May/early June time frame, but depends on the weather. AmyG usually calls up there and asks.

More like AmyG goes up there and gets chewed up and then comes back and reports in. I am doing a trip somewhere up there or in the Greens/Whites the week after I come back from the Smokies. 5/16. I expect to be chewed up a bit.

okay - so then my time frame will be either late june or early july!

duly noted, Artex - will try to go during the week...

yeah - i LOVE the group trips - but its been awhile since I gone on a quiet trip or on a trip were it wasn't constant work to keep warm! - i have fantasies of sitting by a lovely lake or up high on a nice peak and just - e gads! - be quiet....read a book...do some writing....take a nap....ah, so looking forward to the summer!

Re: Black Flies
Gremlin and I did a hike there last July 4th weekend and the black flies were out in full force. My legs looked like the surface of the moon after that trip. Nasty little bugs.

AmyG has my guidebook that has a lot of trips that can get you away from the crowds. Just stay away from Old Forge, The High Peaks, and the major lakes and you will be away from the crowds....

Just be prepared for damp areas....

Gaiters are a must in most areas of the Adirondacks.

I have been wanting to do the trails around Cranberry Lake for a while now...
There are two major loops near there. Dog Pond Loop and High Falls Loop. Both need ATLEAST 2 full days, with plenty of opportunities to extend into longer trips.

Insects...

When it comes to black flies and mosquitoes they can be there from whenever it gets warm enough (usually April) to the point in which it gets too warm (usually July). In some areas they can linger longer....

Quote from the web...
CRANBERRY LAKE REGION
The Five Ponds Wilderness Area, southwest of Cranberry Lake is one of the most remote and least used areas of New York State. Penetration of this area in winter is a true test of wilderness skills. It is suitable only for people who carry and know how to use field repair materials and survival equipment. There are about 40 miles of trails in this area.

Cranberry Lake Area Info

The only drawback to the Cranberry Lake and Five Ponds Wilderness Area is the amount of trees that you may have to circumnavigate due to the Microburst of 1995.

Daks
Pharough Lake is a longtime favorite of mine. Lots of camping on the lake. Lots of hiking. Bring canoe wheels as there is a dirt road to the lake. Good snowshoeing area too. The locals carry in their rowboats & hide them in the woods all summer. Good Fishing. I'm also fond of Lake Lila & Lows Lake. (VERY buggy) Had a really nice trip off the bog river flow, Lows Lake & the Oswegatchie. The Adirondacks is incredible for a canoe which is even better in hot weather. Very few snakes there outside the Hudson/Champlain valleys.
