More arguments on other boards.
Since I'm moving right near the ocean, I'm giving serious thought to getting a kayak for the ocean when I move down to Tampa (I'm still going to backpack, fret not).

So, I post a thread on paddling.net asking about kayaks and a virtual fist fight broke out. It's funny because the argument was over skegs and rudders, something I didn't even inquire about.

Check it out!

Nice one , Artex!

LOL you should have seen the upset that I started when I asked about what kind of inflatable kayak to get.
hey im not rich but I found them to be SNOBS!!!
so i went out and got what I wanted and did a solo kayaking trip all without taking any classes!
I did it and lived and had a blast.
I am going to take classes, I found a place here in the city (yes in the Hudson) that offers Free classes.

so there ~

Those people are freakin' nuts, Arty!
I don't know aquat about what they are saying, but I do know a lot about people. I only have one piece of advice. Whichever boat you decide on, do not go out with any of those folks!

Cool, mapleleaf! Lot's of good sea kayaking around NYC, I've been reading. Sure, the water ain't clean, but paddling around Manhattan island would be primo. Gotta watch the tides though.

Also be cool to paddle up the Hudson river.

LOL @ treebeard! I'm already recruiting my best friend (who lives in Tampa) to get into kayaking. Just like backpacking, I'm sure I'll eventually meet up with some hardcore folks should I take it that far. :-)

Ocean? What ocean?
Welcome to the area. Tampa is very close to the Gulf of Mexico, and even closer to Tampa Bay, but you'll have at least a three hour drive to get to the ocean.

hey artex...go to www.madpaddlers.com (if anything to listen to a cool jimmy buffet song :) ) they have two stores in the tampa bay area.

i bought my kayak from them 2 years ago..and they can tell you all about ocean/gulf kayaking. I asked the guy if i could take the kayak i was buying out to the ocean/gulf and he said.....u bet....he had one and he "surfs" in it at sebastian inlet....heh...i only have a skeg,,..... but if i had the extra 300 bucks to spend, i would go for the rudder just for the versatility.
I paddled out to Cumberland Island twice with just a skeg in choppy water with some wind and against the tide once...and it did fine......my arms fell off, but the kayak did real well. definitely get a spray skirt!
