Hiker used cell phone....
Saw on the news this morning where I hiker had been lost in the Shining Rock wilderness...he called for help on his cell phone and they talked to him till his battery ran out. I want to know who is cell phone company is!!! I never have service when I'm out..I use my phone more for a watch and pray that if I ever have an emergency that God will miraculously give me service! Scary huh?

I hated verizon.

I have T Mobile now, used to be voice stream. I had awesome service while in the W. Va mountains, but can't get it for anything up north. I do get better service with it than I did with Verizon though. Could it also depend on the phone?

crazygurl, no, I haven't been out solo in three years.

I can't seem to shake the kids and/or their friends.

Oooo, we could always get out "there" and split up.....you take the high road and I'll take the low road.....and hopefully none of us will get lost!

Verizon has largest coverage by far than any other company out there. When I had service with them it was great.

#2 largest coverage is AT&T/Suncomm
they have the 2nd largest coverage.

Sprint is just crap, the stupid thing cost me a job last summer when I really needed one :-( It's hardly worth carrying at all, let alone on the trail.

Someone found a hiker, here in Vancouver's North Shore Mtns, still lying in his sleeping bag. His.??.. Her.?? They're not quite sure, since they figure it's been there since June '01. I was kind of surprised they found it at all.

BTW.... I stick with Verizon, which is 'Telus' here. My bro-in-law is a national manager for engineering. His people are doing the fiber optic work for Canada. It's interesting stuff.

When retrieving one of the more recent suicides in the canyon, who was seen going over the edge, the S & R guys found another one in the same spot. No one saw that one go over.

I have AT&T, and I can get service from some places in WV and Va, but I generally have to be on a ridge to do it with clear line-of-sight to a nearby town where there are cell towers.

Sorry..I didn't mean to be a smart ass...from what I understand he was hiking alone and was not familiar with the area. He realized he was lost and called for help. I will look and see if I can find the story.
