R.I.P. Mr.RogersView Messages“its true its a sad day for people of ALL ages fred mr.rogers passed away into the eternal land of makebelieve” 6:10:11 AM 2/27/03 “One of my favorite neighbors, he will be missed.” 6:29:25 AM 2/27/03 “who is getting his sweater?” 6:31:40 AM 2/27/03 “Can you say 'dead as a doornail', boys and girls???” 6:31:55 AM 2/27/03 “LOL FG!!!” 6:33:22 AM 2/27/03 “well father goose you have managed to make me smile before i went to sleep and then you made me smile this morning, (get your minds out of the gutter, i mean this IS the Mr. Rogers thread for heavens sak) you very funny. thank you!” 6:34:56 AM 2/27/03 Happy trails Mr Rogers.... “And so we bid a fond adeu to King Friday, Owl, and that crazy old lady too. He was a cool fella.” 6:35:36 AM 2/27/03 “Careful there, wildflower, we wouldn't want to start any UNFOUNDED RUMORS, would we??? ;-) ;-)” 6:37:17 AM 2/27/03 “I DO seem to have that effect on the ladies...” 6:38:48 AM 2/27/03 “must be a ny thing that a guy that was a positive influence on children being dead is funny” 6:40:33 AM 2/27/03 “Wow. I feel bereft. He was always there growing up.” 6:42:23 AM 2/27/03 “Hey, I'm not from NY. I always thought that dude was kinda weird, anyway, kinda like the freak that would pull up in his beat up car and ask 'Hey kid, want some candy?'” 6:47:24 AM 2/27/03 “Opie -- I am with you on this. (And must say, having never met you, that I am somewhat suprised (I don't know what I mean by that)). I didn't truly appreciate Mr Rogers until watching my 4 year old watch it. There is no better children's television. It is intelligent, caring, creative. It imparts lessons without heavy handed moralizing. It is comforting. Its educational. Field trips to pottery classes, Yo-yo Ma's, gymnastics, and hundreds and hundreds of other places . . that for a 4 year old mind must be fasinating. Learning how things work, how they are made. The world of make belive as a device for resovling problems. The routine, continuity. WHen look at the wasteland of young children's television: Spongebob, the rugrats (anything on Nickelodean, most stuff on PBS Barney for instance (which, to me, was "fake" good tv. Put on a friendly purple dinasour and have him hug people ., . .it had no real value). Mr. Rogers stood head and shoulder above any other offering. Short of turning the tv off and reading to your kids, it is the best thing out there. He stopped production of the show a couple of years ago, and our PBS station plays from the catalouge of shows. I am not sure our 4 year old will grasp that he has died yet is still on tv. Again . . .I didn't have as deep as an appreciation for him between the ages of when I was 4 myself, and when I was 33 . .. but I do now. In an understated, non-commericial, simple way he delivered a great product to young children. He deserves more respect and appreciation than I can possibly express.” 6:52:09 AM 2/27/03 “opie,go crawl back under the rock you seems to like to live under!” 6:52:26 AM 2/27/03 “Mapleleaf, report to the "Mean people suck" thread immediately! I second what lee said, and what Opie said. Mr Rogers is loved by millions. I grew up with him, as did all of my brothers. He played a positive role in my childhood. He deserves some respect.” 6:57:13 AM 2/27/03 “thats right rag on me but let FG get away with his joke?” 7:01:09 AM 2/27/03 “To Maple and FG -- Let it go. Fred Rogers represented the opposite of cyncial, sarcastic, caustic and dirty joking one upsmanship. All of which I am in favor of. But not on this thread. Have a beautiful day (in the neighborhood!!!) :-)” 7:09:24 AM 2/27/03 Mr. Robinson Ruled “OK!! todays word, boys and girls is b-i-t-c-h. Now go say this to your mommy and if slaps you, you said it correctly! I watched Fred but I have more memories of Sesame St. and the Electric Co. Bert and Ernie are classic.” 7:21:30 AM 2/27/03 “it never occurred to me that Mr. Rogers could die! wow. i used to watch him every day...that and Sesame Street. the one where they went to the crayon factory was the best!” 7:26:33 AM 2/27/03 “YES.... I am no longer on the "Mean people Suck" list. B Rabbit is!! I grew up watching Sesame St. I joined the fan club on 11/20/1970. I still have the orig. album that came with the packet. I never got into Mr. Rogers but from what I hear he was really into volunteering. which is a great way to give back. so good for him. I know that they still re-run his show. but by the time my little ones were watching tv, Barney was big (and scary in my eyes) and SS. I miss Jim Henson. I loved the Muppets.” 7:29:09 AM 2/27/03 “lyra...yea..the crayon factory, and how they make pencils, and his goldfish dying. Mr Picture..Special delievery...wow... I think i'm gonna go pull out my old crayons and draw "someone" some flowers, she seems like an unhappy person” 7:40:50 AM 2/27/03 “did you get a Happy Birthday wished to you before/after Sesame Street, Maple? i did! if i ever have kids, i hope Mr. Rogers repeats are still on then...” 7:41:00 AM 2/27/03 “~SNIFF~ NO but I got Burts autograph....” 7:43:33 AM 2/27/03 “cool! once, i went to a Sesame Street Live show, and i got one of Big Bird's feathers! it was floating through the air, and i caught it. :-)” 7:45:13 AM 2/27/03 “well well I I oh forget it......... LOL my brother-in-law was on the set of howdy doody show. now that was a strange puppet.” 7:47:58 AM 2/27/03 “Howdy Doody lives in Detroit now. (I'm serious)” 7:53:00 AM 2/27/03 “Can't we all just get along? Mr. Rogers was the origial cool kid. As CMB might say, He ROCKS!!! Kids have a hard time understanding death. One of the sadest stories I know was when a young doctor in Knoxville I knew died. He offen flew with the helicopter ambulance and he also flew a small personal helicopter for fun. He crashed his personal helicoper into a hillside and had to have a closed coffin funeral. The helicopter ambulance did a flyover at the funeral. His 5 and 3 year old kids looked up and with smiles on their faces screamed "THERE'S DADDY!". Everyone broke down after that.” 8:04:58 AM 2/27/03 “No Lie: My mom just called. She said, "I wanted to tell you before you heard it on the radio or something. Mr. Rogers died." LOL - It's not funny that he passed away. I feel like many of you do; that he was an excellent role model and great story teller. I did find it funny, tho, that my mom thought she needed to break the news to her 29 year old daugher! What a sweetheart!” 8:11:23 AM 2/27/03 “Fred Rogers = Freddy Krueger?” 8:14:22 AM 2/27/03 “"who is getting his sweater?" Mapleleaf 06:31:40 AM 02/27/03 The sweater will hang in the Smithsonian in perpetuity. I was 10 in '68 - when he began his show - so I was never much of a fan, personally. I could appreciate the value of his message, tho. Very clean and consistent, he was. We have lost yet another American icon. Please save the foolishness for foolish threads. Is nothing sacred?” 8:34:31 AM 2/27/03 “it's a sad day in the neighborhood.... i loved the trolly and the cat that said meow meow every time she talked....and the owl was cool too that weird puppet in the carasoul always skeered me though.” 8:39:59 AM 2/27/03 “OK, fine! If y'all are gonna snivel over Mr. Rogers, I wanna requiem for Sheriff John, Skipper Frank and Miss Mary Ann...” 8:43:39 AM 2/27/03 “MR MOOSE! MR MOOSE!” 8:45:47 AM 2/27/03 “I used to feel like FG about Mr. Rogers, then about a yr. ago or something, I saw an interview w/ him on NightLine. I watched the entire thing while literally sobbing. He was possibly one of the most caring individuals this planet has ever had the luck of seeing. In the interview he talked about how he remembered when the shooting of Robert Kennedy was broadcast on television. He said that after he saw that he realized fully that as adults/parents in this country it is our job to protect our children from viewing things on television that they are not capable of or prepared to process. He realized that he needed to talk about the topic on his program. He was an amazing man. If any of you are interested, PBS has a Mister Roger's Neighborhood website and a special spot where people can post messages about the show or the man himself. These messages are for the Rogers family and the cast and staff of the show.” 8:47:02 AM 2/27/03 “...and don't forget Shari Lewis!!!” 8:48:25 AM 2/27/03 “Personally, I'm all for a program where a caring and gentle man tells my child everyday, that her ideas are good and that she is special. I'm all for a man who can say frankly and again gently in an interview directed at adults, "I always tell them that I will do whatever I can to protect them, tell them I love them and that they are free to speak to me." He said this to Katie Couric about his children (and since they were grown by the time of that interview, I assume about his grandchildren as well) and what parents can say to them about mom and dad "being there."” 8:53:48 AM 2/27/03 my deepest ... “heart felt compassion goes out to his family... he made children smile..” 8:54:29 AM 2/27/03 Found this on USA Today website “"I'm always afraid when I talk like that, people will think it's sappy. That's probably one of the worst outcomes of the fast, superficial things people are fed. They think that's the way people should be. I think we're created deep and simple, and society doesn't nurture that. Society nurtures shallow and complicated."-Fred Rogers” 9:24:51 AM 2/27/03 “Newgirl -- That quote from him that you pulled from USA Today really sums it up. Thanks for finding it.” 9:35:11 AM 2/27/03 “No prob., Lee. I really, really admire him. I didn't expect to be this moved.” 9:50:21 AM 2/27/03 It's a beautiful day “at the Pearly Gates! Don't be sad, tarabull... Mr. Rogers will live on the television airwaves long after we're dead and buried!” 9:54:06 AM 2/27/03 :>( sad :>( “he was one of my favorites.....along with charles shultz” 10:08:22 AM 2/27/03 10:09:30 AM 2/27/03 “My favorite is "I'm taking care of you."” 10:16:05 AM 2/27/03 “Wow, I can't believe it. I won't repeat all the great things people said about him and his show above, other than to say "ditto." When my brother's kids were young, I remember my brother telling me that Mr. Rogers was the best kids show on TV. My brother had a tendency to be sarcastic, and I was sure he was joking around. I said, "You have got to be kidding - that guy is the biggest geek and the show is so incredibly stupid, I can't believe you would say that." But he insisted he was not joking. Then, when Cameron was about the right age to start watching the show, I realized my brother was right. True, for older kids (6? 7? older?), it would seem to be kinda dumb, but the show was absolutely the best for 3-4-5 year olds. Heck, I dug all of the great musical guests he would bring on, not to mention all of the cool manufacturing operations he would visit! I will always have many fond memories of watching that show with Cameron.” 10:28:30 AM 2/27/03 “great quotes, newgirl. i didn't really know anything about him, other than his show.” 10:31:26 AM 2/27/03 “Teletubbies Rock Psychedelic Baby Pinwheels! Mr. Rogers was too 2-dimensional!” 10:35:52 AM 2/27/03 “I always dug the model neighborhood they showed at the begining and ending of the show. Was Mr. McFeely on Mr. Rogers? "Speedy delivery! Speedy delivery!" Or was that Cptn. Kangaroo? It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood! Would you be mine? Could be mine? Won't you be my neighbor? RIP Fred.” 11:09:41 AM 2/27/03 “Yes! Mr. McFeely (sp?) was indeed a Mr. Rogers character. There was one episode where they showed actual photos of Mr. McFeely's wedding - pretty funny seeing him out of makeup and costume....” 11:15:13 AM 2/27/03 “McFeely was Fred Rogers' middle name. Mr. Moose was on Cpt. Kangaroo.” 11:16:56 AM 2/27/03
